Carl Henry Barz and his family emigrated in 1869 from the  eastern portion of the Province of Pommern, which was then a part of the Prussian Empire.  This part of Pommern later became a part of Poland.  They traveled on the Ship America, departing Bremen and arriving in New York on June 16, 1869.  The family settled in Nicollet County in south-central Minnesota, where they were farmers.  Like the Hahn and Sprengeler families, the Bartz family members had strong Lutheran roots which they retain today.  The Hahn and Bartz families came together when the Rev. Edward Hahn married Esther Bartz in 1922.  Edward and Esther were Carol's paternal grandparents.
