Senior Class picnic day before graduation day.

Graduation Day was May 27.

Interesting she got scholarships. Reading on, it seems the problem with going to college was the cost of housing and living. Note a Grinnell rep. there.

I have five gifts from people to whom I didn't send invitations.

Really enjoyed being home today. Just did as I wanted to! Cooley criticized by speeches. Leo at Keister's again. Louetta made curls in back of my hair. Gave my speech in Baccalaureate dress. “Finish What You Attempt.” Afterwards Gertrude had a flat tire at school house. Afterwards we had quart of ice cream down here.

Tuesday, May 26

Pretty tired. Got Margy and we ordered groceries for picnic. Left at 2:00. I took V-8. Yippy drove. Weiners – buns, ice cream. Played tennis & went walking. Ate at shelter hourse. Home about 9:30. I had car afterwards. Fritz had a party but I didn't go. Rode around with myself ‘till 10:00. Fred and Jessie gave me handkerchiefs. Folks to Bank Nite.

Wednesday, May 27

Busy taking picnic stuff back all day. Had red bows put on my shoes. Had my hair fixed again. Grandma sick. Walked in with Happy again 2nd. Red roses. I was valedictorian, got $5, typing pin and scholarships. Afterwards about wore out shaking hands. Surely was thrilled. Met Dr. Steiner of Grinnell. Ger's & Lil's down here afterwards. Dad got a gallon of ice cream.

“Memories of past & hope for the future” – difference in generations. [Graduation speech, it appears]

Saturday, May 30

Cleaned the house. Fixed my hair. Helen Patrick here awhile. With Ruth in pm. Couldn't have the car. At nite wore white dress and clerked at Garst's at nite. Worked ‘till 12:00. Really about dead. Should have called Wallace!!

Sunday, May 31

Folks at Carroll. I had to get stuff ready for picnic at No. 2. All the Kinnicks & Williams were there. Blue dress. Home with Lyle & Ila to go to Baccalaurieate. To Snyder's & then in to Glidden to call Wallace. Tho't I'd have a grand time – was so happy! and then the 1st thing he told me was that we'd better “quit.” Surely hurt about it. Couldn't keep from crying. Washed & went upstairs. Can't get over it. How could he do it?

Wallace

In her handwriting:
