FIRST GENERATION

(1) Samuel1 Guile, was christened 19 Jan 1613 at Ilketshall, St. Margaret, co. Suffolk, England, married on 1 Sep 1647 at Haverhill, MA Judith Davis, daughter of James Davis and Cecily Thayer, who was born about 1626 at England. Samuel died on 21 Feb 1683 at Haverhill, MA. Judith died in May 1667 at Haverhill, MA.

Burleigh #1. "Samuel Guile, brother of John Guild, was for a brief period at Dedham, and appears to have been one of the first settlers of Newbury, but did not remain long, for in 1640 he was one of the twelve who settled Pentucket, now known as Haverhill. He was made a Freeman by the General Court in 1642, and married Sept. 1, 1647, Judith Davis, daughter of James Davis, one of the original settlers, and an emigrant from Marlborough, England. By careful examination of the records we do not find that he was interested to any degree in town or church affairs. In 1650, Samuel Gild made choice of land at Little River. In 1652, Samuel Gild received ten acres in the second division. In 1658, Samuel Guile enters into an agreement for support of a blacksmith, and receives land in the third division. Samuel Gilde senior built a cottage about 1660, and in 1663 received land in the fourth division. He died Feb. 21, 1683. Part of his homestead still remains in the possession of his descendants."

(End of record quoted from Burleigh.)

Note - the reference to "Saml" in the will actually referred to son James according to the actual will and as evidenced by the land transactions.

(See section on Research in England for details of probable ancestry.)

Burleigh - (Notes on Judith) "Samuel Guile....married Sept. 1, 1647 Judith Davis, daughter of James Davis, one of the original settlers, and an emigrant from Marlborough England."

"The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury Massachusetts", by David W. Hoyt, (reprint 1981) P. 1062 - "Davis Family" - "James Davis. A James Davis m. June 11, 1618, Sysley Tayer (early form of the New Eng. name Thayer) at Gloucester (from Thornbury Parish Register, Gloucestershire, Eng.) It has been thought by some this may have been the marriage of the Hv. settler, claimed by Bible records to have come from Marlborough, Wiltshire, b. 1584-9; but other names and dates do not coincide. This may prove an ancestor of one of the other Davis families of Salisbury and Amesbury, or possibly Gloucester, Mass." "*The same register has Sicely Tayer bp. May 1, 1600. Also Frances Davys bp. Burleigh #2 "d. Sep 1675."

Died 16 Oct. 1675, shown in Records of Court of Assistants.

+ 3 ii Judith Guile (p. *) was born on 2 Apr 1650.

+ 4 iii John Guile (p. *) was born on 8 Dec 1652.

+ 5 iv Hannah Guile (p. *) was born on 12 Feb 1654/1655.

Burleigh #6. - "m. Nov 8, 1682 Peter Pattee, who was a shoemaker and probably the first to introduce that industry to Haverhill."

Pattee Family research (NEHGS REGISTER Oct. 1992, Jan & Apr 1993) show that Peter Pattee married Sarah Gill, the daughter of John Gill of Salisbury, not Samuel Gile of Haverhill. John Gill's Essex Co. probate file #10934 names daughter Sarah Pattee. Samuel Guile in his 1683 will, calls this daughter Sarah, and his other daughter by her married name, Judith Page, which evidence supports the Pattee research.

+ 7 vi James Gile (p. *) was born on 27 Aug 1660.

+ 8 vii Ephraim Gile (p. *) was born on 21 Mar 1661/1662.

SECOND GENERATION

(3) Judith2 Guile, (Samuel1) was born 2 Apr 1650 at Haverhill, MA, and on 21 Jun 1671 at Haverhill, MA, married Joseph Page who was born about 1648. Judith died on 28 Apr 1672 at Haverhill, MA.

(4) John2 Guile, (Samuel1) was born 8 Dec 1652 at Haverhill, MA, and on 3 Jan 1680/1681 at Haverhill, MA, married Sarah Garfield, daughter of Samuel Garfield and Mary Benfield, who was born 17 Jan 1654/1655 at Watertown, MA. John died on 4 Dec 1725 at Scituate, RI. Sarah was also married to William Sutton.

Burleigh #4. - "He was the executor of his father's will and was made a freeman at Newbury in 1678. In 1686 in open Haverhill town meeting, he charged Lieut. Johnson with attempting to cheat him by altering the bounds of land at Flaggey Meadows and taking in "near forty or fifty acres." A committee found that he and twenty others had trespassed upon the town ways. In 1694, for the sum of &16, he offered the town "the side hill adjoining great Pond" which offer was accepted, to receive "one-third current money, one-third good Indean corn, and one-third good fat cattle fit for slaughter." He was a house carpenter, and moved to Preston, Conn, in 1700. In a deed given in 1718, he is called of Providence, R.I., and March 31, 1726, Joseph Guile of Providence gave bonds as administrator on the estate of John Guile of Providence."

John Guile is listed among those "who have taken the oath of allegiance at Newbury, 1678", aged 23. In 1680, he married widow Sarah (Garfield) Sutton [originally from Watertown] at Salem; is probably the John Giles on the 27 Dec. 1681 rate list, and the John Gyles who was one of those who physically examined John Proctor and John Willard, suspects in the Witchcraft Trials. Here he probably established the association with the Rea and Herrick families, later evidenced in the marriages at Preston, CT. On April 8, 1702 Sarah Guile was admitted to the church at Preston, CT and son Joseph was born there 1701.

In 1706 he purchased land in Scituate village, Providence Co. RI. 4 May 1708 John Guile admitted as Freeman, of Scituate, Providence, RI. 6 Jul 1717 - Scituate Town Councill licensed taverns - "here followest the names of such men as are approued by ye Councill to keepe Tauern for ye yeare Insueing Prouided they pay ye sum ber under written aganst Each mans name as namely that is Each man pay ye sum sett against his names. (13 names including)....Mr. John Guile - 10 shillings." Mar. 10, 1721, John Guile paid 1 to keep tavern on town street. "Samuel Sewall, the famous Massachusetts judge and diarist, tells of traveling one September day in 1717 from Plainfield, Conn., to Rehoboth, Mass., a 38-mile trip which would take him straight through Scituate. He dined, he said, at the Guild's and was treated with great courtesy." Included in the Inventory of his estate taken 27 Dec. 1625 were "one bed Bed stead Cording and Covering in the Great Roome, One Trundle bed sted and 2 beds with the beding in the great Roome" and "2 beds and beding and Bedsteads Upchamber" and "2 Beds and some Covering" which suits an Inn. John died Intestate 4 Dec. 1725. His widow Mary refused to administer estate, and his son Joseph agreed to be adminstrator.

Bond's Genealogies & History of Watertown, Mass. - p. 232, shows Garfield, Samuel, 2nd m. 28 Sep 1652 Mary Benfield; their 4th child Sarah, b. 17 Jan 1654-5, m. __________Guile.

(5) Hannah2 Guile, (Samuel1) was born 12 Feb 1654/1655 at Haverhill, MA, and on 10 Mar 1680 at Salisbury, MA, married Thomas Clough, son of John Clough and Jane, who was born 29 May 1651 at Salisbury, MA. Hannah died on 22 Jan 1684 at Salisbury, MA. Thomas died about 1749 at Salisbury, MA. Thomas was also married to Ruth Connor.

Burleigh #5 - "b. Feb. 1654, died young."

New Hampshire Court Records 1640-1692 and CLOUGH GENEALOGY (1952-v.1) show marriage of Thomas Clough b. 29 May 1651 at Salisbury, MA. "On March 10, 1680, he married Hannah Gile who was born at Haverhill, Mass. on Feb. 12, or 25, 1655; the daughter of Samuel and Judith (Davis) Gile."

The Genealogy of Descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, Mass. 1952 - p. 47 "At the time of his marriage [to Hannah Guile], John Clough gave to Thomas six acres of land, now the site of the schoolhouse on Salisbury Plains (1950). This land adjoined the twelve acres that John Clough gave to his eldest son, John, at the time of his marriage. Thomas subscribed to the Oath of Fidelity and Allegiance in 1677. He joined the town militia for defense against the Indians. .... When the second church of Salisbury was organized in the West Parish, Thomas was one of the original twelve members and Ruth [2nd wife] was admitted to membership on July 27, 1718. Thomas' name appears on the list of "Yeoman" meaning in English Law, a freeholder, one who was qualified to serve on juries and to vote in town meetings in 1730. Both Thomas and Ruth signed petitions to the General Court."

Children:

18 i Samuel3 Clough was born 5 Dec 1680 at Salisbury, MA, and on 9 Sep 1702, married Sarah Roobe.

+ 19 ii Thomas Clough (p. *) was born on 9 Dec 1681.

(7) James2 Gile, (Samuel1 Guile) was born 27 Aug 1660 at Haverhill, MA, and on 21 Feb 1688/1689 at Haverhill, MA, married Ruth Parker, daughter of Joseph Parker and Mary, who was born 2 Jun 1661 at Andover, MA. James died on 29 Apr 1705 at Haverhill, MA. Ruth died after 1704.

Burleigh #7 - "James Gile, son of Samuel and Judith (Davis) Guile, born at Haverhill, MA Aug 27, 1660, married Feb. 21, 1688/9, Ruth Parker. He died at Haverhill April 29, 1705. The inventory of his estate mentions - home buildings and orchard, small piece of land near house, land at Jetts Lake, meadow at Pond Meadow, right in fourth division, meadow at Mistake, two common rights, 2 young oxen, 3 cows, 6 young cattle, 13 sheep, 11 lambs, 5 swine, horse, mare, colt, carpenter tools, arms, ammunition, books, etc. - 169 pounds. It was divided as follows: the widow one-third, Joseph one-fourth, Ebenezer one-eighth, Ruth one-eighth, Mary one-eighth, Elizabeth one-eighth, and Sarah one eighth of the remaining two-thirds."

James was called "Sam'l" in his father's will according to Burleigh. This was an error, as the original reads "James" and James inherited the same land specified in the will.

The Story of My Ancestors, by Rev. Edwin Sawyer Walker, says Ruth Parker was the daughter of the Rev. Thomas Parker, first minister of Newbury, MA. In "The Pioneers of Massachusetts" by Pope, p. 344, it is stated Rev. Thomas Parker "never married", and shows that probably her father was Joseph Parker, (possibly the brother of Rev. Thomas Parker) whose youngest daughter Ruth was born 2 June, 1661. Joseph was a proprietor in Salisbury 1639, a carpenter, who later moved to Andover, where his brother, Nathan, settled. All these three were originally from Newbury, England.

Burleigh #8 - "He lived at Haverhill and in 1711 was "one of the soldiers supplied with snow shoes for emergency in case of attack by the Indians." He was probably the Ephraim Gile who cut the first way to Cheshire, and was admitted an inhabitant of Chester in 1720."

THIRD GENERATION

(12) Samuel3 Guile, (John2, Samuel1) was born 18 Mar 1686 at Haverhill, MA, and about 1706 at Preston, CT, married Mary Goppy who was born about 1685 at Preston, CT. Samuel died in 1723 at Preston, CT. Mary died in May 1726 at Preston, CT.

Burleigh #11. "Possibly, late in life he moved to New York State."

"Samuel died young in 1723. His father John in Providence transferred some property that he still owned in Preston to Samuel's children. Aside from that, we know that Samuel and his brother Benjamin showed up on the tax rolls in 1717. In 1720, a new meeting house was built on the north side of Preston, and Samuel Guile, with his neighbor Samuel Herrick, was assigned the responsibility of bringing in 200 bushels of oyster shells, which would be reduced to lime over a fire and used for white wash or plaster. How he collected the oyster shells and brought them back would be interesting to know; it sounds like more than a one-day job. Building a meeting house was a great event, of course; plenty of rum and cider would be provided, as well as food; and when the North Preston group had completed the day's work, one enthusiastic member of the congregation, Elijah Belcher, climbed to the ridgepole and stood on his head. Some years later he was ordained a deacon. This anecdote has no moral." "He (Samuel) and his brother Benjamin signed their names in good firm script on a petition for a bridge." (The Guile Family in Connecticut unpub. mss. by Richard Giles)

Children:

38 i Mercy4 Guile was born 2 Apr 1708 at Preston, CT.

(14) Benjamin3 Guile, (John2, Samuel1) was born 13 Jun 1689 at Haverhill, MA, and on 1 Jul 1719 at Preston, CT, married Phebe Denison, daughter of Capt. William Denison and Mary Avery, who was born at Stonington, CT. Benjamin died in Mar 1725 at Preston, CT. Phebe was also married to Stephen Herrick.

Burleigh #13.

Benjamin Guile died Mar 1725 intestate, widow Phebe (Denison) Guile married 2nd, Stephen Herrick of Preston, CT 10 Nov 1726. Executors of Benjamin's estate were Phebe, her father Capt. Wm. Denison and her uncle William Avery. Estate totalled &443.09.00, of which &351.10.00 was "the farm with all fences, building and orchards", much livestock incl. 16 sheep. Preston CT land records show this Benj. Guile bought land from his father John Guile in 1713 and 1719. (Clough Genealogy)

+ 42 i William4 Guile (p. *) was born on 1 Mar 1722/1723.

+ 43 ii Phebe Guile (p. *) was born on 22 Jan 1724/1725.

(17) Joseph3 Guile, (John2, Samuel1) was born 18 Nov 1701 at Preston, CT, and about 1737 at Providence, RI, married Elnathan Harris, daughter of Richard Harris and Lydia King, who was born about 1715 at Smithfield, RI. Joseph died on 5 Aug 1785 at Hoosick, NY. Elnathan died in 1754 at Providence, RI and was buried at Lincoln, RI.

Burleigh #16 - "Joseph Guile, son of John and Sarah (Sutton) Guile, was probably born at Preston, CT about 1795 [sic][typo-1695]. Nothing is known of him except that he gave bonds as administrator of his father's estate on 31 March 1726, and is called of Providence, R.I."

Burleigh #42 - "Joseph Guile, son of Joseph and ______(_______) Guile, _______ married first Elethan Harris; married second at South Scituate, R.I., Dec. 24, 1758, Mary Franklin, daughter of Philip Franklin. He is called Joseph Jr. of Scituate. In his will, dated March 17, 1781, he gives "Joseph, son of Elethan, 10 and his mother's portion, all that her father gave her, and maintained him until he was seven years old." He died at South Scituate, Aug. 5, 1785."

NOTE - Burleigh appears to believe there was one Joseph #16 and a second one #42 for reasons that appear to be based on 2 conclusions -

(1) Burleigh showed #16 born 1695; and he showed the last child, Philip, b. 1777 - therefore he would have been 82 at last birth. The correct birth for #16 was 18 Nov. 1701 as in Early B. D. M. for Preston, CT; and for Philip, the actual Town Record shows born 23 July 1771, (the last digit was disfigured by a letter from the line above, he is included in the 1774 census), therefore Joseph was only 70 at the last birth.

(2) Joseph Guile Jr. of Scituate was made Freeman in 1759, and Burleigh concluded that this was the 2nd Joseph - #42 a son of #16. I contend that this was Joseph Guile Jr., the son of his first wife, Elnathan Harris, b. 1738, now 21. In 1739, Richard Harris in his will names his daughter Elnathan Gile. The reference to their son Joseph is interpreted to mean that they separated when he was 7 yrs. old, possibly about 1745.

The Joseph Guile b. 1701 was listed under Rhode Island Freemen, 1747-1755 - "Guile, Joseph, Scituate - 1748". Scituate records show Joseph Guile on 11 Jan. 1728/9 gave notice to town council of taking up a stray mare. He was one of the three original Highway Surveyors, when the township of Scituate was incorporated 1731. In the 1777 Census, Joseph Guile of Scituate is age 60+. His Will names all children; most Scituate VR's for about 1775 to 1815 were destroyed by fire.

Burleigh shows the name as Elethan Harris.

In her father's will dated 6 Mar. 1738/9, after bequests to sons, he lists - "Item I Give and Bequeath unto my Daughter Elnathan Gile the sum of one shilling Current money to be rased and paid out of my Estate by my executor herein after named and I do hereby constitute ordain and appoint my two sons viz. Amaziah Harris and Jacob Smith Trustees for the Taking care and looking after my afore named Daughter Elnathan Gile after my Death as her necessities may or shall Require ..." and set up a trust fund of 100 for her needs, also empowering the town council of Smithfield to be successor trustee. The will was proved Sept. 1750, with no further mention made of Elnathan. RI Historical Cemeteries Index shows Elnathan Guile died 1754, buried in Cem #LN529 in Lincoln, RI.

Ephraim and his brother-in-law, Jonathan Clough, formed a family company that moved a number of related families to Killingly, Conn., described as follows from The Genealogy of the Descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, Massachusetts pub. 1952 by The John Clough Genealogical Society, Inc. --"16-JONATHAN (John, John) Born April 11 1688 at Salisbury, Mass. Perhaps this grandson of John Clough lived a more exciting career than his seven brothers. Indians were increasingly hostile in 1710, and Jonathan began his military service when with his brothers he became a member of Capt. Eaton's Company and marched to Exeter to repel these dangerous foes. The previous year, 1709, he married Hannah Gile on December 31. She was the daughter of Ephraim and Martha (Bradley) Gile of Haverhill, Mass. Their first home was in Salisbury and both became members of the first church in 1715. --Ephraim Gile and Jonathan were interested in a new township called Cheshire, now Chester, N.H. In March 1720, surveyors laid out the lots and Ephraim and Jonathan became Proprietors of the town. Ephraim built a log house on lot 61 and cleared a piece of land. He helped to cut the first pathway from Haverhill to Chester and also the Haverhill Proprietors made another road from Kingston that same year. --Jonathan owned lots 55, 74, and 77, but he did not move to Chester, because a better opportunity presented in Connecticut. Ephraim Gile, Jr., brother of Hannah Gile Clough, and his wife, Judith who was also his cousin, were moving to Thompson, Connecticut where land was more level and easier to clear than in New Hampshire. Jonathan and Hannah and their five children joined the Giles in this migration in 1722. --Jonathan purchased 100 acres from Henry and Ebenezer Green and was eighth on the list of Proprietors of this new township, formerly a part of Killingly in the northeast corner of the Province of Connecticut. This was in reality a family enterprise, for Henry Green had married Hannah Clough's sister. (Judith Gile - #33)" --(Note - Participants in the above were Jonathan Clough and his two wives, Hannah Gile [dau. Ephraim] and Mary Gile [dau.James]; Ephraim Gile Jr. and wife; Sarah Gile [dau. James] and husb. Ebenezer Green; Judith Gile [dau. Ephraim Sr.] and husband Henry Green), and probably Mehitabel [dau. Ephraim] and her husband Nathaniel Johnson.

When the mother was slain, she held in her arms her only child Lydia, a year and 6 days old, born in the second year of her marriage. The child strangely escaped the tomahawk, concealed perhaps in the folds of her dress, grew to womanhood, and in her twenty fifth year married Ebenezer Gile. He moved from Haverhill to Hampstead in 1740; thence to Henniker in 1765; thence to Hopkinton, N.H. where he died about 1775. His widow died at Enfield in 1781. In 1743, he signed a petition to be set off from Kingston to Hampstead. He was a large speculator in lands, and in deeds is called a "trader"."

History of Henniker "During this year (1766) came the three brothers, Ebenezer, Noah and Joshua Gile, from Marlborough, Mass. and settled in the southeast part of the township....The following were residents of the town at the time of its incorporation, with their families...Ebenezer Gile, Joshua Gile...The first meeting of the inhabitants of the town after its incorporation was held November 25, 1768, and Silas Barnes was chosen clerk, and Ebenezer Gile, William Presbury and Jonas Bowman selectmen.
