1. John Franklin Jones ,¹ son of Elijah Jones and Elizabeth ? , was born on February 20, 1837 in Perry County, Missouri, died on September 14, 1903 in Cottonwood, Coal County, Oklahoma, at age 66, and was buried on September 15, 1903 in Lehigh Cemetery, Coal County, Oklahoma.

General Notes: John F. Jones and Sarah left Illinois about 1870 and headed west they went to Kansas and then onto Texas they traveled in a covered wagon. John worked for the Railroad as a Buffalo hunter providing meat for the workers, His nephew still has his rifle a 45 70 Sharps Rifle Hexagon Barrel. this story was told to me by J.D. Smith a grandson of Pearl Wheeler.

John F. Jones entered the service at Hillsboro, Ill. on the 3rd day of March 1865 as a private in company F in the 47 Regiment Illinois Infantry, he was discharged at Demoplis, Alabama on the 21st day of January 1866. This information is also on his Tombstone. We also have all of his Military Pension Records.

The information on the Jones family came from Edith [Wheeler] Smith and family names and information came from the family bible and news paper clippings,Coal County Genealogy Soceity, Various census records, visiting cemeterys, Lots of phone calls and a lot of new found relatives.

Johns burial is listed in the OHS "Civil War Union Soldiers burried in Oklahoma" by Dale Talkington and Deone K Pearcy.

It has come to my attention that John F. Jones name was Johnathan Franklin Jones. this information was given to me by Carolyn Cameron who got this information from Opal Jones who was the daughter of Oliver Pervis Jones son of John F. Jones. we have no records to prove any of this.

In the death of Mrs Sarah E. Jones, in her 83rd year, Saturday at the home of Mrs W.H. Wheeler. There passed away a mother of Israel, four score and three years of age, A pioneer, who lived untill that day when 97 relatives might attend her funeral, A member of the Methodist church since 13 years of age and a devoted christain during all these years. Mrs Jones was born in Irving Ill. in the year of 1841, on September 8, 1859 was united in marriage to John F. Jones, to this union there were born five sons and six daughters, thoes left to mourn her loss, Mrs w.h. wheeler, Coalgate, Mrs Joe Carthcart, Coalgate, Mrs Ida Fite, Strafford, Mrs Bell Johnson, Ft. Cobb, and Mr H. S. Jones route 2, Coalgate and a host of other relatives and friends who attended the funeral. Mrs Jones was stricken with paralysis and died Saturday at 7:15 o'clock, funeral services were conducted at the home of W.H. Wheeler Sunday by Rev. f.s. Ross. pastor of the First Baptist church in Coalgate, C.T. Towery leading the song service,

Slater funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was at Lehigh cemetery beside her husband John F. Jones

H.S. (DUB) JONES SERVICES IS HELD
Funeral services for H.S. (Dub) Jones, 93 years 10 months and 3 days of age, were held at the First Baptist Church in Coalgate at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Rev. J.H. Bradley, pastor conducted the services. Born in Hillsboro, Illinois on Dec 22, 1863, H.S. Jones came to Coalgate in 1899 and has made his home in Phillips since that time, An early day miner, later farmed untill his retirement, and has enjoyed good health untill eight months ago when he suffered a broken hip in a fall at the home. He died at a rest home in Atoka at 11:30 Friday morning. Surviving are his wife Mrs H.S. (Nellie) Jones of Phillips, one daughter Mrs Tom Belease of Coalgate, two sons A.B. Jones of Tulsa and Mart Jones of Oklahoma City, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren (NOTE: this is the way it was in the paper, but most likely should have said 7 Great Great grandchildren) and one sister Mrs Pearl Wheeler of Coalgate. Pall Bearers were Joe Leone, Robert Johnson, Tom Ruffini, J.B. Forneris, Judge W.B. Thornsbourogh, and Johnny Flain. Burial was at Lehigh cemetery with Slater funeral home directing.

Herbert married Ann Elizabeth Brinlee , daughter of Richard Mason Brinlee and Sarah Ellen Pettit , on August 29, 1882 in Grandbury, Hood County, Texas. Ann was born in January 1867 in Clark County, Indiana and died about 1886 in Hood County, Texas, about age 19. Another name for Ann was Adaline.

Herbert next married Adaline Elizabeth Duncan about 1890. Adaline was born in January 1863 in Tennessee, died on May 16, 1942 in Eastern State Hospital, Vinita, Oklahoma, at age 79, and was buried in Vinita, Oklahoma, Hospital Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson (Bill) and his wife Belle came from Roff, I. T. in 1900 to a farm one and one-half miles northeast of Cobb (later owned by Walter Volz), then owned by Dr. Jacob Sturm. They and his brother, Jim, came with five covered wagons with all their furniture, and trailing wheeled implements, and 10 hens and 2 roosters and about 100 horses, They arrived in November after three weeks of rain and snow over 125 miles of trails. They rented the farm and bought 3 stacks of hay and a stalk field. After unloading, the men returned to Roff to bring about 180 head of cattle and Jim Johnson's possessions. The Bill Johnsons bought the claim right from a Mr. Fred Branson of Alfalfa, which was located on Cobb Creek two miles west of present Highland Methodist Church or I mile east and one mile south of Swan Lake, NW-32.9-12.

He built a half-dugout with logs forming the part above ground level, in which they lived for some time. The children attended Pioneer School which was on their place. The school pump is just across the road south of the present Crow Roost resort. The family cut logs on the farm and had them sawed into lumber at a saw mill up the creek near Swan Lake. They built a two-story house of six rooms, a barn and other small buildings. Bill and Belle lived on the farm until their deaths. Maggie Johnson McPherson (Anadarko) says about the only white people in this area in 1900 were Doc Sturm, Mr. and Mrs. Lon Clary and his parents.

She says the first few years there was no organized law enforcement, and murders and rustling were fairly common. Cattle Rustlers. On one occasion some cattle rustlers were caught in the Swan Lake area and hanged, then and there, by some officers who rode off and left them. Dave and Nellie Laura Huguley were married in 1928 and farmed in the Pioneer and Highland area until moving to Fort Cobb about 1958. Their children are Ralph, Ft. Cobb; Verda Pearl Reed, Gulf Port, Miss; Louie, Hughesville, Mossouri; Leroy, Altus, Okla.; and Linda Kay Butler. Vine Grove, Kentucky. Dave died about the first of 1966, and Nellie lives in Ft. Cobb.

Mrs. Joe Cathcart claimed by death. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Joe Cathcart in the home at Cottonwood, at 11: o'clock Tuesday morning with the Rev. Harry. Miller pastor of the Presbyterian Church conducting. Mrs. Catheart died at her home here Sunday night at the age of 83 after a lingering illness of about two years, She was born in I11. on Dec. 26 1867. She had lived in Coal County since 1900, eight children were born to her first marriage to James Robert Glasco and sometime after his death she married Joe Catheart pioneer miner of Cottonwood. She and Mr. Catheart lived at the present home in Cottonwood for 37 years, she was active in the church of the Nazarene for many years. Survivors include her husband, four daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Citron Coalgate, Mrs. I. G. Berry and Mrs. Addle Farrell of Tulsa and Mrs. Henry Story of Houston TX., A son Paul Glasco ofAtoka. 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. A brother Dub Jones of Phillips and a sister Mrs. Pearl Wheeler of Coalgate also survive. Burial was in the Coalgate cemetery. ³

Funeral services for Joe Cathcart of Cottonwood were held at his home, Monday afternoon with Rev. Harry Miller conducting. Mr. Cathcart was born May 2, 1869, in Bostonia, Texas, where he attended schools and was married, In 1902 he moved to Cottonwood, where he worked in the coal mines; and has lived for 50 years. For the past 40 years he has lived in the same home following the death.of his first, wife he was .married sometime later to Mrs. James Robert Glasco who preceded him in death in September, 1951. He died at the home Sunday after a lingering illness; and is survived by one son, Frank Cathcart of Ft. Worth, Texas; daughter, Mrs. Willie Rosebaum, Bakersfield, Calif.; three half, Sisters, and eight step-children. Burial was at Coalgate cemtery.

General Notes: As a boy we remember her telling me when she was 2 yrs. old they moved to Kansas and then on to Texas. in a Covered Wagon. where she married Aaron Woolsey Solomon, they later moved to Vanoss, Oklahoma.
At this point we are not sure if they were married in Texas or Oklahoma. Think they were married Abt 1885 - 1886. This information is based on the death of his first wife. and the birth of his first child with Ida
L. Jones.

Mrs Ida Flte passed away Saturday night, January 29, at the home of her drughter, Mrs Fred Citron at the age of 81. Her home was at Vanoss. but due to her age she has been living here since September of last year. She leaves to mourn her death two daughters. Mrs Edith Roundtree of Cortez, Colo. and Mrs. Fred Citron of Coalgate; and six sons, Carl Solomon, of Vanoss, Dave Solomon of Forster, Okla. Bud Solomon of Oklahoma City, Mark Solomon of Hayden, Ariz. J. D. Solomon of Hobbs, New Mexico. J. P. Solomon of Roswell, New. Mexico. All were able to attend the funeral except one daughter, Mrs. Edtth Roundtree. Also one brother Dub Jones brother of Phillips, Okla., and three sistera, Mrs, Joe Catheart of Cottonwood, and a twin sister. Mrs. Pearl Wheeler Of Cottonwood and Mrs Bell Johnson of Fort Cobb, Okla.

Ida married Aaron Woolsey Solomon , son of Moses N. Solomon and Nancy Woolsey , about 1885 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma / Or Texas. Aaron was born on November 23, 1854 in Fentress County, Tennessee, died on January 6, 1920 in Vanoss, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, at age 65, and was buried on January 7, 1920 in Lightning Ridge Cemetery.

Elder Solomon passed away at his home south of town after a ten day's illiness of pneumonia. He was a pioneer of the indian territory .. and spent many of his younger days as a cowboy. After being converted to the christian faith he was united with the Free Will Baptist church and became a minister of the gospel, His life was one of love and service and he leaves many friends and relatives to mourn his departure.

Death call Mrs Lucy Sutton after illness of three weeks duration Mrs Lucy (Jones) aged 62 years, five months and 22 days passed away at the farm home near Lone StarMonday at 10.00 a.m. Mrs Sutton was born in the state of Kansas Feburary 14, 1871 coming to the Coalgate community in 1925 about eight years ago. She united in marriage to George J. Sutton March 29, 1889, Her husband is left to mourn her death and seven children , as follows: G.T. Sutton route 2, City, Jesse Sutton, Axel, Colo. Mrs Pearl Vetzel, Meeker Colo, Mrs Belle Jourden, St. Louis, Oklahoma. Mrs Ethel Briscoe, Mrs Alice Lee and Mrs Lucy Hatmaker, Finley Oklahoma; Mrs Edna Neal Rt. 3 City; Mrs Alpha Estes, Rt. 1 City, Her mother Mrs Sarah E. Jones of Cottonwood, one brother and four sisters, 34 grand children and four great grand children. besides a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the home near Lone Star by Rev. L. F. Hazelwood and interment was made in the Lehigh Cemetery.

Lucille married George Judson Sutton , son of Jessie Sutton and Lycia Ann Robertson , on March 29, 1889. George was born on August 26, 1856 in Lawrence County, Mississippi and died on October 23, 1940, at age 84.

General Notes: George Sutton supported the former slave woman who had raised him. their are stories that George build his own coffin and kept it in the barn. Don't know if this was common practice in the early days.

Kirk Jones died at his home in Phillips Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. after a long illness of cancer of the stomach. Mr Jones is survived by his widow and 6 children.

FARMER IS KILLED IN ROAD ACCIDENT.
Almost Blind, He steps Out Onto Road in Path of Moving Auto.

Jim Jones, 54 of Schulter, blind in one eye and only partial vision in the other, stepped out of a small grocery store with a package of salt under his arm into the path of a moving automobile on highway 75 and substained fatal injuries at 4:15 p.m. yesterday.
Mr. Jones had cataracts in both eyes and had to give up his occupation as a miner about four years ago because of failing eye site. Since then he has been a farmer.
Dwight Henry a mail carrier of Morris was the driver of the car that struck. Mr Jones and he reported immediately to the sheriff's office here to give his version of the accident . One of Mr. Henry's eyes was cut by a piece of glass in the accident and he visited a doctor while here: He was accompained by by Miss Alyne Keesee of Okmulgee who suffered a shock as the result of the accident.
Mr Jones was brought to the Okmulgee hospital by a davis ambulance and he died within 45 minutes after his arrival. His condition was so critical that the surgeons would not remove him from his room to the operating room. He substaned a severe fracture at the base of the skull and never regained consciousness.
Deputy Sheriff Erie Upton investigated the case and he said it appeared to be an unavoidable accident.
The store is on the east side of the main highway through Schulter and Mr Jones home is in the west part of Schulter.
Mr Jones is survived by his widow and one son Raymond Jones of Schulter.

Henryetta Jan. 2, Funeral services for James R. Jones, 54, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of the Buchanan Funeral Home with Rev. W.D. Bryant of Bald Hill officiating.
Burial will be made in West Lawn cemetery.
Mr. Jones died soon after reaching Okmulgee late Thursday after he had been hit by an automobile driven by Dwight Henry. Mail carrier of Morris at Schulter.
He is survived by his wife and one son Raymond Jones, and his mother Mrs Elizabeth Jones of Coalgate.

Jones, gasman at McAlester-Edwards Coal Company's No. 2 mine, sustained severe burns about the head and body, early Wednesday morning while......west entry in the engine room of the electric hoist. One of the drops had been left open causing the air to change ..........the gas, resulting his getting dangerously burned. The explosion blew a car off the trip and it also exploded with such force that the unfortunate man was thrown out of the room onto the slope. He was brought to the top and medical aid summond. He was rushed to the All Saints hospital at McAlester, for treatment. Mr. Jones is an old resident of Pittsburg, have been in the employ of the McAlester-Edwards Coal company for several years, and is an
experienced miner.

In writing his name Presley the P looked like a R. When he was discharged he tried to change it back to Presley but the paymaster asked him if if really mattered, Pet told him that it didn't so it became Rusley from then on, this is what is on his tombstone.

Uncle Pet was in the Navy during World War 1, the ship that he was on was sank by the Germans, There used to be a picture of him and others hanging on the side of the ship till they were rescued. we remember this as a boy. and him telling me about it. As a young boy we used to pick at him till we got his goat and he would catch me and pull my britches off and not give them back to me.

JAMES R. SOLOMON SULPHUR- Services for James R. Solomon. 87. were held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Lightning Ridge Church. He died Saturday in a Sulphur hospital. The, Rev. A. L. McAffrey officiated at the service which was under the direction of Clagg Funeral Home. Burial was in the Lightning Ridge Cemetery
Mr Solomon was born. Oct. 13, 1892 in Fannin County, Texas. He came to Sulphur 8 years ago from Roswell N.M. A retired barber. he was a veteran of World War 1.
Survivors include two daughters Mrs Theda Dawson and Mrs Grace Smock both of Sulphur; two sons Chester, Sulphur, and Max, Hardy Ark; two brothers Deb, Ada. and Mark, Hobbs N.M. nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Ms. Mowdy was bom August 23, 1902 in Atwood, OK to Joel and Lela Sara Jones Carlton and passed away October 12, 1994 at Mary Hurley Hospital in Coalgate at the age of 92. She married
Clyde Mowdy on September 15, 1923 in Oklahoma City. He preceded her in death on March 10, 1975. Ms. Mowdy was head of school lunch programs in Coal and Atoka Counties and worked for
Hudson's Big Country Store. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Chimney Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the
American revolution, and was recently honored as a 50-year
member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include one son, Robert F. Mowdy of Coalgate; one brother, James "Bud" Belase of Carnegie, OK; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son,
Norman, two sisters and two brothers. Pallbearers were A. D. "Son" Cody, Steve Cody, Jim Clemens,
Leon Jackson, Carl McEntire, and Tony Corsini. Honorary
pallbearers were Johnnie Walkup, Glen Haney, David Mask,

Mr. Solomon died Monday in Columbia. He was born Dec. 1, 1918, at Vanoss, to Carl and Delia Solomon, and lived in Oklahoma. City for 30 years. He had lived in Shawnee from 1172 to. 1985, when he rnoved to Columbia. Mr. Solomon was owner and operator of A&A Lock Shop, Inc., while living in Oklahoma City. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City and St. John,s Lutheran Church in Shawnee. He was a coach for many years for YMCA and was a leader in the Boy Scouts of America. Leonard Aubrey 'King Sol' Solomon was welcomed into heaven by his Lord January 27, 2003.

He was born July 27, 1921 to Carl and Delia Solomon at Vanoss, OK. Growing up on a farm in Pontotoc County with six brothers and three sisters, he developed a lifelong love for playing and later coaching baseball, practical jokes, politics, gospel singing, public speaking, writing, and helping others, particularly young people, to find a job or feed a family.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Corps in New Guinea and The Philippines.

He graduated from Oklahoma A&M in 1948 and for the next 13 years served as an Agricultural xtension Agent in Frederick and Altus, where he enjoyed helping youngsters involved in 4-H clubs. In 1961 he became asst. director and later executive director of the Oklahoma Conservation Commission, the state agency charged with helping flood control and soil erosion, and romoting land-friendly agricultural practices.

Before retiring in 1985, he wrote a book on soil and water conservation in Oklahoma and frequently spoke nationally about Oklahoma's outstanding upstream flood control program. He later served six years as chairman of the Oklahoma Mining Commission, and then as state coordinator for Oklahoma's Eldercare Committee.

He touched many lives and will be remembered for his encouraging spirit, faithful devotion to his church and doing what's right, and unyielding love of family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Carolyn; two sons, Carl & wife Carol of Edmond, OK, and Larry & wife Diane of San Antonio, TX; two daughters, Linda Schilt & husband John of Muskogee, OK and Cynthia Solomon of Coppell, TX; one brother, Raybert of Enid, OK; two sisters, Marjorie Blansett of Morris, OK and Carletta Keith of Houston,TX; and 11 grandchildren, Julie Elgin & husband Eric, Lisa and Amanda Schilt, Amy and Lindsay Schultz, Emily Solomon, Windy Wallace, Zane Solomon, and Sarah, Rachel and Stephen Solomon.

His life will be celebrated at a memorial service set for 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 31, 2003 at Waterloo Road Baptist Church in Edmond, under the direction of Hahn-Cook/ Street & Draper Funeral Directors.

Burial will be 3:00 p.m. at Lightning Ridge Cemetery.

Wayne Solomon

• TISHOMINGO -- Services for Wayne Solomon, 59, Chief of Police for the City of Tishomingo, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2002, at the First Assembly of God Church with Mary Ewing, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Tishomingo Cemetery under the direction of Clark Funeral Home.
Wayne was born March 31, 1943, in Hobbs, N.M. to Eldred and Leona Bass Solomon. He died Monday, April 8, 2002, in Tishomingo.

He graduated from high school in Shidler, Okla., and married Mildred George on Dec. 30, 1963, in Muskogee. Wayne worked for A.M.F. Tuboscope in the oil fields a few years and then attended East Central University in Ada, graduating with his degree in criminal justice.

In 1993, he and Mildred moved to Tishomingo where he worked in security at Murray State College before he joined the Tishomingo Police Department in 1997 in the position of chief. As a member of Tishomingo Lions Club he was currently serving as president. He organized the Johnston County Salvation Army and was involved in many other civic activities.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Mildred, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Dee Solomon of Norman, and Jay and Charla Solomon of Blanchard; a daughter and son-in-law, Julayna and David Meyer of St. Louis.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Carla and Dave Stockman of Covington, Ky.; and Cherry and Bob Crawford of Midland, Texas; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Kelsey and Kensey. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Trevor.

Bearers will be Tyler Solomon, Shannon Smith, Steve Bowman, Brian Anderson, Joey Sparlin, Rick Clayton and Mandy Johnson. Honorary bearers are Ernest Jemison, Kenneth Davenport, Ronald Roberts, Dwain Teel and Paul Thomas.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, the Johnston County Salvation Army, Tishomingo Lions Club or Johnston County Library.

Tishomingo police chief dies

TISHOMINGO -- Tishomingo Police Chief Wayne Solomon died Monday while on duty in his office. His death was attributed to a heart attack.
City officials said Solomon was stricken sometime between 3:45 and 4:30 p.m. when he was found. He was alone in the police station office during this time.
Solomon worked several years in the security and law-enforcement field before accepting a security position with Murray State College. He was appointed as city police chief about five years ago.
Funeral services are pending with Clark Funeral Service.
