Brooks Genealogy
John Brooks, Sr. was born around 1690 and d. about 1767. He is said to have come from England with his wife, Susan, and six sons in the early 1700s, coming first to the West Indies, then Virginia and moving from there to North Carolina. Records indicate that they also had a daughter, Martha. She may have been born after they arrived in Virginia or North Carolina. On May 9, 1755 John Brooks was granted 640 acres in Orange County by an agent of Lord Granville, bring the total of land he owned to about 1,500 acres. His home was included in Chatham County, when it was formed in 1770. In 1767 he deeded land to his sons and daughter.

Thomas Brooks settled in the part or Orange County that later became part of Chatham, County, NC. In 1751 he was granted 400 acres of land in Bladen County, by King George II, land lying on the southwest side of Cape Faire River, on cross Creek. In 1755 he deeded land to his sons, Thomas and Samuel, and in 1757 he deeded his son, Thomas, Jr. his plantation and "goods and chattels. Records show that he was granted about 2,500 acres of land prior to 1770. In 1757 he was a Road Commissioner. In 1775 he was one of the executors of the will of Joab Brooks, Sr., and in 1778 he was appointed guardian of Joab and John Brooks, and Sarah Brooks, children of Joab Brooks, deceased. Thomas Brooks, Sr. made his will in October, 1794. He named his wife, Mary, and the following children.
- Stephen Brooks, m. Mary____, in 1790 census in Chatham County with a family of 8. In 1803 he sold land and moved to Williamson County, TN.
- Thomas Brooks, Jr., b. about 1730 to 35, d. 1812, m. Martha Temple, b. abt. 1755, daughter of Samuel Temple, d. in Chatham County.
- Samuel Brooks, said to have moved to Williamson County, TN.

In September 1753 Zachariah Martin, Sr. deeded land to Zachariah, Jr., in Orange County, NC, because he was moving. The children of Zachariah Martin, Jr. and Rebecca moved to GA and MS.

- John Martin, listed as Captain. He married Elizabeth Terrell of Chatham County, NC, daughter of Timothy Terrell and Mary Martin. She was appointed admx. of his estate in Franklin County, GA, in 1811.
- Elijah Martin, moved to Franklin County, GA, prior to 1800
- Penelope Martin, m. Benjamin Bagley
- Nancy Ann Martin, m. Moses Terrell, son of Timothy Terrell and Mary Martin, moved from Chatham County, NC to Franklin County, GA, prior to 1796. Moved to Amite County, MS before 1812.
