1796 Spinning Wheel-Flax Premium Entitlement
The "Spinning Wheel Entitlement" was a scheme to encourage the linen trade. Free spinning-wheels or looms were granted in to individual farmers. The list, published in 1796, is arranged in alphabetical order. Since most of the flax was grown in Ulster Province, most of the 60,000 names are associated with the counties there. The list is important as it places a person in a county and parish during that particular time frame.
A surname index for the Spinning-Wheel Entitlement is available on microfiche (PRONI reference MF/7) or a typescript copy is available in the Search Room (PRONI reference) T/3419.
