The Nikolai Church in the old city was built in the 13th Century. The wrought iron crown of the 17th Century has become the symbol of the town. The Church was rebuilt following a fire in 1944.

Close to the Nikolai Church is the Upper Castle, which is on the highest point of the old city. Atop the castle, there is a "lantern", with eight windows, which give some of the best views of Siegen. This is the view to the North. The most prominent feature in the picture is the elevated expressway, which connects the towns to the north to Siegen. Note how the hills have influenced settlement. On the very right edge, at the upper side, is the University of Siegen, which is in Weidenau, a district of Siegen. In the
very background (just to the left of the center of the picture) you can recognize some multi-story buildings (only grey rectangles). This is not Siegen anymore. It is Kreuztal, a small town near Siegen. Atmospheric haze is a problem in distance photography.

Every town in Germany has its statuary. That's no BULL!
(Note from SgtGeorge: John is correct on this one. Just wish we could have seen shots of the other two. I'll bet that one of them was a bull. 'Course it all depends on what you mean by bull.)

Siegen is known for its centuries of iron working. This statue memorializes the Iron Worker. It, and the following statue, are about 100 years old, and have become the symbols of the Region.

This statue of the Miner is the companion to the Iron Worker above. It must have been hard work.
