Hall,
George Chester
1922-2006
Graveside military service for George Chester Hall, 84, of Lewisville was March
21 at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas. A memorial service followed at Preston
Hollow United Methodist Church.
Hall died Thursday, March 9, 2006.
Born in 1922 in Decatur to Lee and Daisy Hall, he worked for GTE for more than
35 years. He began as the only telephone man in Carrollton when his family moved
there in 1959, and then became a test board operator.
In 1939, he lied about his age so he could join his brother, Howard, in the
Texas National Guard. He, along with his brother, brother-in-law, and most of
the 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery, became prisoners of war when the Dutch
surrendered the Island of Java to the Japanese in March of 1942. Save for the
year he and a group of prisoners spent lost and starving in the Burmese jungle,
he was in a Japanese prison camp in Java and Burma for 42 months where he and
the rest of his battalion worked to build the now-infamous Burma-Siam Death
Railway.
When he returned to Texas, he was admitted to a military hospital in San Antonio
where he met his sister Grace’s friend, Betty Jean Campbell. They were married
Oct. 26, 1945.
In 1988, a GTE co-worker discovered Hall had never applied for the military
awards and commendations he was eligible to receive. He was presented his awards
in a surprise ceremony at his office July 5 that year. U.S. Rep. Dick Armey,
R-Denton, was there to present the awards that included a Purple Heart and five
Bronze Stars. Surrounded by his family, Hall told the Dallas Morning News that
stubbornness had kept him from going crazy during his horrific years in the war.
He was a lifelong Methodist and liberal labor Democrat, serving as Divisional
Union Steward for CWA for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two sons, Ricky Hall as an infant, and
Robert Hall; and a son-in-law, Stephen Blanton.
He is survived by his daughters, Patti Scott, Rev. Georjean Blanton and husband,
Mike Renquist, and Jannette Hall; 11 grandchildren, Reese and Kristi Cox, Barry
and Cyndi Cox, Mandi and Chris Wilkins, Sonnet Blanton and Alex Wettreich, Calei
Hall and Christopher and Jon Renquist; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hannah
and Madison Wilkins, and Kaitlynn Cox; a brother, Hugh T. Hall; and a
sister-in-law, Christa Hall; and cousin, Johnny H. Hughes and wife, Lula Fern,
of Decatur.
