Washington County N.C.'s courthouse has burned three times - 1862, 1873 and 1881. Each time one set of records was saved - the land records. From a purely genealogical standpoint those people who saved the deed books couldn't have chosen better. NC is a State Land state so the deed records are filled with the names of people and places and only a tiny fraction of those names is found in the deed indexes. I have abstracted the 958 individual deeds found in deed books A, B and C covering 1799 (when Washington Co was formed) through 1814. There are four indexes in the book - Surnames, Females, Things & Places and Slaves. I've placed the Surname index from the book here on-line. |
