Does any of you remember Mr. Hollinger that was mentioned as going
to
Little
Rock in 1917? His son Dot worked in the Binns store in Monticello
for
years.
Mr. Will was one of the funniest men I have ever known. He could
tell a
story
and you nearly spit your sides laughing. He was a good friend to
my folks.
John Austin and Willie Jones. I remember going to his wifes funeral
at
Prairie Grove when I was a little boy. one story he told was this:
He had
bought a browning automatic shotgun. In those days no one in that
area had
electricty. One night some years after his wifes death, it was hot
and he
couldn't sleep. No one had screens in those days and you slept with
all the
windows and doors open. He was sitting out in his porch swing about
2 am
trying to get cool. A panther screamed very close to his house.
He always
said ah before beginning a sentence. He said ah I got cold real
quick and
went in the house and loaded up my browning automatic and closed
all the
windows and doors. Any of you that knew him should appreciate this
story.
Beth Thurman's mother stayed with the Hollingers when she taught
us at
Midway
and rode a horse two miles to the school. We walked two miles from
the
other
direction. Was that the good old days or what? C.L. Jones

been there in years. Nothing left except an old wash tub, a slop jar, and
a granite pan. Seemed awfully sad when I think about all the good times I
had visiting with Mr. Will when my Grandaddy and I would be off hunting
hogs, cows, or just rambling on horseback. He was truly a neat person.The Bill Andrews, Dick Thurmans, and Donald Lee families were all related
to him. In fact, he connected to the Merediths, too. His family came from
Germany to Misssissippi so I've been told.When his wife died, he left everything right where she had left it so I've
been told. In fact, her dresses hung on the wall until his death and her
shoes sat under the edge of the bed where she left them. His wife was
Eppie(Effie)depending on whom you talk to Wolfe, the daughter of Albert
Trapnel Wolfe and Anna Eliza (Dutch) Ferguson, some of my double
kinfolks...the ones who reared my great-grandfather Wolfe.C.L., are you sure mother lived with them or was it uncle Al?
When mr. Will died, he had been killing a hog. Apparently, he had a heart
attack and felt it coming on. He didn't come to town that weekend, and Dot
decided on Sunday to go check on him. when He got there, Mr. will was
sitting on the front porch in a rocker with his head reared back and a
bloody wash cloth in his hand where he had been killing the hog. The hog
was still hanging in the lot.I thought about that a lot when Grandie and I would be back there on our
horses until the house finally fell down. It is rather sad when we think
about all the neat people who have come and gone in our lives and how those
woods in the Bearhouse Twp. used to be filled with people for theri only to
be about six families left in the whole township today. I bet there are 30
square miles of nothing but deer camps left there today.BETh

through the Wolfe and Daniel connections. I'm related
through the Daniel's but she's the "expert" on Drew
County, AR residents. She provided the info to me and
I made a Wolfe lineage and a Daniel lineage. I'm sort
of an info compiler and a net researcher. She knew
these people but I didn't.

C.L., the county school superintendent, Hubert McKeown, still has
the old
community school records. They are in the courthouse in a room on
the lst
floor. I've looked at a lot of these, but there are boo coos.
I looked up
the ones with Mother teaching at ladelle and Midway.
I also found one and one only in l905 inan old journal in the vault
downstairs....It is a mess. The dust, etc, nearly killed me
, but I kept
digging. Most everything there deals with finance; however,
this one had
one year's record of finances of different school districts, and
it gave
Prairie Grove as having three schools. j As I mentioned to someone,
maybe
on the list, that I thought they had to be the Carpenter School
and the one
between Midway and the Prairie the Memaw mentioned once. She
supposedly
attended this school only one year. Joe Pat Riley was the
teacher, and he
stayed with PaPa and Momma Georgia Lagrone. Memaw, Uncle Latner,
and Uncle
Vernon rode with him to school. I don't know what the real
name of this
school was, but Memaw called it Pine Knot College. The Carpenter
SChool
has been referred to as Pecerwood Point. Pine Knot College
was somewhere
northeast of Tubbs and south of the Will Hollinger Place according
to
Memaw. After this one year, they were transferred back to
the Prairie.
I one looks at the land plat for l9l0, there is a section near the
Arthur
Lloyd deercamp that was meant for a school. Arlong LLoyd told
me once that
he knew about a school or had heard of one.
As far as records, there are some at the school, too, but I've never
delved
into them.
