Edward Harnett, Jr, a tailor, emigrated from Kent Co, England to Salem, Massachusetts Colony in 1637. His parents, Edward and Cecily (Parramore) Harnett probably followed at a later date. The Harnett family suffered for their Quaker sympathies and removed to Huntington, Long Island in 1657/58. Edward and Elizabeth (Porter) Harnett had a son Jonathan who appears in the Huntington Town records on many occasions, with the spelling Harned first being used on 10 Nov 1682. To date, research from John Schyrock Harned's "Family Tree" to present day has shown that all with the name Harned, most with the spellings Harnet, Harnit, Hornet, and Horned, along with some spelled Harnett are descended from Nathaniel and Edward, two of the three sons of Jonathan and Rebecca (Jones) Harnett/Harned of Huntington, Long Island. More detailed information on our earliest ancestors in England and North America is available on individual pages, and information on nearly 34,000 descendants and family members of Edward Harnett is available from our "Family Data" page. Family groups who have not yet been connected to the Harned Tree are located on the "Unconnected" page. Additional pages provide information on past and present family research, as well as as an area for kids. Here and there you'll encounter a touch of irony and humor...surely most of our ancestors needed a healthy sense of humor along with their reserve of grit and determination. Our hope is that this information will help you with your own family research, and give a sense of the role Harned family members have played in the history and development of our country since its earliest settlement. It is the result of many years of our own research and the help of hundreds of interested family members across the country. Please support this effort by contributing information on your own family and ancestors, and on other connected surnames. Although most of our information is quite accurate, because we have gathered information from many different family members and sources, we can not guarantee total accuracy of all data on these pages. You should confirm your own ancestry from original sources and family records. Please help us correct any errors you find on this site. The Harneds of North America and the compilation of data and information on these pages are the work of John H. Harned of Tucson, AZ and Thomas L. Harned of Overland Park, KS. No, we're not brothers...more like seventh cousins. John is a descendant of Jonathan's son Nathaniel, making him a member of the "Northeast" branch of the family. Tom is a descendant of Jonathan's son Edward, which makes him a member of the "Kentucky" branch. Tom is "The Keeper of the Data", handling most contacts involving research and family data, while John authors the pages and manages the site. There is more about us, our families, and our research of the Harned family on the "John & Tom" page. We encourage you to contact Tom Harned about family research and data, and John Harned about this web site (delete "removethis." from email address before sending). Enjoy Your Visit!!
