There are four cemeteries that serve Kiron Kountry. All four came into existence when the community was first established and all four are well maintained and continue to serve the needs of the local community. Two of the cemeteries are associated with the two Lutheran churches and primarily service their needs. The other two are primarily of service to the general public. All four cemeteries are situated at the highest elevation levels commanding broad views of the surrounding countryside.
The Bethel Lutheran Cemetery is located in the northeast quarter of section 31 in Wheeler Township in Sac County, Iowa. The church and parsonage that were located here burned and replacements have been relocated in the town of Kiron about two and one/half miles to the southwest. Data was obtained from several on-site visits, examination of the custodian record book and supplemented from external sources. In February 2000, access to the older record books of the church was obtained and considerable additional data was added to the database. The data currently resides in a searchable MS Access data base. Current custodian of records is Ms. Delores Wangler of Kiron.
The Hayes Cemetery is located in the east half of section 2 in Hayes township in Ida County, Iowa about a mile and one/half north of the former Arthur Baptist Church site. Data was obtained from an on-site visit and supplemented from external sources. No examination of the custodian's record book has been performed. Current records custodian is Mr. Bergman. Marilyn Dose is the source of much information concerning this cemetery and has reviewed and corrected the latest updates. The data currently resides in a searchable MS Access data base.
The Kiron Cemetery is the oldest and largest cemetery in the area with burials recorded as early as 1868. It is located in the north half of section 18 in Stockholm township in Crawford County, Iowa about a mile and one half southeast from the present location of Kiron, Iowa. The burial site was located on land that Nils Lindberg had purchased under contract from the Providence Western Land Company of Rhode Island. Mr. Lindberg was a charter member of the Swedish Baptist Church and its first chairman. He is also one of the early decedents buried here. The Lindberg land contract was purchased by Peter Olson who paid it and obtained a deed. He then made a separate parcel of two acres for the cemetery and transferred that parcel to the Kiron Cemetery Association. Later, the cemetery was expanded eastward by obtaining additional land from Nils Winquist and southward by obtaining additional land from Charles Gronau. Data was obtained from several on-site visits, extensive examination of the custodian record book and supplemented from external sources. The data currently resides in a searchable MS Access data base. Current custodian of the records is Kenneth Peterson who is secretary of the Kiron Cemetery Board. Alan Gustafson is board president. Other board members are Adelbert Sjogren, Delmar Mauritz, Larry Waldemar, Stan Swensen, Terry Skarin.
The fourth cemetery is located at the site of the original St. John's Lutheran Church in the west half of section 15 in Stockholm township in Crawford County, Iowa. The original church was replaced with a new structure in the town of Kiron in the mid-1980's. St. John's served the needs of the German speaking immigrant population and the cemetery reflects this ethnic heritage. A couple of on-site visits have been made and the church books written in German have been examined. Initial extraction has been completed and the data added to a database. Data integrity will improve over time as volunteers come forward to validate the data.
A fifth cemetery has been added to this list. The Milford Township or Deloit Cemetery is located in section 7 of Milford township a short distance north east of Deloit. It is situated on the top of a hill and has several old and well established trees on the property. It is an active cemetery, fenced, well maintained, and has expanded its acreage. Some of the first residents in Crawford county rest here among its list of decedents.
Nearly all data related to the cemetery records can be found in the Kiron Kountry database. If information such as grave location is needed, requests for searches of the MS Access Data Bases can be made to the author.
