Tree of Heaven

Standing by itself at streetside, between the statue of Abraham Lincoln

and the Plaza, is a large Tree of Heaven (Allanthus altissima).

Although it is widely planted, the species is native to China. This tree

probably dates from the 1860's when, according to folklore, it was

planted by the Chinese cook employed by Ashland pioneer Abel

Helman, co-owner of the flour mill that stood here.
