Daniel Greeno of Rutland and Descendants

The Life and Descendants of
Daniel Greeno
of Rutland, Vt.
by Todd A. Farmerie

Preliminary Draft

In the first half of the 19th century, several of the children and grandchildren of Daniel GREENO of Rutland, Vermont settled in the adjacent counties of Tioga and Bradford Co., Pa., and Chemung Co. New York. The number of family members who settled in the area, and their use of certain common names makes the identification of individual family members difficult. However, by a complete cataloguing of the known members of the family, certain insight can be gained.

Daniel GREENO was born in 1751/2, and by 1774 is said to have been in Vermont, but the title to his early land proving bad, no record of this early purchase survives. He married Lydia, called RICE by his grandson Benjamin Rice GREENO, but PRICE by a descendant of probable grandson Jotham. The former is the more likely, coming as it does from a grandson who appears to have been named for her family. No record has been found of the birth of their eldest son, Daniel, but several of their sons' births are recorded in Rutland, starting in 1776. During the Revolutionary War, Daniel was a member of several militia companies in 1778 (Capt. John Smith, Col. Warren, 7-13 Nov.), 1779 (Capt. Tehan Noble, Col. Warren, May 3-18 Jun.), 1780 (Capt. Samuel Williams, Col. Ebenezer Allen, late Oct-early Nov), and 1781 (Capt. Samuel Williams, Col. Thomas Lee, 21 Oct-2 Nov.), and is said to have participated in the Battle of Bennington, where Lydia is said to have served as a nurse. In _____, Daniel ______. Daniel died Sunday, 22 Feb. 1807, and was buried in a small family cemetery on his land. (Some time later, this was removed, and the residents (but not their stones) reburied at the Evergreen Cem., Rutland. Daniel and Lydia were then memorialized on the stone of their son Amasa and his family, but the chronological information provided there is inaccurate, misplacing both his birth and death.) His widow Lydia declined the administration of his estate, recommending son Daniel instead, and on 9 Mar. 1807, Daniel, Jr. was appointed guardian. In an account dated the fourth Monday of July 180-8, Daniel's estate was valued at $1842.33, of which articles deemed to belong to the widow constituted $150.00. Minus fees, expenses and claims, his final estate was valued at $1453.20, the widow's third being $484.31, which was paid to Lydia. On 22 Oct. 1808, Lydia and her son Oliver were appointed guardians of her daughter Polly. She is speculated to have then remarried 21 Feb. 1809 to John Howe of Plattsburgh, NY, witnessing the War of 1812 battle fought at that town, and then to Nathan Fay of Jericho, VT, perhaps being the Lydia Fay who died 8 Jun. 1835, aged 79. (This again does not match the dates on the non-contemporary tombstone in Rutland.)

Additional documents within Daniel's probate file provide the names of most of the children of Daiel and Lydia. Lydia nominates son Daniel GREENO, Jr. to be administrator. John GREENO of Batavia, NY, and Moses GREENO of Rutland were appointed guardians of Emerson GREENO, son of the deceased, while widow Lydia and Oliver GREENO of Catherine, NY were appointed as guardians of daughter Polly. Likewise, a partial division includes shares going to Lydia, and children Moses, John, Emerson, and Samuel GREENO. This list of children leaves out several agreed by different lines of descendants to belong in the family. A reunion notice from Bradford Co. Pa, compiled during the lifetime, and certainly with the consultation of, grandchildren of Daniel and Lydia state that the family in that area descends from brothers Samuel, Leonard, and Emerson GREENO. The biography given by Benjamin Rice GREENO for the History of Rutland County indicates that his father, Amasa GREENO, was likewise a son of this couple. Finally, a letter written by Amasa's daughter, Maderna Van Horn (GREENO) POND, to Bathsheba (GREENO) SPALDING, daughter of Emerson, states,

"Old Grandfather's name was Daniel his wife was Lydia. They had eleven children, Daniel, John, Moses, Samuel, Oliver, Leonard, Emerson, Amasa, Polly, Clara; one who died in infancy don't know whether it was a son or a daughter.

She don't remember of ever hearing that Grandfather was in the war but Grandmother was with Aunt Clara who lived in Plattsburg when the battle was there in 1812 she heard her say the house they lived in was shot full of bullet holes but did not any of them get hurt."

One aspect of this account is at variance with the estate documentation, however. Based on the money distributed among the four children who received their shares, and the amount of money remaining, the division appears to have been into nine shares, while the account of Mrs. POND would give us 10 children surviving at the time of Daniel's death. This cannot be rectified at this time.

Children of Daniel and Lydia (RICE) GREENO:

  1. Daniel, b.ca. 1774
  2. Moses, b. 18 Dec. 1776, Rutland

1. Daniel GREENO, b. ca. 1774, (Daniel) in 1791, he was a member of the Congregational Church of Sudbury, Vt., but by 1803 he was back in Rutland. He had married Sarah BROWN, and in 1805, he was granted his father's land, in exchange for allowing his parents to live there, and promising to support his siblings until adulthood. On 9 Mar. 1807, he was recommended by his mother to administer his father's estate, and he was appointed administrator, along with Matthew Linton, the same day. On the fourth Monday of July 1808, he filed a partial account of the administration of the estate. He operated a gristmill in 1810, and also a store that he opened in Mar. 1809, and subsequently moved several times. In 1811, he mortgaged a lot in Pittsford, but appears not to have been there long. In 1818, he moved to Madrid, St. Lawewnce Co., NY, and in 1820, he appears in Louisville, NY, moving on to Malone, Franklin Co., NY, in 1821, dying there 31 Sep. 1831. The one published account of his children is somewhat confused, but that information is provided here with modification.

Children of Daniel and Sarah (BROWN) GREENO (perhaps incomplete):

  1. Silas, b. 6 Nov. 1793, Sudbury
  2. (prob.) the 'child of Mr. Greeno' who d. 24 Aug. 1798.
  3. Samuel, b. 26 Sep. 1798
  4. Philander, b. 25 Sep. 1799, d. 10 Nov. 1799, Sudbury
  5. Lydia, b. 27 Sep. 1799, d. 5 Nov. 1802, Sudbury
  6. Electa, b. 12 Aug. 1800, Sudbury, m. 23 Nov. 1843, Eli FARMER
  7. Daniel, b. 7 Jan. 1804, Rutland
  8. Amos Himes, bap. 23 Aug. 1807
  9. Sally, b. ca. 1809, bap. 13 Oct. 1811, m. 8 Nov. 1827, Eli FARMER
  10. Eliza, bap. 13 Oct. 1811 (perhaps child d. aged 2, 15 Apr. 1812)
  11. Elijah Brown, bp. 3 Jul. 1814 (perhaps child, aged 1, d. 8 Aug. 1814)

2. Moses GREENO, b. 18 Dec. 1776, (Daniel) married about 1795, and in 1800 was in Rutland with his wife and one son. He was still in Rutland on 11 Jan. 1808, when he was appointed one of the guardians of his brother Emerson. He received $107.62 as his share in the division of his father's estate recorded in a partial administration dated the fourth Monday of July, 1808 (plus Emerson's share of an equal $107.62 was paid to his guardians, brothers Moses and John). By 1812, he had relocated to what was then Tioga Twp., Tioga Co., Pa., owning 210 acres. This is the last record that has been found of him. However, substantially later, his widow Anna was buried in the Evergreen Cem., Troy, Bradford Co., Pa., having died 26 Jan. 1845, aged 72. This perhaps allows his family to be reconstructed. In 1829, Daniel FORD, husband of Polly (REYNOLDS) named Clarissa, Laura, and Eliza Greeno in his will, while he adopted his niece Experience Greeno. It has been speculated that Polly's sister Anna REYNOLDS was wife of a Greeno son of Daniel. A Laura GREENO married Charles Himes, naming a son Moses, and had provisionally been assigned to Moses independent of the FORD will. In light of this, it is likely that Moses married Anna REYNOLDS, and that the nieces of David FORD were their daughters. Anna was likely the 60-70 year old woman living with Amasa Greeno in Troy in 1840, and thus he can reasonably be hypothesized to be her son. Several other young women and a young man were living with Amasa in that year, and these were probably additional children of Moses and Anna. These hypotheses are confirmed by the account of Myra Greeno Bass.

Children of Moses and Anne (REYNOLDS) GREENO:

  1. Hiram, b. ca. 1800, probably the "Young Greeno, nephew of Danl." who contributed to repairing a mill in 1818. He d. 26 Sep. 1820, having taken an overdose of opium, being distraught over an unfaithful lover.
  2. Loren, b. 30 May 1802
  3. Amasa, b. ca. 1805, Vt.
  4. Clarissa, b. ca. 1807, m. Archibald MAYNARD
  5. Laura, b. 1809, m. Charles HIMES
  6. Eliza, b. 1814, m. Charles LAMB
  7. Experience, adopted by David and Polly (REYNOLDS) FORD (perhaps the Experience m. William BENTLEY ca. 1830, but see below)

3. Samuel GREENO, b. 14 Oct. 1778, Rutland, (Daniel) he married at Sudbury 3 Dec. 1801, as his first wife, Bathsheba METCALF. He was paid his share, $107.62, of his father's estate, as recorded in the partial administration dated the fourth Monday of July 1808. He was perhaps in what was then Tioga Co., NY in 1810 (recorded as Samuel Green), and served in the War of 1812, building boats at Buffalo, and commanding one of them in an attack at Black Rock. Following the death of his first wife, and by 1821, he remarried to Matilda FISHER, b. 1793, at Orwell, Vt. In 1820, he bought land in Bethany, Genesee Co., NY, the where his brother John also lived, Samuel and Matilda selling it in 1821 but buying another plot the next year, which they sold in 1826. In 1839, brother Oliver transferred to him his land in Leroy Twp., Bradford Co., and he is listed there as a joiner and carpenter. He continues to appear in Leroy, and starting in 1841 also in neighboring Columbia Twp., through 1843, when presumably he moved to Johnstown, Barry Co., Mich., where he died in the fall of 1849, followed within two months by his wife and son Isaac, who died the same night, and son Horace who died two weeks after them. Son Harris then went to live with a brother in Owego, NY, but it is uncertain which of their sons this would have been.

Children of Samuel and Bathsheba (METCALF) GREENO:

  1. Samuel, apparently dead by 1810.
  2. Jotham, b. ca. 1803
  3. dau. (perhaps the Experience m. William BENTLEY, but see above and below)

  9. Mary, b. ca. 1825
  10. Isaac, b. ca. 1827, d. fall 1849.
  11. Harris Soper, b. 7 Aug. 1832
  12. Horace, d. fall 1849.

4. John GREENO, b. 18 Aug. 1781, Rutland, (Daniel) he was in Batavia, Genesee Co., NY when he was appointed a guardian of his brother Emerson in 11 Jan. 1808. He received $107.62 from his father's estate, as recorded in a partial account of the administration dated the fourth Monday of Jul. 1808, while Emerson's equal share was paid to his guardians (brothers Moses and John). John married about this time, and by 1810 had three children. In 1815, he bought land in Bethany, Genesee Co., selling a portion of the plot shortly thereafter. This is the last that has been found of him, but in 1831, his heirs, consisting of widow Mary/Polly Greeno and several children sell the remainder. Polly was in Batavia in 1840, but by 1850 had moved with son John R. to Connewango Twp., Cattaraugus Co., NY.

Children of John GREENO:

  1. dau., name unknown, b. bef. 1810, and apparently d. young, not being involved in the 1831 sale.

  4. Presina, b. ca. 1812, m. Orange LITCHFIELD

5. Oliver GREENO, b. 17 Aug. 1783, (Daniel) he was in Catherine, then Tioga (now Chemung) Co., NY by 22 Oct. 1809 when he was appointed one of the guardians for his sister Polly. He had already had his oldest son, David, born in 1805 prior to his marriage. He is first wife, who he married 23 Aug. 1809, was Polly COE, daughter of David and Sarah (SQUIRE) COE. She was b. 23 Aug. 1781, and d. 7 Jan. 1823, being buried in Parsons Cem., Veteran Twp., and he remarried Olive (HOPPER) BENTLEY, widow of Green BENTLEY, b. ca. 1783, NY. She was still living in 1855, but on 5 Nov. 1863, he married his third wife, Ann MALLETT. In 1839, he appears in Leroy Twp., Bradford Co., Pa., selling to his brother Samuel the next year. He was an early member of the Millport Methodist Church. He died 17 Oct. 1867, Millport, NY, being buried at Horseheads, NY. His widow was still living in Millport in 1880.

He appears to have spent time with brothers John and Oliver, as his wife was sister of Oliver's, while in 1810, he and his wife were living next to John in Genesee Co., NY. He married Anna COE, it would seem b. 8 Jun. 1793, Fairfield, Conn., daughter of David and Sarah (SQUIRE) COE. He fought in the War of 1812, but later returned to Rutland and was there with his wife and four children in 1820. In 1827, he left Vermont for Millport, Chemung Co., NY, and he can be found in Veteran Twp. in 1830. In 1834, he appears in the tax records of Columbia Twp., Bradford Co., Pa, then starting the next year in neighboring Canton Twp. He continues to appear in the Canton tax records and censuses through 1863, over a year following his death, which occurred 11 Jan. 1861. In 1864 his land in Canton appears in the tax records as having been transferred to his son-in-law Darwin SPALDING.

Polly is said by Myra Bass to have d. 7 Jan. 1823, but this conflicts with the birthdates of her supposed children, and her probable appearance in the 1850 census. This probably instead is the death date of daughter Mary, for whom no spouse is given. Mary, wife of David Coe, died 9 Sep 1856, aged 63 years, 2 months and 4 days, and was buried at Parsons Cem., Veteran Twp, Chemung Co., Pa. David lived to 1 Dec. 1865, being buried with his wife.

(11.) In addition, there are several GREENOs in the next generation who cannot be assigned to a particular son of Daniel. We would appear to have complete accounts of Daniel, Leonard, and Amasa, while we know the surviving children of Oliver and Emerson. Most likely placement is with Moses, but perhaps one or more could be Samuel's.
