Deep Creek Cemetery

    Deep Creek Cemetery is located between Boyd and Decatur.
    From Decatur go south on Hwy 287 and turn right on CR 4227. The cemetery is about 5 miles (past Deep Creek) on the right.
    From Hwy 114 in Aurora go north about 4 miles on CR 4227 to the cemetery on the left.
    There is a black pipe fence and gate at the road. This gate is kept locked because of the vandalism that has taken place at the cemetery. You can get a key from Coker Funeral Home or from the Wise County Heritage Museum in Decatur.
    The cemetery is about a half of a mile from the road. There’s another gate and a Historical Marker at the entrance.
    The sign over the entry gate has the date 1860. This cemetery was established by the first settlers to the area and is one of the oldest in the county.

Deep Creek Community

Named for the natural landmark nearby. Settled about 1854 by pioneers Sam Woody and Tom McCarroll. Population grew as they were joined by several of Woody’s former neighbors from east Texas.

Along the creek, farmers raised cotton, corn, and cattle. In 1860 Tom McCright and Andrew Mann gave land for a cemetery, and local Baptists constructed a church, which doubled as a schoolhouse.

Testimony to danger of frontier life is the grave of Miss Sally Bowman, who died in 1868. She was shot after a wild chase by Indians who surprised her as she tended her father’s herd of fine horses. At her grave is a monument erected by the neighborhood.

Other early settlers interred here include many veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865.

The community is noted as the boyhood home of Lawrence (J.L.) Ward, respected president of Decatur Baptist College during 1900-1907 and 1910-1950.

In the 20^th century, a nationally known ballet – "Winter at Deep Creek" – has recaptured the flavor of pioneer days. Produced by the American Folk Ballet, the dance was originated and choreographed by Burch Mann, a great-granddaughter of John Mann, one of the first settlers in the community.

One of the headstones in the cemetery is that of Sallie Bowman. The Pioneer History of Wise County by Cliff D. Cates, published 1907, has a description of her "futile but brilliant ride for safety" on March 7, 1868. Part of that story follows:

    "At the close of the war there lived a family by the name of Bowman in a picturesque valley on Deep Creek. Besides being a farmer the head of the house was a physician by profession; he also owned a large bunch of fine horses which, miraculously enough, he had brought safely through the trying period of war. These latter had been consigned to the careful judgment and expert horsemanship of Miss Sallie Bowman, a courageous young daughter about eighteen years of age.
    Fresh tracks later discovered on both sides of a creek, made by her own horse and those of the Indians, indicated that the creek had been the starting point of her pursuit by the Indians. Down the bank towards her dashed the redskins, and she, wild with fright, wheeled and turned her fleet horse’s head in the direction of home. Over the prairies sped the frenzied girl turning now and then to gaze on the rapidly gaining demons whom she know would give no quarter.
    The deplorable climax came within view of the home of a neighbor named Jones. Mrs. Jones stepped into the yard and viewed a scene which froze her to the spot. Three giant, red demons were bearing down upon a defenseless girl fleeing for her life. Two treacherous arms were thrust forward, two gun reports rent the air, and Sallie Bowman reeled in her saddle and rolled to the ground, dead. Two bullets were in her back, fired at such close range as to set fire to her clothing."

    In October 2001 we photographed 408 headstones in the cemetery. There has been quite a bit of vandalism in this isolated cemetery as evidenced by the missing tops of headstones.
   Previous listings of the cemetery were done by Mr. & Mrs. Homer L. Roper and Mr. & Mrs. W. Cletus Johnston, April 11, 1965, and by Homer Hodges in April 2000.
   We compared our list to theirs and were able to add 22 headstones that we did not find. These are indicated in the data with brackets [ ].
