"A peculiar accident which resulted in the death of aged Mrs. Margaret
Billings, occurred in Fortuna last Monday morning, says the Advance.
Mrs.
Billings, who was in her usual health, arose and after completing her
toilet
started to leave her bedroom. She grasped the door knob and in some
way
failed to retain her grip with the result that her hand slipped and
she
fell backward upon the corner of a trunk. Members of her family hastened
to her assistance and finding that she was badly injured summoned Dr.
Ward.
Upon his arrival he found that the aged lady had sustained a fracture
of
the right thigh just below the joint and also that three ribs were
broken.
She must also have received internal injuries for from that time until
her death she suffered but little, if any, pain. All efforts in her
behalf
proved unavailing and at 9:15 o'clock Thursday evening she breathed
her
last.
"Margaret Billings was a native of Glasgow, Scotland, aged 85 years and
3 months. She came to America in a sailing vessel in 1826 and for the past
fourteen years had made her home in Humboldt county. At the time of her
death she was residing with her daughter, Mrs. May Hollinger. Mrs. Billings
leaves two daughters and four sons, but one of whom, Mrs. Hollinger, was
with her at the last. She also leaves twenty-four living grandchildren
and thirty-five living great grandchildren."
