This is a new line of research for me, started after I found John Charles CLARY and Eliza GOLDS on the 1861 census, enumerated as husband and wife, although they did not wed until 1862.  I know nothing about them, but they had just one surviving child and seemed to have lived apart in later years.  As with most family trees, there's plenty of room for speculation, but as their one surviving child became my great-great-grandmother and no one in the family seems to know anything about her parents and their relationship, it may have to remain one of those mysteries.  Perhaps it's perfectly innocent: part of developing as a family historian is coming to terms with accepting our ancestors for what they were, and learning that while some of the more outrageous and oft-quoted family stories may have a kernel of truth, more often they are fiction (or wishful thinking -- how many people have a family member everyone claims was an illegitimate child of a member of the Royal Family?).
