At the home of the bride in Abbottstown at 5:45 o’clock Monday evening, Miss
Mary Gitt Hollinger, daughter of Mrs. Martha Hollinger was married to Herbert
Hayes, of Bristol, Va. Rev. Walter Garrett, pastor of the Reformed church
officiated, using the ring ceremony.

The bride wore an ivory satin gown with tulle veil, gathered with lilies of the
valley and, carried a shower bouquet of bride’s roses and lilies of the valley.
Her attendants were Miss Frances Hollinger, a sister, and Miss Helen Snyder, of
New Oxford. They work pink mescaline, and each carried a bouquet of Killarney
roses. The groom was unattended. As the bridal party entered the parlor the
wedding march from Lohengrin was played by Mrs. George W. Baker on the piano,
and Miss Anna Gitt Baker on the violin, and following the ceremony “Love’s Old
Sweet Song.”

Immediately after the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Hayes left by automobile for a
wedding trip to Philadelphia, New York and Atlantic City. They will make their
home in Bristol, Va., where Mr. Hayes is engaged in business.

Information from the "Brethren Heritage Along the Big Conewago", East
Berlin,
Adams County:
George Baker (1749-1805) was the son of George Baker, who was one of the
original residents of East Berlin. The elder George willed his 285 acres
to his three sons, John, George and Daniel on 8/3/1770. George Baker owned
309 acres of land in Berwick Township and had named it "Baker's Garden".
This land was acquired on 5/31/1766. His son George married Elizabeth Streng
and had the following family:
Catharina (1774), Johannes (1776), Magdelena (Molly) 1/23/1778-1/26/1864),
George (8/20/1781-11/17/1823) was married to Barbara Hollinger
(9/2/1787-2/13/1873)and
a resident of Hamilton Township in 1810, Jacob (1783), David (1784), Solomon
(1791-1873), Daniel (1794-1865).

The George Baker farmland adjoined acreages owned by Henry Jacobs, Samuel
Mummert and Adam Dick.

David, Jacob, John and Catherina Balser are buried at Mummert's in East Berlin.

Christopher who died in 1814 was born 10/20/1753 Donegal Twp, Lancaster. His wife Catherine was born 1757 in Donegal and died 5/31/1823. Her parents were Baltzer Lauver(Lauber) and Elizabeth Barmann.

I note that Daniel and David Hollinger
on pages 2 and 3 may be the same person.  The writing was very difficult to
make out on some of the papers, due to deterioration, tears, etc., and I
recall having trouble deciding over David and Daniel a few times.

In checking further, I located this information:

Sophia Elizabeth Starry married Daniel Hullinger at the Holy Trinity
Lutheran
Church, York Springs, Adams Co., PA on January 31, 1856.

On October 18, 1856, Sarah Jane Hollinger is born, but father is listed as
David, mother is Sophia.

Daniel/David dies in October, 1857

Amos Starry, apptd guardian, Oct 23, 1857.

August 13, 1858, Sophia renounces claim and appoints her father, John
Starry,exec.

It appears that it was a spelling mistake somewhere.  I will be checking
further.  Do you have info re this one or any others that I have sent?

No husband is mentioned, but I believe that it is/was Philip. He was the
son of John Valentin  Hollinger and Mary Margaretha Heiges.   John Valentine
was the son of Valentin Hollinger and Anna Maria Meyer, etc.

Does anyone have similar information?  Or can anyone possibly help with

information that I have.

Quite some time ago I posted a query about the Hollingers of York and Adams
Counties, PA  in several places but never received any responses so hoping
this might now reach more people and find someone who can come up with an
answer for me:

The Administrator of the will of [my] David HOFFMAN of Lattimore Twp.,
Adams,
PA. 1845, was Samuel HOLLINGER;  in 1851 Samuel was deceased and a Jacob S.
HOLLINGER then took over the administration.   I am hoping someone can tell
me who these Hollingers are as I have spent years trying to find the parents
or brothers or anyone who is related to my Catherine HOLLINGER who was the
wife of David HOFFMAN; Catherine was born abt 1758 and died 1850 in York
County.

The Samuel Hollinger is most likely Samuel Hollinger, b. abt 1773 in
Lancaster County, PA.  He settled in the Adams/York County area.  He had a
son Jacob Schultz Hollinger, b. 16 Sep 1820.  Also a son Samuel, Jr. b. 2
Apr 1826.

We cannot place your Catherine...though we do have much on the Hollinger

Well that's an odd one - I have no idea of who Agnes Hoffman is as a wife to (a) Christoph Hoffman - as far as we can tell, his wife Anna Elisabeth outlived him; so I have to assume this is another one of same name - I know I did find at least one of same name when I was trying to do my research for my own Christopher/Christoph/Stoffel Hoffman. Fortunately mine was usually referred to as Stoffel/Stophel.

David's will was dated 15 Nov 1843; probated 03 Feb 1844. Samuel Hollinger was of Lattimore Twp. Adams county and David was of Franklin Twp., York County. While working my way through these papers just now to double check my info, I saw that at the time I received the packet I had made a list of names connected to Hoffmans that had purchased at the vendue sale of David Hoffman, and in addition to Samuel Hollinger, there was a John Hollinger.

Tombstone in the Cemetery

A number of years ago my sister Norma and I persisted in searching through
the original Evergreen Cemetery records in Gettysburg for evidence of the
burials of our ancestors.  One of them was Samuel Hollinger, born 1817, died
1860, buried in Evergreen.

We knew that we were privileged to have the opportunity of turning page
after page of the original records at that time but the cemetery caretaker
was right there with us and looking over our shoulders.  And then we found
Samuel!!  The caretaker noted the plot number and took us straight to his
grave!

Oh what a thrill!  But then it dawned on us that Samuel had died in 1860,
his tombstone was in Evergreen Cemetery and if you think about the Battle of
Gettysburg and the Battle of Cemetery Ridge, you're talking about the
Evergreen Cemetery!  Oh my goodness, our ancestor's grave and tombstone was
right in the middle of the battle!

Subject:  The fine art of family research

 

 

Dear Folks,

 

I know that most of you folks have been researching your family history for

some time.  And from experience I know that back before the computer age it

was a real tough job that almost demanded that you had to go to the area

where your ancestors lived.  That way you could look through original church

records, court records, cemetery records, microfilms, etc.  And frankly, I

still recommend that you do that otherwise you won't get the straight scoop

(meaning primary records or secondary records).

 

But there's more to research than plowing through records and tramping

through cemeteries.  What you really need to do is to ask questions.  Ask

town clerks or town historians or historical society volunteers if they can

help you with your particular families and when you find that the answers

aren't forthcoming ask them it if they know of anyone in the township who

might have some knowledge of your family.  Frankly, out of a clear blue sky

one day I had asked a butcher in Adams Co. whether he knew of anyone who

might have some information about a particular cemetery in the area

regarding a special ancestor who was probably buried there.  Yes he did.

She was an elderly woman who kept the cemetery records.  My sister and I

knocked on her door and told her what we were looking for and we were

invited into her house while she dug up the cemetery records.  Although she

couldn't come up with his burial record, at least we knew that we were

dealing with at least a secondary source and we made note of it.

 

On another foray into Adams Co. my sister Norma and I found ourselves on

another merry go round searching for records about a particular ancestor.

We had put together what we knew of our ancestor Thomas DeWees and it

pointed us in the direction of a Church of the Brethren near Gettysburg.  We

found a church by that name, entered it and eventually found someone we

could talk to about the church records.  He told us that Anna [____] had the

old church records and he gave us her address.  We knocked on her door and

told her we were interested in what the old church records might tell us

about Thomas back in the mid 1850s.  She was readily available and took us

to the church and dug out the old records.  She allowed us to leaf through

the old books and when we found a reference to him we questioned her about

what was going on at the time.  She encouraged us to read further in the

records and we eventually reallized  that we were reading the church minutes

of what was going on during the Battle of Gettysburg and how it had affected

the local church members.  Note:  what we found in those records added more

information regarding Thomas.

 

There was another occasion in Adams County when we were looking for another

ancestor.  It was a bone-chilling drizzly Memorial Day and Norma and I were

tramping through a cemetery looking for some evidence of him.  We noticed

that there were two elderly ladies also in the cemetery who appeared to be

there only to lay flowers on a family member's grave.  We approached them

and asked them if they had ever heard of the Hollinger family who had lived

in the vicinity back in the mid 1800s.  No they hadn't, however one of them

had the old church records at her house and she invited us over to look

through them.  When Norma and I entered her house we were surrounded by the

wonderful smell of pork and sauerkraut cooking on the stove.  She pulled out

the church records, didn't find any trace of Rachael Hollinger and again

that was that.  However, once again we had the opportunity to look through

secondary records and we made note of it.

 

Now here's the moral to this story.  You can search all over the Internet

for information about your ancestors but unless you take the long trip to

where they actually lived and died, you won't get the whole story.  And once

you get there and find that the local court clerks or the township

historians can't help you, just ask around the neighborhood.  Be bold and

who knows but who the local folks might point you to such as some little old

lady who has the obscure records you're dying to look at.

The Lobach Cemetery on Bushey School Road in Latimore Township has a new, enlarged website, www.LobachCemetery.org. Please take a look to see if you are descended from anyone listed there. There are over a dozen families represented, including Lobach, Jacobs, Burkholter, Deardorff, Stitzel, Hollinger, Musselman, Bupp and Sheffer. Most burials are early-to-mid 19th century.
