I was born in Frankfort, Clinton Co., Indiana, 20 December 1940, my full name is Charles Thomas Hesler. I am a descendent of Jacob Hesler, son of William. Jacob moved his family from Kentucky to Indiana in 1834, settling in Fountain County. Several members of that family are still residents of hte county. I moved to Florida in 1973, first to West Palm Beach then to the Orlando area in 1987.

I began working on the family history, as a hobby, in 1993, continuing a work that my uncle, Elmer Loran Hesler, had started. He gave me about four sheets containing about 275 individuals and a short history, the database has grown to over 9500 individuals and includes many connecting families. Then in 1994 gave me a book Genealogy of James Balch and Descendants, written by Albert F. White, published in 1890. It covered much of my grandmothers side of the family, the Whites and Balches. I entered information from the book and got copies of the minutes of the Hesler-Frazier Reunions covering a period of 40 years. I have spent many hours doing research at the local Family History Center of the Mormon Church to verify a great many of the facts. I met Gene Balch online who has been a great help on the Balch family, you can view some of his research from the link to his web site.

Since, Hesler is not one of the more common names, I the tried, something that many said would be a waste of time, sending letters to Heslers listed in the phone books of the U. S.  The response has been very gratifying. I made contact with several cousins, some of whom were already interested in researching their roots. The letter rekindled their desire to continue their research and they have done a great deal of leg work in their areas and have shared the information with me. In essence, what has happened I have became a central collection point of the William Hesler family history I certainly wish to give them a big THANK YOU for their help. I have found genealogy to be an interesting hobby, sometimes a very time consuming hobby, but it has been very rewarding. Meeting relatives like all of you makes it worthwhile.

The Hesler family were early Fountain Co., Indiana settlers and it seems that about half of the early families are intermarried, making for some interesting situations. My grandfather, Fred Hesler, and my grandmother, Leola Elizabeth Coats, were second cousins once removed though the Frazier family. This might explain why I got involved in this never ending hobby.
