Harry's Corner

Welcome to Harry's Corner

Hi:

The virtual Harry Hoppes here. Denise has kindly asked me to host "Harry's Corner" on the Hoppesgenerations web page, and I'm honored and excited about doing so. It should be a lot of fun for all of us. Being the good sport she is, Denise is even allowing me to establish ground rules for my participation. Basically, I thought we should start with the following and see how it works before allowing chaos to reign:

1. Any question, however trivial or potentially embarrassing, is OK to submit although I'll limit my direct response to those pertaining to 1899 or before, with priority given to those up to 1875.

2. Questions or comments should pertain to Hoppes families including spouses but not the ancestors of spouses, because my interest is more toward family history than genealogy.

3. If I don't know the answer to a question, I'll say so up front. Although I may provide suggestions about how to find an answer, usually I won't attempt to do so myself. Although my Hoppes database is substantial, it now is 20 - 30 years old and my deteriorating ankles won't allow too much first-hand research (I replaced both of my knees with bionic ones 5 - 6 years ago). Moreover, as Denise knows, I refuse all cookies when I visit an Internet site, which makes Internet research rather unpleasant for me because it's frustrating to decline a half dozen of more cookies and then not be allowed entry to a site. That's not the way the Internet used to be!

I've listed my recent Internet publications below, as well as ones I hope to prepare -- some jointly with Denise. I'm here to try to help answer all those Hoppes questions you've been dying to ask or have been wrestling with for years, so please fire away.
