HAPPES FAMILY TAX LISTS
The earliest tax reference to the Happes family in Pennsylvania that I have is for Michael Hobes dated June 11, 1760. At this time, he and his family were living in the District between Oley and Colebrookdale Townships of Berks County, PA. In 1759, he does not appear on the tax roles of Oley, Colebrookdale, or the District between them. On October 23, 1761, he again was taxed in the District between Oley and Colebrookdale Townships. About 1767 or 1768, he crossed the Blue Mountain into Towamensing Township of Northampton County, whose 1761, 1762, and 1767 taxable population are also shown below.

Peter Strowel was the 1768 tax collector
for Towamensing Township. On June 22, 1768, the portion of Towamensing Township west of the
Lehigh River was organized as Penn Township. (In 1808, this area was divided into East
Penn and West Penn Townships.) On November 21, 1768, Penn Township had its first property
tax with William Gebel serving as the tax collector.
Michael Habes was listed as having six acres of cleared land and 44 of
woodland, on which he paid a tax of 12 shillings. He
also was listed as having one horse, but no sheep or cattle.
