OTHER HOPPES IMMIGRANTS
In 1751, two brothers departed from the farm named the Linnebach south of Schoenau/Odenwald for the New Land. The arrival of Georg Happes in Philadelphia, PA on October 4, 1751 aboard the Queen of Denmark is well documented (See The Record Bin, Immigration on the Hoppes Generations website). When and where his brother Michael Happes landed in 1751 remains unknown. While we still were living in the Heidelberg, Germany area, I tried to learn more about the ship and route Michael Happes and his family followed. Letters to the National Archives and the Library of Congress in 1971 produced negative results. As a result of a letter I wrote to the Heimatstelle Pfalz in November 1971, I contacted a genealogist in Holland, who referred me to the City Archives in Amsterdam, again with negative results. After writing to the National Maritime Museum in London, England at the end of February 1972 and being informed that “Unfortunately, very few records for merchant ships have survived from this period”, I decided to wait until I returned to the US to pursue Michael’s arrival.
Another Happes immigrant I attempted to research without success while we still lived in Germany was Maria Happes of Menzingen. According to the book New Homes In a New Land: German Immigration to Texas 1847-1861 by Ethyl Handler Geue copyrighted in 1970, as well as some supplementary information I found, Maria Happes and her family of three arrived in Galveston, TX on May 31, 1852 aboard the bark Solon, which had sailed from Bremen commanded by Captain Balleer. What happened to her and her family remains a mystery to me.
Upon returning to the US, I checked the ship list microfilm files at the National Archives for Hoppes, etc arrivals. The earliest ship lists for Philadelphia were dated 1800. The results of my search are summarized below:

Later I found other ship-list entries for individuals having a name that resembled the variants of our family surname. But I also learned that connecting ship-list names with actual Hoppes, etc. families was very difficult so I concentrated on collecting other kinds of documentation, especially census data. The Census of 1900, for example, contains quite few entries for families having similar surnames to ours, most of which are shown below:
