Windows Character Set Chart

HTML Cross Reference

(with character names)

by

Daniel Jacobson

Important Note: This chart is NOT any kind of Standard, see Related links to Official Standards and Comments at the bottom of this page.

You can enter almost any character into files or E-Mail created in Windows. If the character is present on your keyboard, just press that key. However, if it is NOT on your keyboard, you can still enter it by using the special key combination as shown below.

To code these characters in HTML,
type in &#nnn;
That's Ampersand, Pound Sign, the 3 digit numeric code, followed by a Semi-colon.
-OR-
type in &name;
That's Ampersand, Character name code, followed by a Semi-colon

To enter a character that is not on your keyboard in E-Mail or Windows files.
1. Locate the desired character in the chart below and note the corresponding 3 digit numeric code
2. Press the NUM LOCK key to activate the numeric keypad on the right hand side of your keyboard if it is not already on.
3. Hold down the ALT key and type 0 (zero) followed by the 3 digit numeric code from the chart, then release the ALT key. Use the numeric keypad only as the number keys across the top of the keyboard will not work.

This Chart shows how the characters will appear on YOUR system. They may appear different on other systems or with different browsers.
