Samuel, Mary, Betsy, Sallie, and Ruth. William Davidson, like his father, was a atriot in every
sinse of the word, and was by appointment of the Provincial Congress, april 22 1776, a Major in
the Fourth north Carolina Regiment. He was a member of the Continental Congress from North
Carolina from 1818 to 1821, and was also the first Senator in the Legislature of North Carolina
from the county of buncombe. The county of buncombe was organized at his home, and the first
County Court was held there. From an old record we get the following:

"B." "North Carolina, Buncombe County, april 16, A.D. 1792.--agreeable to a commission to us
directed, the County Court of said county was begun, opened, and held at the house of Col.
William Davidson, Esq. Present: James Davidson, David Vance, William Witson, William Davidson,

He was also a member of the Committee of Safety for Rowan County. At a meeting of this
committee held on Wednesday, Novembr 8, 1775, we find the following resolution:
"Resolved, That John Brevard, John Dickey, Moses Winsley, and Hugh Brevard, or any three of
them, attend at Capt. William Davidson's, on the 20th instant, to see that the company of minute
men, whom he has enlisted, are embodied, and able, effective men, and make report to the next

2S. Daniel Smithson SMITH
Notes for Daniel Smithson Smith:
Daniel Smithson changed his name to Daniel Smith according to Sheila Quinn The father of Daniel
Smith may have been Daniel Smith, b NJ, who moved to Augusta Co., VA.
Thanks to Sheila Quinn [email protected]
Daniel Smith is quite well know around Asheville. He was a frontiersman, pioneer and Indian
fighter. He and Samuel Davidson were business partners and they built the fort on the Swannanoa
and Bee Tree Rivers . It was a trading post and safe haven for settlers. The town of Old Fort
sits on this site today.

Samuel Davidson was a twin, his twin was William Davidson, Mary's father.--So does that make
us double cousins?? (answer, YES! - provided Mary Davidson that married Gabriel Ragsdale is
the daughter of this same Samuel Davidson - and some question this.) (Mark Freeman)

Daniel Smith hated the Indians and his head stone says that he fought hard to "wrest this land
from the savage foe."

Daniel and Mary Smith are buried at the Newton Grove Cemetery in Asheville. I am descended from
them through their youngest daughter, Sarah Smith Harrison who died from childbirth and is
buried with her parents at Newton Grove. Daniel's oldest son was very successful. He owned a
hotel on the square in Asheville and he owneda ferry. He had a very successful plantation. His
home, called Victoria, is a historic site in Asheville. It has been restored to the era when his
daughter and her husband lived there. It is also known as the Smith-McDowell house. Daniel's
long gun is in this home, hanging on a wall.

Hugh Harvey Davidson (my great grand father) a son Quincy who was killed in the Civil War, It seems that every web site has this also, that informatoin is false, Quincy is Harriet Qunicy Davidson a female who was killed during the Civil War. The family story goes In 1863, the Federals took possession of East Tennessee. General Vaughn, a Confederate: lived in that section. One of the first things the Federals did was to arrest General Vaughn's wife and send her to a northern prison. After Mrs. Vaughn was arrested and sent to a northern prison, the "bushwhackers" sent word to the daughters of Capt. G. W. Hayes, and Col. H. H. Davidson, that on a certain day they would come to take them to a northern prison. In some way, some Indians heard of it, so they, led by Pete Greybeard, an Indian, went to a little mountain between Valley River
Valley, and a place called Hanging Dog, and there concealed themselves until the "bushwhackers" came. From ambush they killed the leader, and the others fled, thus saving the young girls from an awful fate. That same day, Miss Hayes went to the home of Miss Davidson, and as they sat talking over the fate that might be awaiting them, they saw horse-men approaching at a distance. Of course their hearts sank for fear it was the "bushwhackers" coming for them, but to their joy and surprise, on approach it was Confederate home guards. They dismounted and were given water. The girls told them that on this day they were to be arrested and
taken to a northern prison. As they started away, the young ladies, loathe to see them leave, went out on the walk. Miss Davidson picked up her cousin, who was only a wee tot (Carrie Davidson, 18 months old, later married Wiley Green,) and as they stood watching the soldiers mount, the gun of one accidentally fired. Nine buckshot penetrated Miss Davidson's breast, and three or four entered the child's hand and arm. Miss Davidson lingered a few days and died.
She was buried in the dress that was to have been her wedding dress. She was engaged to Capt. Sumpter. Miss Davidson was buried in Murphy, N. C.
(Girls' names-Harriet Quincy Davidson, Jane Hayes).

82S. George Newton WHITSON
"Genealogy of the Davidson Family of the Duck River Valley" by Neil,Davidson & Davidson.
...George New Whitson, the father of William V. Whitson, of McMinnville, died in Gibson Co.,
Tenn, He was first cousin of the children of Hugh Davidson and Jane Vance, his mother being a
sistr of Jane Vance.

W - Goodspeed Bibliographies, 1887, Gibson County TN

George N. Whitson is one in a family of nine children born to George and Priscilla (Vance)
Whitson, both of whom were born in North Carolina and came to Tennessee in 1800. The father was
a farmer by occupation and a millwright by trade, and was fairly prosperous financially. He and
wife were members of the old Presbyterian Church, and he was living in Coffee County at the time of his death, which occurred in 1825. His wife died six months sooner. George N. was born
in 1817 and when about eight years of age was left parentless. He lived with an uncle until he
was eleven years of age, when he was taken charge of by the court and was bound out for a number
of years to serve an apprenticeship at the tailor's trade. Three years before his time expired
he bought his freedom and began life for himself. He at once went to Nashville and was employed
as superintendent of the tailoring department of the penitentiary at $50 per month, which
position he held for three years. At the expiration of that time he engaged in merchandising at
Middleton, Tenn., and continued about one year. He then moved to Bedford County and purchased
the mill and land at the three forks of Duck River, which he operated for about four years. In
1845, while in the mill business, he married Caroline Smart, daughter of Frank and Margaret
(Davidson) Smart, she was born in Tennessee in 1826 and became the mother of seven children, one
of whom is dead. At the expiration of his milling career he moved to the Flatwoods country and
farmed for one year, then purchased a farm in Maury County, on which he lived about seven years.
He then sold out and purchased the 700 acres of land where he now lives. His farm is well
improved and in a good state of cultivation, although especially adapted for stock raising. In
1861 he was conscripted into the Confederate service and remained twenty days when he was
released on account of being over age.
His wife died in February, 1864, and in December of the same year he married Margaret P. Neely,
daughter of J. and P. (Sandy) Neely. She was born near Nashville, in 1835, and bore her husband
five children, one son dead. He was magistrate in Maury County for seven years and he is a
prosperous and well informed citizen. He and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian
Church. He is a Democrat and of Irish descent.

96. Peter Cavanaugh WOODS Dr
WOODS, PETER CAVANAUGH (1819-1898). Peter Cavanaugh Woods, Confederate army officer, was born
on December 30, 1819, at Shelbyville in Franklin County, Tennessee, the son of Peter and Sarah
(Davidson) Woods. He graduated from Kentucky's Louisville Medical Institute in 1842 and in 1850
established a practice in Water Valley, Mississippi, where he married Georgia Virginia Lawshe. Woods moved to Texas in 1851. He settled first at Bastrop and in 1853 moved to San Marcos, where
he established himself as a planter. At the outbreak of the Civil Warqv Woods raised a company
of cavalry, primarily from Hays County, later to become Company A of the Thirty-sixth Texas
Cavalry regiment. This regiment was mustered into Confederate service at Camp Woods on Salado
Creek on March 22, 1862, and Woods was elected colonel when the regiment was organized. The
Thirty-sixth (often called the Thirty-second) Texas Cavalry regiment was recruited within a
fifty-mile radius of San Antonio. Nathaniel Benton, a brother-in-law of generals Ben and Henry
E. McCullochqv served as the regiment's lieutenant colonel. W. P. Woods, one of the colonel's
seven children, served as a trooper in his father's regiment. After instruction in drill and
tactics at Camp Clark near San Marcos in July and August 1862, the regiment patrolled the area
around Fredericksburg, then the scene of considerable unrest due to the large number of Union
sympathizers among its German citizens. Other companies of the regiment were posted along the
Rio Grande, with headquarters at Fort Ringgold in Rio Grande City, and along the Gulf Coast at
Port Lavaca, with the general responsibility for maintaining order in the Corpus Christi-
Brownsville-Eagle Pass triangle, protecting the ports, keeping Mexico trade open, and preventing
deserters and draft evaders from crossing the international border. In June 1863 elements of the
regiment were moved up the coast as far as Indianola in response to the threat of invasion from
Union general Nathaniel P. Banks.qv On July 12 Woods was given command of the First Cavalry
Brigade of Gen. Hamilton P. Bee'sqv division, which included Woods and Charles L. Pyron'sqv
Second Texas Cavalry regiments. On September 9 the regiment was ordered dismounted. It was to be
moved by rail to Beaumont, and its horses, the personal property of the men, were preempted by
the Confederate government. Woods protested the order and refused to obey it. After marching and
countermarching the Texas coast for several months in response to invasion alarms, 157 of
Woods's troopers deserted on the night of February 1, 1864. Granted thirty days leave, Woods
followed his deserters to their homes and returned with them to his camp. On February 20 the
highly unpopular dismounting order was finally executed, but on February 28 the regiment was
ordered to Louisiana for the Red River campaign,qv and remounts were hastily procured. The
regiment marched for Richard Taylor'sqv army on March 12, arriving at Pleasant Hill, Louisiana,
on April 9, too late for the battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. They were attached to Gen.
Thomas Green'sqv cavalry division and immediately marched for Blair's Landing in pursuit of
Banks's defeated army. On April 12 Woods and his men received their baptism of fire at the
battle of Blair's Landing, where General Green was killed. They skirmished daily with the
retreating federals through Grand Ecore, fought a determined holding action at Monett's Ferry,
and continued a running fight with the enemy until a spirited action at Yellow Bayou on May 18
in which Woods was wounded halted the chase. A rifle ball entered Woods's left hand and
traversed his forearm, exiting his elbow. Although he returned to service after only two weeks
of convalescent leave, he never fully regained the function of his left arm.

In the reorganization that followed Green's death and Bee's removal from command, Woods's
regiment became part of Xavier B. Debray'sqv brigade of John A. Wharton'sqv division. During
the next seven months the Thirty-sixth Texas Cavalry remained in Louisiana, patrolling the
Atchafalaya River from Alexandria to Opelusas. In February 1865 the regiment returned to Texas,
and at Houston on May 21, 1865, by order of Gen. John B. Magruder,qv it divided its public
property and disbanded. Following the war Woods returned to San Marcos to resume his medical
practice and farming. He was elected to the Constitutional Convention of 1866.qv Upon the death
of his first wife, Woods married Ella Reeves Ogletree in 1874; the couple had five children.
Woods died in San Marcos on January 27, 1898, and is buried there.
