I've divided this massive tree to focus on the descendants of Josiah MILLIDGE of Portsea, the only known son of victualler John MILLIDGE and his first wife, Mary PEARCE. Josiah was apprenticed to his uncle and namesake, Josiah MILLIDGE, a printer / stationer at Maiden Lane, Covent Garden in London, but completed only two years of a seven-year apprenticeship before leaving in 1779 to begin a second apprenticeship, this time with mariner Captain George PEARSON. The second apprenticeship lasted until 1784; the following year Josiah married Elizabeth Reeves HOWELL in Westminster and appears to have supported the family as a printer, although his pleading letters to his half-brother William MILLIDGE of Gosport show that he was often in debt. Josiah's second surviving son, Edwin, had removed to Edinburgh by 1819, where he became a master goldsmith and jeweller. Directories show that, at the time of Edwin's arrival in Edinburgh, there was a Jonathan MILLIDGE, silversmith, trading on Princes Street where Edwin later established his business, but any family relationship is unknown.

Edwin possibly removed to Edinburgh with his brother Josiah William MILLIDGE, whose daughter Harriet was born there around 1820, and who was a jeweller and later a stained glass manufacturer. The stained glass manufacturing business, JOSIAH MILLIDGE & Co., whose ownership I've not yet traced but could have belonged to the father Josiah rather than the son Josiah William, went bankrupt in October 1826, but started up again in 1827 as MILLIDGE & HUNT. On 30 June 1829 a public notice was issued to say that Josiah MILLIDGE (father or son?) had ceased to be a partner in the business, having left for America without notice, and that his stock and debts were purchased by William APPLEBEE, who would allow the business to continue as HUNT & APPLEBEE. By 1832 Josiah William MILLIDGE was apparently living in Lambeth, Surrey, and his trade was given on a baptismal register as "Ship's Steward".

Josiah MILLIDGE, father of Josiah William and Edwin, died probably in the spring of 1843, apparently intestate. His grave at Warriston Cemetery in Edinburgh does not give any date of death, nor whether it occurred in Edinburgh, England or America. Edwin appeared to have been trying to trace his father's next-of-kin when he wrote to his sole living uncle, William MILLIDGE of Gosport, on 28 June 1843, and William and Edwin, in a series of letters, pieced together what they knew of the family history.
