Joshua Hughes was born in Chatham County, N.C., February 15, 1797, and died in Shelby County, T.N., December 28, 1878; was married to Miss Temperance Gunter in the year 1822, who preceded him to glory land only seven days, having lived together as husband and wife over fifty-five years, and raised twelve children, nine of whom survive them and are all members of M.E. Church, South. He professed religion and joined the Methodist Church about 40 years ago, in Lincoln County, T.N., and lived an acceptable member of same until called to his reward on high. He served the Church in Middle Tennessee for many years as steward and class-leader, but his work is ended on earth and he has doubtless entered the saint’s everlasting rest. Having stated for heaven he never faltered nor turned aside; his whole aim seemed to be to do all the good he could and at last get home to heaven. We do not say our father was a perfect man, for like all others he had his weaknesses, but not such as bring reproach upon the cause of Christ. He was strickly honest with all men and faithful in the performances of his promises, and the best of all when death found him ready, yea even rejoicing; and just before the dawn of day his happy spirit took to flight to the bright world on high to join with wife and children and loved ones, many from Middle Tennessee, and many from West Tennessee, in giving glory and praise to God and the Lamb forever and ever. May we all live so as to meet our kindred and friends on the shining shore.

W. J. Hughes
