First Ashland Native Passes
John K. Helman, Pioneer of Ashland, was first white child

John K. Helman, aged 76 years, the first white child born in Ashland, son of Abel and Martha Helman, died Monday afternoon, April 14, 1930.

During practically the entire three-quarter century of his life Mr. Helman has resided in Ashland and has many friends among the pioneers of the community.

The name Helman has been one prominently identified with the earliest history of the community and John K. Helman vividly recalled the early days of his childhood.

On May 9, 1886 Mr. Helman was united in marriage with Grace A. Younker, who preceded him in death by several years. Of this marriage two children were born, one dying at the age of 8 years and Mrs. L. R. Coder, resides in this city.

Five brothers and sisters also survive; Mrs. Jane Carter of Klamath Falls, Butler Helman of Ashland, Link and Grant Helman of Petaluma and Mrs. May Niles of Alturas.

Mr. Helman was a member and faithful worker in the Methodist Episcopal church.

Funeral services will be held Thursday with H.C. Stock in charge. No other arrangements have been made pending the arrival of relatives.

Mrs. J. K. Helman died at her home on North Main Street this morning at 7:30 o'clock, following an illness of seven weeks. She was 58 years of age.

Mrs. Helman was born in Wood County, Ohio, but came to Oregon at an early age, and has lived in Ashland for a number of years. She is survived by her husband and one daughter, Mrs. Lawrence Coder, of Ashland.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon from the Methodist church, J. P. dodge and Sons, funeral directors. Interment will take place in the Ashland Cemetery.

Bertha, 8 year old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John K. Helman died yesterday morning after a long illness terminating in a dropsical affection which baffled the skill of the physicians to stay. The deceased was the elder of two children and the parents have the sympathy of numerous friends in their heavy affliction. The funeral took place at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Ashland Cemetery.
