  • Strange Problems and Crashes solved by recopying the CD's
  • From Louis Puster 2/21/2001 - Amazing Solution
Ever since our network was set up, we were plagued with strange problems and FS crashes. Example: Two of my test cases were:
    1. Search for AFN VK9H-F9 and press F8, FS crashes after filling 3.1 progress bars - Temp. unable to run FS if you choose 5 generations. It works if you choose 4 or less.
    2. Search for Brigham Young and press F8 and choose 5 generations, FS crashes after filling 55 progress bars, with the same error message as before. In each case, FS loops consuming 100% CPU time. There were other strange problems too.

Someone reported that reloading the CDs helped them. Thinking that CD data is checked with things like parity and CRC like floppy and hard disk files, I didn't really believe it was possible to misread the CD without detecting an error. HOWEVER, I did reload the AF CDs and my test cases are now fixed!!!

I think this solution is worth a special mention on the Web site as it is something that most people would reject as time consuming and not likely to fix anything.

    Louis.
