Jesse Spurlin and Frances Gosnell
Jesse had children from first marriage as follows: Liege, Jonas, Dborna, Anne, Harve, Nelson and Phebe. He moved from West Virginia to Ohio with his father's family, then moved to Shelby county, Indiana with his brothers Tunis & Joshua, some sisters came later. Jess settled on land between Slash creek & Lewis creek.
Fannie was 18 years old when they came from KY. They had a wagon with household goods and oxen pulled it. Mammie and little ones rode. Fannie and her father walked most of the way to Rush Co., IN. Where Fannie married Willis Barlow, had children moved to Indianapolis and bought 40 acres about where Crown Hill is now a cemetery. They moved back to Rush Co. where Willis died. The widow moved to Shelby Co., and lived with her sister Sarah and brother-in -law Austin Clark where she met and married Jess Spurlin.
The following is quoted from Frances Spurlin Garard's notes (1929):"
Her mother (Frances's mother) lived with Grandpa Coffman until five years before she died. Grandpa Coffman had a farm and when he died it was sold off. Frances's mother got three hundred dollars and his children the rest was divided among them. At that time, she had a large breast tumor which was worked on by a charm doctor - grew worse, then was removed by two home doctors, it weighed 9 pounds, she got well rapidly. Tunis Garard had bought her life interest in the place. He was to give her 150 dollars a year and a home at their house when she wanted to be there. She stayed with her daughter, Areal and bought a home in Fairfield, near Kokomo. She spent time with Frances, then died three weeks after moving her furniture and household goods to Frances's from Fairfield. She gave Frances a beautiful blue Craig coverlet and she has it yet. If it has pipes in "trade mark" corner, it is a genuine Craig Sr. work. She remembers her mother dyeing and getting wool from Hope to the Greensburg weaver."
