Robert Ellis was born in 1794 in a small village called Pickering in the North of Yorkshire, England. There were three "ridings" to Yorkshire in those days, North, West, and South.

Robert Ellis was the son of Robert Ellis and Hannah Coulson. Robert (Sr.) was born in 1770. The place of his birth is unknown, but Hannah was born in 1771 at Lastingham, Yorkshire, England. Robert, Sr. and Hannah were married at Rillington-cum-Scampston, in North Yorkshire, England, 20 Feb. 1791. There the following children were born.

Two of Robert and Hannah's children immigrated to America. William and Robert, Jr. It's unknown when William arrived but Robert, according to family history, is said to have come in 1830. Robert, Jr. was found in the 1830 & 1840 census' of Camillus, Onondaga County, New York.
