Nellie Briles

Nelson (Nellie) Briles

Nellie Briles made the big leagues at age 21; he would soon pitch in the World Series.  At age 24 he won Game 3 for the St. Louis Cardinals in their epic triumph over the Red Sox in 1967.  The next year he lost Game 2 to Mickey Lolich and the Detroit Tigers, and had a no-decision in the Cardinals' Game 5 loss (Detroit won the Series in seven games).  Traded to the Pirates, Briles pitched the pivotal Game 5 of the 1971 Series won by Pittsburgh in seven games over Baltimore.  Briles shut out the powerful Orioles on two singles.  A ferocious competitor, Briles parlayed excellent control, and a willingness to let hitters put the ball in play, into a 14-year career with St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Texas, and Baltimore.  A former Pirates broadcaster, who is also an accomplished public speaker, Nellie was handling corporate relations for the Pirates, as of 1996.
