Note from the Site Owner (as of Dec 2010): Per discussions with various researchers, it now appears very likely that the widow
Mrs. Nancy (Martin) Isbell married a different (and probably unrelated) James Davidson, versus being the wife of the above James Davidson
("person number 2") who was a son of Reverend Alexander Davidson of VA, NC and then Barren Co., KY. Also, it strongly appears that
the James Davidson shown below ("person number 3")...who married Martha Patterson...was also not the son of Reverend Alexander Davidson.
The list of the eight children shown above for "person number 2" seems correct (i.e., that is a "good list" for the children of the James Davidson
who was the son of Reverend Alexander Davidson...but see the caveat below for the son named Joshua Davidson). The wife of the above
James Davidson, however, was almost certainly NOT the widow Mrs. Nancy (Martin) Isbell, NOR Miss Martha Patterson.
There is apparently no proof that the Joshua Davidson who is shown as "person number 28" above was definitely a son of James Davidson
and his unknown wife, but DNA testing has shown that this Joshua Davidson was, in fact, a member of the same overall
Davidson family (DNA "Family 8" at www.davidsongenes.org). James Davidson and his unknown wife had eight children,
but only seven of them are known with certainty.

Chapter XXIX. A SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF REV. ALEXANDER DAVIDSON. Of his parentage,
place of his birth, and time, as well as of his birth, and time, as well as of his
pursuits in early life, we are almost entirely ignorant. He was of Irish extraction
and possessed many traits and pecularities of that ancient and noble race. We have
many reasons to believe that he was born in the State of North Carolina when it was
a colony of Great Britain, and that he was a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ
before he emigrated to this county in the early part of the last century. He was
married in North Carolina twice, but we don't know the maiden names of either of
his wives. By his first wife he had nine children. After her death he married a
second time to Mrs. Mary Jones, a widow with one child, a daughter named Rachel.
By her he had ten children. In all, including his step-daughter, Rachel, he had
twenty. Ten of them were born in Kentucky. Their names were Jesse, Allan, Abram,
Jacob, Ellice, Asa, Rachel, Albert, Elizabeth, Sarah, James, John, Alexander,
Hezekiah, William, Margaret, Elijah, Benjamin and Isaiah. He was fond of Scripture
names, as is evident from the names of his children. He was survived by all of his
children and by his second wife; by her for many years, until 1845. Jacob married
Mary Winn, the daughter of Thomas Winn, for many years Justice of the Peace for
Barren County. He is the only child now living. He and his wife with about twenty
children are living in California. Sarah married George W. Holland, a shoemaker of
Glasgow. Both are dead. Elizabeth married Dr. Benjamin Thruston, a teacher and a man
of fine classical education. Both are dead. Benjamin married a Miss Depp, daughter
of Wm. Depp, and Isaac married a Miss Dodd. All of the above left children, and two
last, large families. We do not know who the others married. Some of them remained
single. One or more of the sons became preachers. There were no more respectable
citizens in Barren County. In this and in Warren county are many of their descendants
living, esteemed generally. Alexander Davidson, as well as many of his children,
was a stout, robust and muscular man, of much energy, with a sound, strong mind,
industrious and trustworthy. As soon as he settled in this county, he commenced
preaching, and aided by Carter Tarrant and J. Hightower, organizing churches.
He organized the church of Sinking Creek in Warren County and was its pastor almost
till his death, which occurred in 1817. Mount Tabor (originally called Beaver Creek)
was organized at an early day, by him, Carter Tarrant and Wm. Hickman.
He also assisted in constituting other churches. He was a zealous, industrious and
active preacher, plain in his manner and address, faithful to the practices of the
church. His walk was upright; he was honest, truthful and humble. He was a kind husband,
father and neighbor and a humane master. He owned a number of slaves and other property,
which was not, with the exception of a few legacies, distributed among his descendants
until the death of his wife in 1845, the whole having been given to her during her life.
He was a member of the convention which formed our second State constitution, on the
17th day of August, 1799 - being the only delegate from Warren County. He died on his
farm in the forks of Beaver Creek and the South Fork, where he had resided many years.
His descendants are scattered over the West and the South, only a few left in Kentucky.

22. Richard DAVIDSON
"Amanda Odom" [email protected]

Richard Davidson, b. 1783 (not sure it was in KY), siblings were Nancy, Alexander,
Margaret, Reuben, Elizabeth, Joshua (?). Married Tracie Perry, Barren County, KY, 1806.
Moved to Pike County, MS.
Children: Felix, Sarah, Caroline (b. 1813), Samuel (b.1816)
Tracy died in 1822 or 1823.
Richard married Isabella McKay of Cumberland, NC in 1823; they never had children.
In the late 1840's Richard, Isabella, Caroline, Samuel and Richard's nephew John G.
(Felix's son) moved to Phillips County, AR. Richard began buying land and raising
crops, mainly corn; at his death he had around 1700 acres, a house in Helena, AR and
a plantation home which had given to his son, Samuel.
Richard died in 1856; he is buried at Davidson-Lamb Cemetery in West Helena, AR.

Felix remained in Mississippi; don't know why his son went with Richard to AR.

Sarah married a man by the last name of May, and died in MS in 1860.

Caroline married Ira M. Lamb in 1845 and they lived in Helena, AR. She died in 1862
and is buried in Davidson-Lamb Cemetery. (I have names of children, if anyone wants them.)

Samuel married Matilda Hart in 1850. (His nephew John G. married Matilda's younger
sister Margaret). Samuel and Matilda had no children of their own, but they raised,
or took in at least 4 other children, among them Ben Higgins and his little sister
Lillian (b. 1866/1870). The Higgins family came from Illinois, but how Ben and Lillian
came to be raised by Samuel and Matilda is unclear.
Matilda died in 1888. It is said that some of her last words were "What will become of
my poor Lillian?"
Samuel married Lillian in 1889; by then the other children they had raised were already
married and living elsewhere. By now, Samuel was 73 and Lillian only between 19-23.
Family members say that he married her so that she would inherit the property, but
whatever the case, they had 3 children:
	Children: Agnes May (b. 1890), Claude (d. 1898 of typhoid), Ruth Carmen (b. 1897)
Samuel had inherited the bulk of Richard's property when Isabella died, but over the years
he gave a good deal of it to the heirs of his sister Caroline, and he sold much of the
property piecemeal.
Samuel died October 1898, and is buried beside his first wife, Matilda, in
Davidson-Hart cemetery in West Helena, AR.

Lillian remained in Arkansas for some time with Agnes and Ruth (my grandmother), then
moved to Tunica, LA. She became a nurse and never remarried. She died in 1945 in Tunica.

Agnes married M. Richard Wells. Their children were:
Richardine (b. 1911) who married Augustus Beauregard "Jack" Wells; (d. 1999).
Ruth Doris (b. 1913)-not sure who she married
  Arlington Davidson (b. 1918, d. 1992)

Ruth married Lawrence Allen Odom. Their children were:
Lawrence Allen , Jr. of El Paso, TX (b. 1919 in Alexandria, LA)
Harold Vincent (b. August 6, 1922, Alexandria, LA, d. February 18, 1999, buried in Monroe, LA)
   m. Joyce Barr 1950, d. 1957
   m. Joyce Kay Fowler 1963
Betty Faye (b. 1927, Alexandria, LA), married Ralph Coleman
Gladys Maye (b. 1927, Alexandria, LA), married Norman White

Harold Vincent Odom and Joyce Barr had 2 children, Harold Leon, b. 1948, and Susan Leitha,
b. 1951. Harold and Joyce Fowler had 2 children, Erin Elizabeth, b. 1963 and Amanda
Gayle, b. 1968. --Amanda Odom [email protected]

115S. Elijah T. SWINDLE
From Billie [email protected]

1890 Itawamba County Tax List shows: E. T. Swindle, p. 13, Township of Pleasanton.

Elijah Swindle was "murdered", shot off his horse on the "Riley Moore place", in 1897 by
brothers Bluford (Bluth) Steele and Tilt Steele. The story goes that Elijah was about
to testify in court against Bluth Steele about the burning of the Maxcy Gin and Steele
went looking for him and "bushwacked" him. The story says that Elijah was shot in the
back. (A descendant has the shirt Elijah had on at the time he was killed and there was
a bullet hole, but it no one can remember where the hole was and it is uncertain who has
the shirt now.) Bluth was sent to jail because he shot Elijah and Tilt was sent to jail
because he owned the muzzle load rifle that was used.

The Steele brothers had another brother named Josh. Josh was a "moonshiner" and it is
rumored that he supplied whiskey to the judges in that area. It is "believed" that Josh
paid off the judges and had the charges reduced from murder to manslaughter. Both brothers
were sentenced to 5 years in jail. Bluth ended up serving 7 and Tilt died while still in
jail.

But there is another account of the story. Clovis Steele wrote the following on Oct. 4,
1995....

"There was some sort of misunderstanding or disput between Joshua Taylor Steele and Elijah
Swindle during the mid 1890's and a discussion of these differences took place on a road
in Itawamba County in 1895. In addition to Elijah and Joshua, James Bluford (Joshua's son)
was also present. Words were exchanged and Elijah pulled a gun. Bluford took the gun
from Elijah and no violence occured.

Elijah was very bitter and was seen by Sally Ann (Chaffin Steele), Bluford's wife around
their house.

Sometime later, Bluford and his younger brother, Tilt, had been squirrel hunting and were
on their way out of the woods when they met Elijah Swindle astride his horse hiding behind
a big tree. After they walked past, Swindle shot at them, striking Bluford in the ankle.
Bluford returned fire, knocking Swindle down. He and Tilt went back into the woods to let
things quiet down. Afterwards they went by Elijah's house, finding out that he was dead.
The bullet struck Elijah in the elbow and then into his heart. They noticed the shirt Elijah
had been wearing was hung out at that time but was missing at the time of trial. The shirt
would have shown Elijah was shot from the front.

There was much perjured testimony at the trial, principally that coming from Dr. Copeland.
Dr. Copeland was involved (romantically) with one of the Swindle women.

A descendant of the Maxcy family said the mill burned soon after the death of her father
(1922) and that a member of the Williamson family was convicted and served time for the
crime.

Ezra Steele (b: 8 Feb. 1903), son of Bluford, and still living verified the above facts
and remembers hearing the story when he was growing up.

Bluford and Tilt Steele went to prison, where Tilt died of a fever and Bluford served
less than a year before being pardoned."

Now both stories have been told, it is up to the reader to decide which version is to be believed.

It is unknown if the family story is correct about Elijah planning to testify in court,
but the Swindle family was connected to the Maxcy family through the marriages of some
of the Hood family who were also married to some of the Swindles. In 1900 Josh Swindle
lived next door to a V. B. Maxcy.

Some of the court records were located and the following information was obtained regarding
the trial which was started on Sept. 8, 1897 and sentencing was held on Sept. 8, 1898,
Case #2903: Bluford and Tilt Steele were both sentenced to imprisonment in the State
Penitentiary (Parchman) for a term of five years each. (The actual charges or details
of the case were never mentioned in the court minutes and no other records could be found.)

Also, William T. and Bluford Steele started serving their five year sentences on February
20, 1899. An Inmate ledger in the archives at Jackson, MS shows that J. B. Steele was
pardoned on Dec. 1, 1899. No mention of William Tilt Steele or his death.

The list of witnesses that appeared is quite lengthy. A complete list was obtained and
the amount of money paid to each is also indicated. A few of the more interesting names that
appeared were: R. C. Carpenter, J. R. Carpenter, Josh Hood, Josh Swindle, Lenia Carpenter,
Mrs. Senia Swindle, Victoria Swindle, Dr. J. Copeland, M.D.L. Wigington, G. W. Grissom, R.B.K.
McFadden, D. N. Grissome, and J. H. Files.

As a matter of interest, the minutes of the court indicated that the "witnesses for the
State" were each paid $100.00. (For travel expenses, etc.)

It is unknown what happened to Irene after Elijah's death. She could not be located in
the 1900 Itawamba Co., MS census, nor could she be found in AL. It is entirely possible
that she died before the 1900 census was taken or the census taker "missed" her.

The Mississippi Archives was contacted in an attempt to locate a copy of the "Fulton Beacon"
for 1897 to try to find a copy of the newspaper article (if there was one) to get the true
story of what happened in the shooting of Elijah. No copy was on file. Also, no cemetery
record could be located for either Elijah or Irene. It is believed that Elijah is buried
in an unmarked grave near Mud Creek in Itawamba Co., MS.

Notes for IRENE DAVIDSON:
It is believed that Irene's full name was Arcena Irene Davidson; however, no concrete proof
has been discovered at this time. The 1870 Walker Co., AL census records shows the wife of
Elijah Swindle to be Caroline. The following information about Irene Davidson's brother,
Ben, was located in the 1910 Prentiss Co., MS Census Records:
