Jesse Spurling and Sarah Peters

Jesse Spurling and Sarah Peters

Jesse was a Pvt. In Capt. Patrick Shaw's Co., 1 Regiment, Ohio Militia; appears on several muster rolls and pay rolls: rolls say service commenced on 6 Feb 1813, but by May 31, 1813 at Camp Meigs they say he was sick. The July 7th roll covering the Feb. to April period was written at Hamilton. Two rolls say expiration of service was 6 Aug 1813, but another one has the remark "Died 17 July 1813." The file includes an original printed document signed by David Sutton, clerk at Lebanon 21 Oct 1813, which says Jesse died intestate. The Court of Common Pleas, which he represented, chose Sarah Spurling to be administrator for Jesse. {Documents at National Archives 2nd floor}

Sarah, age 88 on 3/3/1851, resident of Warren Co., Ohio swore she was the widow of Jesse who served in Capt. Patrick Shaw's company during the War of 1812. She said the regiment was commanded by Colonel Mills and that Jesse served as a substitute from Feb. 15th until about June 13th 1813 "at which time he died in service at Ft. Meigs in the state of Ohio and in consequence of his death never obtained a printed or written discharge." "She was married to the Jesse Spurling in Hampshire County State of Virginia." Her maiden name was Sarah Peters. Henry Spurling testified that Sarah and Jesse lived together as husband and wife. This was sworn before Wm. Crosson, J.P. of Warren Co., Ohio. Nothing in the file folder, "Jesse Spurling - bounty land application: # 93232", explains the reason for rejection.
