Deeds between Matthew and his father are recorded in dB 25, p.177, dB 35, p.58 & 279. The property he received from his father's estate was sold in 1825, dB 35, p.276. Matthew and Sina left Berkeley Co. at that time and went to Butler Co. Ohio where they began paying personal property taxes in 1826. While still living in Butler Co. Matthew purchased 80 acres in Rush Co. Indiana, dB B, p.487. The family did not move to Rush Co. until sometime after the 1830 census. Their daughters, Maria and Margaret, were married in Butler Co. Ohio.

While living in Rush Co. Indiana four of their children were married - Sarah Jane in 1832, Sina C. in 1839, Isabel in 1840, and Matthew J. in 1844. Matthew and Sina sold their land 21 Sep 1849, dB S, p. 56.

The family moved west to Montgomery Co. Indiana where they were found in the 1850 census. Matthew bought land 12 Feb 1852, dB 17, p. 541, and 28 Jan 1853, dB 18, p. 553. In October Matthew died intestate. Sina, widow of Matthew and their children, Samuel D. & Mary Ann his wife, Lemuel Burk & Isabel M. his wife, Robert Dearmond & Margaret H. his wife and David & Ellen his wife are listed as the heirs of law of Matthew. Matthew was buried in the cemetery at the western edge of New Richmond. He was 72y 5m 17d at his death. A couple of years later his daughter, Margaret, was laid to rest next to him.

Shelby Co., Indiana Probate Order Book 2, 1856-1858, p. 213 lists Martin M. Ray as the appointed administrator of Sina Garard's estate, 5 Dec. 1858. Her son, David signed a receipt 31 May 1856 for his share of what his mother would have been entitled to had she been living as the widow of Matthew R. Garard.
