Leo
Egan, son of Dan and Lizzie Egan, was born at Hyannis,
Nebraska, 12 April 1906. He was a graduate of Hyannis
High School in 1925, and continued on to attend Creighton
College and the University of Nebraska.
In
1927, Leo married Carrie Nielsen of Rolfe, Iowa. Leo
took his bride to a ranch in southwest Cherry
County, north of Ashby, Nebraska. Their first
home was a sod house, and it was not until a few years
later that they built a more modern home.
Leo,
like his father, became a master cattleman and went
on to present show cattle winning Grand Championships
at Alliance, Omaha, Denver, and the American
Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City, Kansas.
The Egan cattle set the world's record in 1951 at Denver,
Colorado for heifer calves at $71.50; then upped that
ante when they set the world's record price of $92.25
for steer calves.
Leo's
wife, Carrie, was an excellent horsewoman and raised
and traded American
Saddle Horses.
Leo
and Carrie had two sons:
Daniel
