[Preface]

The Vicksburg Directory is now before the Public. It is the first that has ever been published here. It has always been acknowedged that the compiling of a Directory is a somewhat arduous and unthankful task, and from my experience in the present undertaking, I cannot refute the assertion. When I commenced the work I met with discouragement enough. Many people could "... not see the use of a Directory in a city like this." "The book will not pay us." "The town is too small." "The book will do us no good," &c., &c. But I clearly foresaw the value of the work I had in hand, and I was determined to go ahead. The book is now completed, and I leave it with the people to say what are its merits or demerits. I can only hope that it will meet with their approbation. I am sure that I used my best endeavors to make it generally useful as much so as time and money would allow of. The errors or omissions which may have occurred in the book, have been caused by inadvertence or misinformation, to which all are liable who engage in such a work. I was compelled, for the want of time and the necessary information, to leave out many facts and matters which I designed publishing. To those enterprising citizens who have aided me so liberally with their advertising patronage, I am greatly indebted; and I hope that they will meet with the reward that an appreciative public know as well how to bestow. Should the work meet with sufficient encouragement, it is my intention to continue its publication yearly, on an enlarged basis. It will be my aim to make a work of general interest to every person, not only in the State but in the whole Southern country.
