Missing Rockingham County, NC Marriage Bonds 1837-1868
Contributor's Note: In 1944 the N.C. Archives made a index of all
marriage bonds that had SURVIVED over the destruction of Sherman's
Armies, courthouse fires, and theft, or neglect.
Rockingham County did it's own indexing until the beginning of 1900.
The 372 bonds that I listed were bonds that had been lost prior to the
1944 index. Perhaps being lost in the Rockingham County Courthouse fire
of 1906, some pilfered by descendants, and some accidentally discarded
over the years.
Rockingham County Officials did make this early index list which has
preserved these lost Rockingham County marriages.
No witnesses or bondsmen names appear on this index list, those names
are lost forever.
