Photos of Zaberfeld, Germany

Zaberfeld Church

Zaberfeld Church

Zaberfeld was the home of Michael Kaefer and of Apollonia Kaefer.  Michael married Anna Maria Blankenbaker, as her second husband.  Apollonia married Anna Maria's brother, John Nicholas Blankenbaker, so the children in the two families were double first cousins.  Notice the road sign pointing to Schwaigern.

Zaberfeld Church

Zaberfeld Church Another view of the church with an emphasis on the May pole.  In 2002, we saw more imaginative work on the poles than in 2000.  The rules of the game require that the poles be put up with human labor only.  No machines can be used.

Zaberfeld Maypole

Zaberfeld Maypole The Zaberfeld Maypole use lots of color.  It was one of the prettiest that we saw.  Also it was still fresh (this was about two weeks after it was erected).  Compare this to the one for tisheim in 2000.

Zaberfeld Maypole

Here is another detail of the Maypole in Zaberfeld.  Usually, the signs or symbols on the pole are for the trades.  This one uses some of the nearby communities.  There is a movement to merge smaller communities into larger communities, which is not popular with the residents.
