Standing by itself at streetside, between the statue of Abraham Lincoln
and the Plaza, is a large Tree of Heaven (Allanthus altissima).
Although it is widely planted, the species is native to China. This tree
probably dates from the 1860's when, according to folklore, it was
planted by the Chinese cook employed by Ashland pioneer Abel
Helman, co-owner of the flour mill that stood here.
