James Shaw family
PERSON EVENT DETAIL
**S - Shaw, James - MINE - Is my James from the Barren Co KY Shaw family? It is possible: in that Barren Co family, there was a James who was in Sumner Co, TN ca 1811 or more, and brothers of that James who ended up in Christian Co, KY. Sumner is a plausible location for my James. Sumner Co James had no property. The Barren Co family traces back to Woodford Co, KY, and in Woodford, there is a Kitty Shaw, so the names repeat. But there is NO proof, to date, to connect my James to Barren County.

I wonder if my James was a circuit rider kind of minister? It would explain his having money and education but no property and not being taxed and being away from home for long stretches and having died young. If so, he might well be the James Shaw of Knox Co, IN, then Edwards Co, IL, because this person was a minister and was refered to as Esq.

Mar 21, 1979. Mrs. John F. Mason, 109 S. Jessup, Hopkinsville, KY 42240, said she searched wills, estate settlements, guardian books, survey books, and deeds for James and Polly Shaw and found no mention of then. She says that Polly signed for the marriage of her daughter Maria, so James would have been dead or out of the county. She says that she knows that Polly was in the 1820 Christian Co census, but neither she nor James owned land there. Polly might have lived on some other Shaw's land, or she had kin in Christian Co.

War of 1812, KY - nil found for James Shaw. No pension, no bounty land, no military record.

**S - Shaw, James - MINE 1813 - Christian Co, KY - tax list No land. 1 WM>21 1 horse
**S - Shaw, James - MINE 1818 - marriage of Maria Shaw Mina Shaw m. Cornelius Cannon, dau Polly, Feb 9, 1818.
Source: Christian Co Marriage Records, 1795-1825.

This suggests that James was dead (or absent for some other reason) by 1818.
Mina was a misreading of Maria.

This may or may not be the daughter of my James. But, unless there are 3 Christian Co James Shaws at this time, this refers to my James Shaw.
**S - Shaw, James - MINE 1820, Nov - Christian Co, KY - dead On motion of James H. McLaughlin, it is ordered that he be appointed guardian for Lavisa Shaw, Lewisa Shaw, Delila Shaw, Kitty Shaw, and Finly Shaw, heirs and infants of James Shaw, deceased. Whereupon the said McLaughlin, together with John P. Campbell, his security, entered into and acknowledged bond in the penalty of $2000, conditioned according to law.
Christian Co Kentucky Order Book F, pages 111-112, November 6, 1820 Court.

$2000 bond suggests a large estate. No further records in Christian Co?

Note - the minor kids, judging from the unusual first names, really do seem to be subsequent Wayne Co, IL Shaws.
**S(w) - Shaw, Polly (Christian Co, KY) - Assuming this is the person who witnessed the marriage of Maria Shaw to Cornelius Cannon, and because this person is a generation too old to be the wife of James son of William d. 1814, then this is the wife of my James. But dead is dead and her husband died by 1820 - and actually, probably by 1818 or else Polly would not have been standing up for her daughter in 1818, or have been the head of household in the 1820 Christian Co census.

She is not in the 1830 Christian Co census.
**S(w) - Shaw, Polly (Christian Co, KY) 1820 census Page 42: 1 WM<10, 1 WF<10, 2 WF10-16, 1 WF26-45
But she is not in any Christian Co tax list

**Saa - Shaw, Maria 1818 - marriage of Maria Shaw Mina Shaw m. Cornelius Cannon, dau Polly, Feb 9, 1818.

This suggests that James was dead (or absent for some other reason) by 1818.
Mina was a misreading of Maria.

This may or may not be the daughter of my James. But, unless there are 3 Christian Co James Shaws at this time, this refers to my James Shaw.

This implies he is part of the family I'm looking for.

Finley Shaw, age 77, farmer, died May, 1880. Finley was b. KY and both of his parents were b. KY.

Ill Archives, however, says this record says he was age 67 and that he died of consumption.
Shaw, James (Bedford Co, TN) - 1828 - in Bedford Co, TN; 1840 list, age 69 years, Marshall Co. Served in the War of 1812 in the Mts Gunmen Regt. Source: Soldiers of the War of 1812 Buried in Tennessee.
1850 Marshall census: b. ca 1771 in Maryland, wife Mary age 68 b. VA.

The problem here is that he was in Bedford Co, TN whereas my Shaws were then in Wayne Co, IL.
Shaw, James (Christian Co, KY) son of Wm d 1814 Christian Co - I am assuming this is the same person as the other James Shaw in Wayne Co because both had wives named Polly. Note that both James Shaw's lived very near each other in Christian Co (same neighbors). This suggests that my James Shaw was related to the more prominent Christian Co Shaws (who were from NC) or that there were 3 James Shaw's. If 2, then this James Shaw was back and forth between Wayne Co IL and Christian Co, KY.

Also, notice the Harlen/Harlan surname in 2 different entries for this person.

The James who was the father of Maria Shaw Cannon is not the James b. 1793, son of William (d. 1814) because James b. 1793 was too young to be Maria's father.
Shaw, James (Christian Co, KY) son of Wm d 1814 Christian Co 1817, June - Christian Co KY surveyor Christian Co Order Book C p. 212:
Ordered that James Shaw be and he is hereby appointed surveyor of the road leading from Hopkinsville to Butler Courthouse, commencing at Mathew Raney's and continuing to the Creek at John Fruit's, in the place of William Morrow resigned, with allotment of hands filed.

Ref: Christian County, Kentucky, Court Order Book "C", 1814-1819, by Samuel Taylor Killebrew, Simmons Historical Publications, Melber, KY, 1999, p. 141.

If the list of hands could be found, those would have beem James Shaw's neighbors. Second best, the notes below on this road -
1814, p. 23. Same road. Timothy Dunavin was appointed surveyor. The road started at Logan Road. Mathew Raney had been the surveyor. Same hands.
March, 1817. p. 126. Timothy Dunavin appointed surveyor of this road, in place of Daniel Bright. Same hands.
p. 24. William Stuart, Mathew Raney, William Morrow, David Quait, are appointed to view and alter the Highland Lick Road, to leave the old road on the NW side of Samuel Pyle's house and intersect the same at the old Berry's lick road.
Of these names, only William Morrow is found in the 1810 KY census (Logan Co), and there is a William Stuart in Mason, Casey, and Barren Counties, and Daniel Bright is in Christian Co. So few of the above names are found in the 1810 KY census, that it is likely that James Shaw and his neighbors were elsewhere than KY in 1810.

Notice that this James Shaw was a surveyor in Christian Co. But my James Shaw owned no land in Christian Co that I can find, which suggests that the surveyor was not my James Shaw.
Shaw, James (Christian Co, KY) son of Wm d 1814 Christian Co 1818 - marriage of Maria Shaw Mina Shaw m. Cornelius Cannon, dau Polly, Feb 9, 1818.
Source: Christian Co Marriage Records, 1795-1825.

This suggests that James was dead (or absent for some other reason) by 1818 or that this is a different James Shaw.
Mina was a misreading of Maria.
Shaw, James (Christian Co, KY) son of Wm d 1814 Christian Co 1820, June - Christian Co KY - resigned as surveyor Page 93 of Order Book F: Ordered that John Lindley be appointed surveyor of that part of the road leading from Hopkinsville to Butler Courthouse, commencing at Mathew Ramey's (should be Raney) and continuing to the Creek at John Fristoe's, in the place of James Shaw resigned.

Shaw, James (St. Clair Co, IL) 1782-1790 - hatter A hatter, Kaskaskia, St. Clair Co, IL 1782-1790 or 1779. Cumberland River, TN in 1780.

Mr. James Shaw was a trustee at the signing of the Cumberland Compact in 1780 at the French Lick (Davidson Co)
Shaw, James (St. Clair Co, IL) 1830 - St. Clair Census 0112001--111001
ie, James Shaw age 40-50 (b. 1780-1790)
wife is age 30-40.
Shaw, James (Warren Co, KY) - Could the James Shaw who married Polly Long in 1803 be the "Jos. Shaw" of the 1810 Warren Co census??
Shaw, James (Warren Co, KY) 1803 - married Polly Long
Shaw, James (Wayne Co, IL) - Is this same person as the James Shaw in Christian Co with wife named Polly and daughter Maria? No because Christian Co James Shaw died 1818-1820, and dead is dead, and a dead James Shaw would not be the head of a Wayne Co, IL census in 1820.

Judging from his Wayne Co 1820 census, this James Shaw had kids b. about 1810, 1812, 1814, 1816, 1818, and 1820, so was probably born about 1785, so he is too old to be a son of my James and is too old to be the James Shaw b. 1793, son of William d. 1814 Christian Co. Judging from the Shiloh Church records, this James Shaw was a Baptist, with wife Polly (a coincidence - Polly was a common name - not the same Polly as my James' wife).

Being that Wayne Co James Shaw has ties to both Sally Harlan (George Harlan was guardian of Sarah Vance Harlan - see Christian Co Order Book F p. 354, Feb 1825 Court), and the George Harlan has ties to the William Shaw d. 1814 family of Christian Co, it may be that this James Shaw is part of the William Shaw d. 1814 family of Christian Co.
