John Langworthy of PennsylvaniaI

Revised January, 2008

The family of John Langworthy appears several times in the early records of Radnor, Chester County, Pennsylvania, beginning in November, 1711. Their surname was often spelled Langworthy, but occasionally Longworthy. The records describe him as a yeoman of Radnor, and show that he had a large family. The following is what's been found so far:

  • He died in January, 1725/6, leaving a widow named Genis (sometimes Jenesis) who died in early 1727. I don't know when or where either of them were born, but one reference says that they were "an English family", so perhaps they were born there.

  • John seems to have had about eight or nine children, order of birth unknown:
    • John, Jr: married Margaret, daughter of Rowland Richards, Nov 8, 1711
    • Benjamin: married 1) Jane X, 2) Mary X. He died before April, 1776
    • Sarah: married Aaron Roberts, Aug 6, 1727. She died ca 1762.
    • Mary: married X Harris
    • Henry
    • William
    • Elizabeth: married X Evans
    • Margaret
Joseph Langworthy, who was a witness at the wedding of John Jr., was probably a relative, perhaps another son, of John and Genis.

I have yet to find any descendants of this family named Langworthy or Longworthy. No Langworthys (or variants) appear in the Federal Censuses of Pennsylvania through 1820.
