Robert L. Helman Sr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert L. Helman Sr., 94, a resident of Franklin County Nursing Home, and formerly of Rock Hill Road, Waynesboro, Pa., died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at the nursing home. Born June 9, 1903, in Guilford Township, Pa., he was the son of the late David and Caroline Sprenkle Helman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Ruth Henry Helman, in 1971. They were married Oct. 27, 1927.

He was a retired farmer and a part-time carpenter. In his early life, he worked on the Western Maryland Railroad and the former Hess Brother Orchards of Five Forks, Pa. He was a member for more than 50 years of Fetterhoff Chapel United Methodist Church near Chambersburg, where he was a trustee and on the administrative board. He had been a director of Farmer's Creamery in Greencastle, Pa.; former member of Shady Grove Ruritan Club; and former member of Pennsylvania Farmers Association.

He is survived by seven daughters, Joretta Wise, Esther Beaver and Shirley Helman, all of Waynesboro, Evelyn Oaks of Clear Spring, Melzina Dice and Alma Walter, both of Chambersburg and Pauline Seibert of Spring Run, Pa.; four sons, Robert Helman Jr., Ronald Helman and Leonard Helman, all of Chambersburg, and Elwood Helman of Waynesboro; three brothers, Glenn Helman of Hagerstown, Eugene Helman of Fayetteville, Pa., and Carroll Helman of Chambersburg; 33 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Harold Helman, in 1943; one grandson; two great-grandsons; five sisters; and five brothers.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Robert L. Basom will officiate. Burial will be in Falling Spring Reformed Mennonite Church Cemetery, Chambersburg. The family will receive friends today from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
