Guttenberg Outer Gate (May, 2000) This is the outer gate of Guttenberg Castle. (Note from Eleanor:  In the picture, John is seen approaching the gate, which is raised (they probably saw him approaching from the tower and opened it). Normally, the gate would have been closed, and had I given them a hard time they would have poured hot oil on me from the box-like structure on the wall above the gate.) It is rather small, and the outer court yard had to be used for the routine chores. Guttenberg Castle Tower (May, 2000) (Note from Eleanor:  On a tour through the castle, John stopped on the top of the inner wall to take a picture of the tower. He anticipated that a few centuries later there would another style of railing atop the tower. At the height John is taking the picture from, it is about one-half of the tower height.) View from the Guttenberg Castle Tower (May, 2000) (Note from Eleanor:  John took this picture from the top of the tower, where he could see the countryside for several leagues.; The river below is the Neckar, where, in 1717, a number of our Germanna 2nd Colony ancestors would have been passing by, going down the river to America. Diorama of theThirty Years' War (May, 2000) (Note from Eleanor:  One of the large battles of The Thirty Years' War was fought near Guttenberg.; It involved about 30,000 men. This diorama of about 5,000 tin soldiers illustrates the battle at its height. The Protestants fared badly after one of their ammunition wagons exploded.) (File size:  800 x 527, 80,617)

Guttenberg Jousting   (May, 2000) Another Diorama. This one shows the jousting participants. (Note from Eleanor:  John actually prefers "Free Cell" to jousting, which looks as if one could get hurt.
