Transcribers notes: I am including the text as printed in
various editions of the Appalachian Quarterly. The articles contain a wealth of information about the history of primarily Lee County but have many references to the surrounding areas. They cover most every aspect of history; people, routes, important dates, commercial entities and industries.
I believe the articles were
originally first written circa 1950, as there is a reference to that year and
all data is prior to that year. Even though the articles are some 50 years old,
it provides a wonderful history of the area. All references to "Niggerhead Rock" are of the name of the rock formation as it was called in the time period of the articles' writing. The formation is known as Old Stoneface Rock today.
Permission granted to post these articles on this site was graciously granted by Ms.Rhonda Robertson, Editor of the Appalachian Quarterly and by the Wise County Historical Society.
