Funeral of E. B. Helman

Funeral Services for Eugene B. Helman, well known Pettis county farmer and former mayor of Green Ridge, who died at the Bothwell Hospital at 3:00 o'clock Thursday afternoon, will be held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the First Episcopal church. The Reverand T. Ross Hicks, pastor, assisted by the Reverand Ralph Emerson Hurd, pastor of the Epworth M. E. Church will officiate.

Active pall bearers will be E. E. Bagby, G. D. Rayburn, L. L. Ream, R. F. Haggard, S. G. Whiprecht, and R. J. Hausam. Honorary pall bearers will br Dr. Cord Bohling, H. R. Harris, W. W. Blain, J. E. Bagby, Q. A. Morgan, C. B. Chryst, George Bagby, R. W. Dow, Dr. W. E. Pearl and L. B. Ream.

Interment will be in the Green Ridge cemetery, the Masonic lodge in charge.

Physicians attributed his death to a weakened heart which developed following and appendicitis operation three weeks ago.

Mr. Helman became ill on Thursday, April 12, the day his wife was injured slightly in the steam table explosion at the Missouri Pacific shops. He rallied nicely after the operation until the heart malady developed.

Mr. Helman was a native of Ohio.He was born August 30, 1865 in Ashland County, the son of Jacob D. and Mary Helman. Four years later he came to Missouri with his parents. The first settled in Johnson county and in 1870 came to Pettis county.

Mr. Helman was reared on his father's farm and was educated in the public schools of Pettis county. He attended the Central Business College here.

Returning to the farm, he made farming and stock raising his chief occupations and for a time was an extensive cattle feeder. He purchased his first land about 1898 and from this purchase grew the farm known throughout Pettis county.

He was a life-long Republican. During his term as mayor of Green Ridge, many improvements were made in the town.

Mr. Helman was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and held a thirty-second degree . the Mosern Woodmen of America and the Security Benefit Association. He was an organizer of the old Camp Branch Band, and served for thirteen years as his leader.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nellie Purchase Helman, two sons, Elmer of Green Ridge and Eugene B. Jr., of the family home, a sister, Miss Elvie Helman and brother Forrest Helman. two nieces, Miss Mary Ella and Bess Helman also survive.

The body was taken to the Gillespie Funeral Home and returned to the family home this afternoon.
