15. Thomas3 Hunt (41) (Thomas2, Thomas1) was born at England. He married Margaret Webster (42), daughter of John Webster (416) and Agnes Smith (417), on 5 Jun 1632 at Cossington, Leicester, England. He was buried on 3 Aug 1642.
Thomas Hunt married Margaret Webster on 5 June 1632 in Cossington, Leicestershire, England. She was a daughter of John Webster (later Gov. of CT) and his wife Agnes Smith. This generation of the Hunt family has been erroneously identified in many works. He became freeman in 1627/8. Gov. Webster's will (dated 25 June 1659) mentions his grandchildren Jonathan and Mary Hunt but does not give the names of his daughter andson-in-law, presumed deceased. (Webster, 1915): "----There is no evidence that Gov. Webster had a daughter Mary,---- evidence indicates that he had a daughter Margaret who m. Thomas Hunt and they were the parents of Jonathan and Mary Hunt who came to Hartford by 1655 to live with their grandfather Webster and moved with the Websters to Hadley MA in 1659 during a religious dispute in CT which led Websters and many other settlers to move upriver to Hadley and Northampton. The Parish Register of Cossington, Leicestershire, Eng.,has the following data: John Webster m. Agnes Smith 7 Nov 1609. (Gov. John of CT.) Margaret Webster bapt. 21 Feb 1611/12 dau. of John Webster. Margaret Webster m. Thomas Hunt 5 Jun 1632." Read more in Mitchell Hunt's HUNTS OF Vermont. Also somewhere along the line there was an assumption that JOHN HUNT was Jonathan's father. All indications are that it was THOMAS. Material available regarding the families of Hadley show John Webster's presence in Hadley was continous from the time he arrived until his death. He was buried in Hadley 5 April 1661. From "Genealogies of Hadley Families", Lucius M. Boltwood (from Sylvester Judd' 1862 and 1905 History of Hadley,MA) publ. by Gen. Publ. Co., Baltimore, 1979. "Hon. John Webster: From Hartford, one of the leaders of the Hadley Co.buried in Hadley 5 APR 1661. Wife agnes, children: 1.Matthew; 2.William; 3.Thomas; 4. Robert; 5:Anne; 6:Elizabeth; 7."Daughter, name unknown, m.Johnathan Hunt of Northampton, MA. (Mitchell J. Hunt-"This confirms that the name of the daughter associated with Johnathan Hunt was not known in those days........").
Children of Thomas3 Hunt (41) and Margaret Webster (42) were as follows:

19. Thomas3 Hunt (486) (Richard2, Thomas1). No baptismal record found. He married (--?--) _____ (495).

Children of Edwarde3 Hunt (491) and Joane Lathberrie (497) were as follows:

Generation Four

31. Jonathan4 Hunt (43) (Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born at Leicester?, England. "Jonathan Hunt, Pioneer at Northampton, MA, is said to have been b. in 1637 at Sudborrowe, Thrapstone, Northamptonshire, ENG (not verified with any documentation) and reported in numerous published historical and genealogical works (including Wyman) to be son of "John and Mary Webster Hunt" and grandson of John Webster who was governor of the Connecticut colony. The latter part of the statement is true, but some of the writers of earlier histories had the good taste to put a question mark by the names John and Mary which question mark others have ignored (Wyman expresses some reservation about John, but not of Mary). There is no evidence that Governor John Webster had a daughter Mary, and the evidence noted below indicates he had a daughter Margaret who m. Thomas Hunt, and they were the parents of Jonathan and Mary Hunt who came to Hartford, CT, by 1655 to live with their grandfather Webster and moved with the Websters to Hadley, MA, in 1659 during the religious dispute in CT which led the Websters and many other early settlers of CT to move upriver and establish new colonies at Hadley and Northampton." (Hunt Families of Vermont by Mitchell J. Hunt; Oct 1990.) (The Early Hunt Families of Sharon, Connecticut and Surrounding Areas of Litchfield County; (502 Church St., Willow Grove, PA 19090: Mitchell J. Hunt, July 1985), Found in various genealogical libraries, p 112. Hereinafter cited as Hunt Families of CT.). He was baptized on 4 Jun 1637 at St.Nicholas Church, Leicester, Leicester, England. He married Clemence Hosmer (44), daughter of Thomas Hosmer (287), on 3 Sep 1662 at Hatfield, Massachusetts. He died on 29 Sep 1691 at Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. He was buried after 29 Sep 1691 at Old Burying Ground, Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, His headstone is an example of the winged death's head motif. There is the ominous skull, two round empty eyes, and a triangular skull like nose. The mouth is a simple line, but below the line on the jaw are the teeth of a skull. This is unconventional because of the two mouths that the skull has. The wings are detailed and come out of the skull like cherub wings. Above the skull are decorative lines, and on the sides of the stone are foliate motifs.

Jonathan came to Hartford, Connecticut in 1658. Moved to Northampton Massachusetts abt 1660. His widow married John Smith of Milford CT. He was a cooper, a freeman of the colony in 1662. Deacon 1680-91. Representative to General Court 1690. Wyman's shows his move as 1660. Jonathan's gravestone shows he was 54 at death. Jonathan was buried in the old burying ground of Northampton ( Bridgman).

From Mitchell J. Hunt's The Early Hunt Families of Vermont: Hunts came early to Norwich where the 1791 US Census shows Simeon Hunt head of a family of one male l6 or over, five males under 16, and three females. In the adjoining town of Strafford was Solomon Hunt with one male 16 or over, three males under 16, and five females. In the 1800 census both families are reported in Norwich. Vermont vital records for both families show some of them in both Norwich and Strafford. These two families provide all (or nearly all) of the many Hunts found in Norwich in the first half of the 19th century.

The identity of Simeon Hunt has been clearly established, son of Simeon-3 Hunt (1713-1795) of Coventry, Ct. (Ebeneezer-2 Hunt of Lebanon, CT, Jonathan-1 Hunt of Northampton, MA). Solomon Hunt appears to have been closely related to Simeon and probably a cousin, but his parents have not been discovered. Details on Simeon Hunt and his family are provided below. The family of Solomon Hunt is provided in the section on Strafford, albeit records on his family are found at both Strafford and Norwich.

Thomas Wyman's 1862-3 Genealogy of the Name and Family of Hunt has much on Simeon Hunt "of Coventry, Ct." (also pioneer at Norwich, VT) and his ancestors and descendants. Also data on the family of Solomon Hunt, contemporary neighbor and probable cousin, albeit his ancestors have not been discovered. The data from Wyman are shown below supplemented by notes from census records, Vermont Vital Records (VVR), and gravestones in Norwich cemeteries.

Simeon Hunt "of Coventry, Ct." (and moved to Norwich, VT, where he died) b. July 8, 1751, son of Simeon Hunt of Coventry, Ct., and brother of Eliphaz (the father of Eliphaz of Hartford, VT,) m.______(prob. the Anna Hunt, widow, who died at Hartford May 23, 1810), had eight children, some, at least, born at Tolland, Ct. Simeon died at Norwich, VT, April 28 or May 29, 1810 (two cards in Vermont Vital Records with different dates, probably April 28 in that his presumed wife Anna died in May as a widow).

DEATH OF DR. HUNT - Our venerable and respected fellow citizen, Dr. Simon HUNT, died of dropsy at half-past eight o'clock this morning, at his residence on West Avenue. He had been ill for some months past and his death was not altogether unexpected.

Dr. HUNT was the senior physician of this county, having practiced medicine in this immediate vicinity for fifty-three years, since his removal hither from Connecticut in 1811. He was among the earliest settlers of the county, and at the time of his arrival here Rochester consisted of but two log houses, on the west side of the river. The old companions who have seen such things are dropping away one after another, and there will soon be few remaining who have ever looked upon the Gene. [Genesee River] see unshadowed with flour mills, and unarched with bridges.

It appears Hunt's parole was thenrevoked along with those of five other officers , including Case.Thereupon, Hunt resoned that parole stopped at the water's edge in anyevent, so he persuaded the affected officers to escape. They did so,but were later betrayed by a guide and returned to custody inMontreal. They were tried as parole violaters (probably at the risk ofexecution) but were acquitted. They were then sent by ship to Halifax,Nova Scotia and imprisoned at Melville Prison..//Due to unsanitaryconditions, overcrowding, and alternate severe inside heat andexposure to outside frigid weather, many of the prisoners contracted alung ailment and died. Hunt became ill of the same ailment and wasparoled after about two months in prison. However, he appears never tohave regained his former vigorous health and was declared a permanentand total invalid in 1830, being awarded a $20 per month pension fromthe U. S. Army.// There are pay records on file in the U.S. Archivesmilitary records of the War of 1812, Captain Jedediah Hunt, Swift'sand Dobbins Regiment (1814), New York Volunteers, card numbers37708608-6539. They show service beginning May 1, 1814, taken prisonerat Bridgewater July 25, 1815, arrival in Albany, April 1, 1815,granted leave to return to Tioga County, paid in full November 8,1816. During his service, he was under the command of Colonel Hugh W.Dobbin. Also mentioned are Company's commanded by Captain WalterWarden and by Captain Peter B. Porter according to an affidavit filedin the pension file. Gen. Porter recorded high praise for Captain Huntin his affidavit. //Pension payments were made through authorizedpension agents in each state and territory. At various times, Huntreceived payments through a pension agent in Detroit (originallyTerritory of Michigan and later the State of Michigan), an agent inAlbany, New York, and an agent in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From thecorrespondence in file, it is possible to determine the approximatetimes and various residences of Jedediah Hunt.//An affidavit filed byDr. Godfrey Waldo of Owego, New York, (Tioga County) on August 25,1830 states that Waldo first knew Hunt in 1810 in Owego and was hisphysician until 1814 when Hunt entered service. He treated Hunt from1815 until 1821 when he says Hunt went to Michigan. An afffidavitfiled by Noah Murray, Esquire of Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvaniaon August 5, (1830?) states that he knew Hunt from 1796 to 1807, thathe visited Hunt in Tioga County, New York in 1815, when Hunt returnedthere 'to his Father's' (house). He then saw him 'casually' until 1822when he spent the summer with Hunt in Oakland County, Territory ofMichigan. Murray 'worked on mills Hunt was building.' However, he saysHunt was unable to do hard physical work for extended periods of timeand apparently was able only to supervise the actual work. Anaffidavit dated August 30, 1831 states that Hunt returned to New York in June 1830, returned to Michigan in August 1830, leaving his familyin New York. (Several documents indicate that in September 1830, Huntresided in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, having moved from Oakland County , Michigan). In October 1830, he returned to New York where hefound his family ill, so he stayed over the winter. It appears thatHunt had intended to take up residence in Auburn, New York at thistime. It appears that he did so temporarily but then, 'things did notwork out ( in Auburn, Cayuga County) so he apparently moved his familyback to Detroit in thespring of 1831. //In a letter dated January 5,1839, written from Owego, Tioga County, New York, Hunt states that he'left Detroit in February last'(February 1838 ?), as his little girls are here and have been since my wife's death' and that 'my relativesall live here.' In an affidavit filed January 24, 1839 through the Court of Common Pleas for Tioga County, New York, Hunt states that: 1) He was burnt out in Detroit two years ago 2) He lost his wife inDetroit three years 'hence' 3) He has 2 daughters, 1 brother, and 1sister living in Tioga County, plus other relatives nearby. An affidavit dated May 1, 1837 in Wayne County, Michigan states that on April 27, 1837, Hunt lost all his papers in the 'great fire in the City of Detroit'. The affidavit asks for duplicate pension papers and states that Hunt is poverty stricken and in great need ofassistance. A letter to Hunt from the Michigan pension agent, dated December 24, 1838, is addressed to Candor, Tioga County, New York. However, a followup letter written by Hunt is headed Owego, Tioga County, New York, March 1, 1839. An affidavit filed July 21, 1857 through the Court of Common Pleas, Bradford County, Pennsylvania states that Jedediah Hunt removed from New York to Pennsylvania'because it was for his pecuniary benefit'. In a letter dated July1857 from Canton, Bradford County, Pa., Hunt requested that payment ofhis pension be transfered from Albany, N. Y. to Philadelphia, Pa. ' as my son is in Philadelphia.' Notwithstanding, it appears that Hunt lived in Bradford County, Pa.before 1857. A letter dated August 6,1843 requests copies of pension records reflecting his favorablemilitary record. It is from Canton Corners, Bradford county, Pa. Hesays he 'has been petitioned to run for the Assembly' and needs all the help he can get.//Both the 1850 and 1860 U. S. Census records showJedediah Hunt residing in LeRoy, LeRoy Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. An affidavit dated February 13, 1865 by James H.Oliver, Examining Surgeon from the pension office, Philadelphia, Pa.,states that he 'visited the late residence of Jedediah Hunt, 4 mileseast of Canton, Bradford County, Pa.' He 'talked with Mrs. Hunt and learned that Jedediah Hunt died October, 1864 of kidney disease(possibly diabetes) in his 82nd year of his age.'

Became Missionary in the same year to the Sandwich islands and then Hawaii, then FIRST, and only Protestant Pastor in State of California. (First Superintendent of Presbyterian and Congregational missions - builds first Congregational Church of San Fran.)

Now, follow one of his 12 - and one of the few to survive, James Richard Hunt, born Sandwich Islands, 1847.

Who in turn has a son, William Brewster Hunt, born 1869, Ottawa, Ill, Grad of Princeton Seminary 1897, and same year becomes Missionary to Korea. (Note the hotlink below, and there is a beautiful picture of William's family - gorgeous wife, children, etc, of his Son - Bruce Finley Hunt - a second cousin to our Grandfather???)

Now, he had a sister Mary Caroline Hunt, born 1871, missionary to China 1895. Note, that Bruce Hunt relates how she suffered a nervous breakdown in China and may have suffered terribly with the Boxer Rebellion around 1900. (Note, the great China missionary James Hudson Taylor of England died 1905 after 40 years of hard work winning over 100,000 souls to Christ)

(Second note: Boxer Rebellion: The United States, eager to rescue its ministers and to assert its presence in China, sent a contingent of 2,500 sailors and marines. [Think Hollywood movie with Steve McQueen] After rescuing another besieged delegation in Tientsin, the international force marched to Beijing, fighting Boxers and imperial soldiers along the way. [Yeah: Think Empress Dowager Tsu Hsi mother of the Last Emperor]

(see Fannin Co. Bar Assn Resolution June 1934-copy in hands of Holly Harris and S. B. Hunt-1991)THE FOLLOWING IS FROM AN OBIT OF JUDGE HORACE W. HUNT published (prob.) in a Bonham Texas newspaper about the time of his death. "The Hunt line of ancestry runs back to the sixteenth century, and springs directly from what is known as the Northampton line that is inclusive of some of l he most exceptional personages. At about the age of ten years Horace W. Hunt took to the woods on his little pony as a cowboy. He often came into contact with Indians, as there were some who lived in Fannin County. During the Civil War, although he was only a boy, he wanted to do his share toward winning the war. In 1863 he joined a home guard company at Bonham under the command of General Henry E. McCoullough. He was put on an express line running from Bonham. In 1872 he was married to Miss Francis Elender Irick. They first made their home near what is now Duplex, Fannin County. In 1873 they moved on the ranch of his uncle, William Hudson Hunt, known as Cactus Hill, in Wise County. After moving from Wise county to Throckmorton he was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace. This was the occasion for the beginning of his study of law. He became a licensed lawyer in 1877. For the past twenty-one years Mr. Hunt had made his home at Lemasco, Fannin County retiring from the practice of law except for an occasional case. He thus devoted his time to the care of his farms and social and religious activities. - from a newspaper. There is a 56 page book entitled "Landlord and Tenant Laws' by H. W. Hunt- 919-entered Lib. of Congress. He wrote another on Oil and Gas Leases in Texas. Most of this information from Holly W. Harris of Dallas who was in Bonham at the time of his death.
