In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this 15th day of June, 1824.
Signed, sealed, and disclosed in presence of
Joseph B. Porter, Jurat
John Mathews, Jurat JOHN DAVIDSON
(Porter was Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. Mathews, was a close friend who
had witnessed a number of John's legal transactions and had bought two parcels of land from him.
Both were members of Ebenezer.)

More and more old John Davi(d)son left the oversight of his farm to John Osimus and rode into town
to hob-nob at the courthouse with other Revolutionary veterans. There were more than 50 of them
from North Carolina in Maury County. They refought the "battles" in the back-county; they wondered
if it was true that Cousin Will's son Ephraim Brevard had tracked that Tory sniper to Missouri and
killed him. They talked of the news in the Nashville papers.
Nashville was a real city now, with 6500 inhabitants, exporting a million dollars worth of cotton every
year; there were a hundred stores and shops, street lights, coffee houses serving imported wines
and liquors instead of honest bourbon. Needless extravagance and luxury everywhere, immodest
clothes, sinful pleasure resorts. The whole world was going to the dogs, with society ladies taking
the cure from the laudanum habit. . .
Columbia was not trying to keep pace, though Samuel Polk's house and Kipwith Hall, the latter built
by Nathaniel Greene's daughter, were as fine as any houses anywhere. Mrs. Skipwith had bought
a piano, too, for evening concerts. Miss Lucy Lanier had moved her school from the Methodist
Church to the Masonic Hall. Pleasant Nelson's newly opened hotel was called "The Wayside Inn,"
and George Martin had just built a large frame house for his School for Ladies. The Reverend Hugh
Shaw was settled minister at Ebenezer. People were talking railroads. A number of citizens had
started breeding mules.
On September 16, 1820 the Tennessee General Assembly reaffirmed John Davison's grant of 5,000
acres (Maury County Deed Book H, Entry 455.) Another entry (Book J) made three weeks after the
above reads in part:

. . . the same John Davidson, for the natural love and affection which he hath and doth bear unto his
son John Osimus Davisdson, and more especially for an din consideration of the sum of five shillings,
does give 800 acres on Little Tombigby Creek and part of the same John Davidson's 5000 acre survey.
Witnesses, Vincent Ridley and E. E. Davidson.

Since it was customary to give acreage to each son when he married, one would be tempted to think
John had married in 1820; but his 1820 entry in the census of Maury County lists him as the father
of three children by that time.

There are a great number of entries in Maury County deed books showing sale and purchase of land
by the brothers Davidson and old John (I). Three of the most interesting are in Book I. On page
487 is a deed executed September 20, 1821, in which for $2000 the Thomas J. Davidson of the State
of Louisiana and the Parish of St. Helena sells to Ephraim E. Davidson of Maury County, 1000 acres
of the ? River, way over in western Tennessee, being a part of 3000 acres, granted Thomas J. Davidson
July 10, 1788, by the State of North Carolina, Grant No. ?

Entry 489, page 412, is for another 1000 acres sold by the same Thomas J. Davidson to Ephraim Ed
for $4000. And entry 735, page 575, is for 400 acres from the same grant, sold to John O. Davidson
for $1200.

Who was this Thomas J. Davidson? John's son, Thomas, was dead and would, in any case, have
been too young to receive a grant of Tennessee lands for Revolutionary War service. Old John's
brother, Thomas, is said to have gone 'early' to South Carolina; but of course he didn't have to remain
there and if he was like the other Davidsons, he didn't. Later we come across a young lady, a
Davidson from Louisiana, who married one of Ephriam Ed's sons, and was said to have been his cousin.

In 1822 the only child of old John and Frances Bateman, Cynthia Eliza, married 21 year old Paris
Dooley, half-brother of the Captain William Dooley with who Ephriam Edward Davidson (1) served
on the Creek Expedition. Cynthia was seven years older than her husband. On October 22, 1822
old John executed this deed:

. . . for natural love and affection, said John Davidson, hath and beareth unto the said Paris F. Dooley
and also for the better maintenance, support, and livelihood of said Paris F. Dooley . . . 400 acres . . .

The following day he made a gift to Cynthia:

. . . For love I have for my daughter Cynthia E. Dooley, I give the following slaves for life: Harriett
and her child Priscilla; Negro boy, Plum; Negro girl, Nancy; Negro woman and her child Frank . . .
after my death, with their increase forever.

He must have been feeling his age and wanting to set his house in order, for in December he executed
another document;

For natural love and affection I bear for my son, John Osimus Davidson, I give the tract of land on which
I now reside, containing 200 acres (reserving to myself the occupancy and entire benefit of said premises
during my natural life) and also a comfortable residence to my beloved wife, Fanny Davidson, if she
survives me, during her widowhood, to be secure from molestation or disturbance of any kind from the
said John Osimus Davidson . . .

Witnesses: Paris F. Dooley and John C. Neeley.

That year John's daughter, Ruth Malinda Clements Davidson Whiteside's husband Abraham died, and
on September 23 of the following year, she married Edward Chaffin, a friend of her brothers. Chaffin
and John O. were the same age. Born in Virginia, and moving after the Revolution to Bedford County
with his parents, he came later to Maury County, Tennessee. Edward Chaffin had been one of Captain
William Mitchell's spies in the War of 1812. Now he owned a thriving store in Columbia and was
considered the most eligible bachelor in town.

"The Chaffin garden was east of the house," Miss Mollie Mack wrote eighty years ago, "and, according
to the custom of the times, many people buried dead in the garden. There were several handsome
monuments in this garden . . . Jenkins Whiteside was the most famous lawyer in Tennessee in the
early part of the 19th century. He was related to Mrs. Whiteside, her brother-in-law. He died in
Nashville and his remains were brought to Columbia in a high state of decomposition and were buried
in the Chaffin garden." So the new husband moved into the Whiteside house, with the widow and her
son Richard.
Early that year, Jackson's campaign for the presidency got underway. Did the Davidson's support
him? How could they not have, being like him from North Carolina, violently Republican (as opposed
to Federalists), men of the frontier, as Presbyterian as his adored wife. He was the Hero of Tennessee.
In spite of his violence, his stubbornness, his vindictiveness and arrogance, he was on of theirs.
Of course they would have supported him.
Every ugly deed Andrew Jackson had ever committed, every stupid pronouncement he had ever made,
was spread over all the newspapers, thrashed over in Washington City, Richmond, Philadelphia,
New York, New Orleans - and most of all in Tennessee. Jesse Benton had never forgiven him. Now
he published 32 accusations against Jackson: broken political promises, brawls and duels, gambling
and cockfighting, horse racing, his connection with Burr, the execution of John Woods and the six
militia men, his conduct of the unauthorized Seminole War, his despotism as Governor of Florida.
The campaign was the next to the bitterest in history. Of course you know how the House of Representatives
had to choose between Jackson and Adams at last, and that was Henry Clay whose influence led to the
decisive vote - for Adams. So Jackson came home to Tennessee crying "CORRUPTION!"
And Tennessee agreed with him.
On September 12, 1823, the congregation of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Maury County, Tennessee
met to reaffirm the constitution of "Ebenezer Society," at long last, along with other early church records.
This constitution, the clerk of the session noted, was for "the government of the temporal concerns of the
church." Ten rules were decided upon and subscribed to by the 22 heads of families. Old James Reese
was among the signers, along with his sons-in-laws, Ephriam Edward Davidson, and his friend Zebina Conkey. Neither old John Davidson's or son, John Osimus Davidson's name appears on the list of communicants
at Ebenezer.    Some years later we find John O.'s daughter, Mary Malinda,    an ardent Episcopalian;
perhaps John and his wife were members of that church in Columbia.
Old John Davidson (I) had already apportioned his land among his children: 466 acres to Whiteside
when he married Ruth Malinda Clements Davidson; 900 acres to Ephriam Edward Davidson, 800 to
John Osimus Davidson, plus 200 more to be administered for his stepmother, Francis Bateman (Benenoir,
daughter of Revolutionary War soldier, Nathaniel Bateman); 400 to Paris Dooley, plus slaves for Cynthia,
his daughter by Fanny Bateman; 120 acres to John Martin, husband of Mary. (Why such a discrepancy?)
Now he made further preparations. Being seventy-four years old, on June 15, 1824 he made his will.
There are no periods in the body of the will; consequently it is hard to know just whom he willed his man
Condon to!

According to Mary's mother Sarah PARRISH Shunck Kennard in Natchez Court Records Book A,
p 151-153, Mary Ann was a child by her first marriage to Fredrich William Shink(sic) Mary was
born in 1771. Shunck died in 1771. Apparently Mary was raised as a Kennard.
If Lucy(Nancy) Kennard was indeed born in 1769, Sarah Parish was not yet married to Joseph

The Handbook of Texas is in error?:
DAVIDSON, WILLIAM FRANCIS H. (1811-?). William Davidson, surgeon in the Texas army,
was born in Tennessee. On January 14, 1836, he enlisted for six months in the Volunteer
Auxiliary Corps at Nacogdoches and during the San Jacinto campaign served as surgeon
of Col. Edward Burleson's First Regiment, Texas Volunteers. During the battle of San
Jacintoqv Davidson was detailed to remain with the sick at the army camp. Sam Houston
nominated Davidson as a surgeon, and his nomination was confirmed by the Senate of the
Republic of Texas on May 22, 1837. He was married in 1845 and lived in Rusk County.
He received a land warrant for 640 acres for his service at San Jacinto. In 1853 he received
320 acres and on June 4, 1857, he received 320 acres in Cooke County. In 1850 he was listed
as J. F. Davidson, farmer, with a wife named Mary and one child. In 1860 he, his wife, and
three children lived in Cooke County; his occupation was "M.D."
