Service for George A. “Buck” Hagg, Jr., 77, of Decatur was to be Saturday,
April 14, at Greenwood Chapel in Fort Worth. Burial was to follow at Greenwood
Memorial Park.
Hagg died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Fort Worth.
Born Sept. 29, 1923, in River Oaks, he was a resident of Decatur since 1986. He
was an electrician and a member of the local IBEW No. 116 for 59 years.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Ruth Osborn in 1996.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Louise “Cookie” Hagg; a son,
George A. “Andy” Hagg III of Decatur; a daughter, Deborah Morris of
Arlington; four grandchildren, J. and John Morris, both of Arlington, Rebekah
Potter and Ryan Osborn, both of Decatur; a son-in-law, Randy Osborn of Decatur;
a great-grandson, Jacob Potter of Decatur; a sister Betty Bogart of Saratoga,
Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hailey, Lou Esta

Service for Lou Esta Hailey, 98, of Chico was to be Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m.
at Hawkins Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Charles Wallace was to officiate. Burial was
to follow at Chico Cemetery.
Hailey died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, in Bridgeport.
Born March 25, 1903, in Chico, Hailey was a homemaker. She was a member of the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernis Hailey, her stepson Garvin
Hailey and two stepgranddaughters.
She is survived by two nephews, Leonard and Harold Denney; two stepsons, Donald
Hailey and wife Dixie and Lucian Hailey and wife Nell; a stepdaughter, Wanda
Pas-chall; 10 stepgrandchildren, 13 stepgreat grandchildren and one
stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Hale, John Michael

Service for John Michael Hale, 19, of Chico was Monday, Dec. 3, at Laurel Land
Memorial Chapel in Fort Worth. The Rev. Basil Zebrun officiated.
Hale died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in Chico.
Born July 12, 1982, in Fairbanks, Alaska he was a 2001 graduate of Decatur High
School where he was a member of the football team for three years. He was a
member of Vocational Industrial Clubs of America in high school and won medals
in state competitions. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was employed at
USA Quickphone in Alvord. He was a lifelong member of the Orthodox Church in
America and attended St. Barbara’s Orthodox Church in Fort Worth.
Survivors include his father, Gary Wayne Hale of Chico; mother, Sherrie Pitts
Hale of Burleson; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Hale of Waxahachie; grandmother,
Wrenn Pitts of Burleson; aunts, Dorothy Atherton of Newark, Carolyn Edwards of
Crowley and many cousins.

Graveside service for Michael Leroy Hammer, 60, of Bridgeport was Friday, April
13, at East Bridgeport Cemetery. Matthew Hamner officiated.
Pallbearers were Wendell Bunn, Billy Taylor, William Renner, Danny Pemberton,
Don Copeland and Eddie Piercy.
Hamner died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at his home.
Born Oct. 13, 1940, in Edinburg, Ind. he was a truck driver and had lived in
Wise County the past 17 years.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Hamner.
He is survived by two sons, Mitch Hamner and wife Alicia of Bridgeport and Casey
Hamner and wife Donna of Decatur; three brothers, Marvin Hamner of Plano, David
Hamner of Howe and Donald Hamner of Chico; a sister, Judith Hamner of Sylmar,
Calif.; six grandchildren, Justine, Madeline, Christian, Macie, Tony and Shaela
and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hancock died on Dec. 2, 2001, in Denton.
Born on May 12, 1921, he was a retired car salesman.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Hancock; two sons, Phil Hancock and his wife
Bonnie and Mark Hancock and his wife Jeanie, all of Lewisville; one daughter, Jo
Ann Rimpau and husband Jim of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Juanita Dyer of

Born Feb. 5, 1976, he was a truck mechanic.

Harclerode died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, in Newcastle.
Born March 27, 1936, in Putnam, Okla., he was a retired truck driver.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jesse and Shelby Keller; three
sisters, Maxine Bryan, Dixie Jackson and Aileen Allen.
He is survived by two sons, Louis Harclerode and wife Tangie and Joe Alan
Harclerode and wife Hollie; one daughter, Missy McComack and husband Garry;
three brothers, David, Warren and Jack Keller; two sisters, Norma Lou and Mary
P. O’Dell and six grandchildren.

Harlow died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Tyler.
Born July 4, 1933, in Tira, she was a line worker for Maxim Medical. She had
been married to the late Otto Z. Harlow and was a member of the Church of
Christ.
She is survived by three sons, Ron Cheek of Palestine and Jerry and William
Cheek, both of Pottsboro; a daughter, Stephanie Biven of Tyler; two brothers,
John Bryan of Idabell, Okla. and Wayne T. Bryan of Bloomfield N.M.; two sisters,
Dorothy Whittington of Arlington and Ruth Woolaver of Decatur and eight
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were to be John Bryan, Jr., Ben Brown, Aubry Bryan, Wyatt Cheek, Ed
Whittington and Wayne East.

Service for Marion Eugene “Speedy” Harrell, 69, of Newark will be Thursday,
Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Shannon North Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Joe Woodell was to
officiate. Burial was to follow at Sweetwater Cemetery.
Harrell died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, in Fort Worth.
Born Oct. 18, 1931, in Cocoa, Fla., Harrell was a municipal judge at Pelican Bay
and a retired road construction contractor. He married Claudette Henson on Dec.
6, 1967. He was a member of the Tarrant Masonic Lodge No. 942. and Mosiah Temple
Shrine. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict.
He was preceded in death by his son, Scott Hall, and three brothers, Emmitt,
Claude and Fred.
He is survived by his wife, Claudette Harrell of Newark; seven children, Roy
Harrell and his wife Denise of Cocoa, Fla., Mary Harrell and her husband Ken
Ness of Divide, Colo., Linda Pederson of Lake Dallas, Susan Cook and her husband
Dusty of Keller, Katy Brackeen and her husband Johnny of Newark, Julie Woddell

service for Herman William Harris, 77, of Weatherford was March 26, 2001, at
Memory Gardens Cemetery in Weatherford.
Harris died at his home March 23, 2001.
He was born April 2, 1923, near Waxahachie to John and Effie Mae Harris. He
lived in the Paradise area for several years. He was a carpenter, cattleman, and
employee of Bell Helicopter. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorita Mae (Toni) Hunter, and a
great-grandson, Michael Brent Hunter.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Lee “Pete” Harris; three daughters and
sons-in-law, Lois Jean and Joseph Lee, Herma Joyce and Robert Bruton, and
Marilyn Jane and Jerry Newsome; a son-in-law, Mike Hunter; a sister and
brother-in-law, Mary Lee and Bobby Fulks; 11 grandchildren, Tammy Cottrell,

Hart died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Bridgeport.
Born July 26, 1913, in Greenwood, she was a homemaker and a member of the First
Baptist Church in Greenwood. She was preceded in death by two husbands, C.C.
“Dusty” Montgomery and Tom Hart.
She is survived by a son, Charles K. Montgomery; a daughter, Loujane Morrison of
Henrietta; a sister, Beth Rhodes of North Richland Hills; six grandchildren, 16
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Harvey died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001 in Denton.
Born Jan. 1, 1916 in Bolivar, he was retired from the aircraft industry.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Harvey of Sanger; a son, Don Harvey of Sanger;
a daughter, Carol Shrum of Greenwood; a sister, Lorene Barnett of Burleson and
four grandchildren.

Hays died Monday, July 16, 2001, in Decatur.
Born June 9, 1920, in Kildare, Okla., she was a homemaker. She married the late
Jack Hays on July 5, 1942, in Ponca City, Okla. She was a Methodist.
She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Lee Nichols.
She is survived by a daughter, Jeanie Nichols of Alto, N.M.; a great
granddaughter, Cristi Nowles and a great-grandson, Austin Lee Rodgers.

Born on May 14, 1919, in Clarksville to Elsa R. Neagle and Mary Heard Neagle she
was a member of Grace Baptist Chruch.

Born June 4, 1932, in Slidell, Hesteande retired as a machinist from Tetra Pac
of Denton. He was a member of the Slidell Baptist Church. He married Barbara
Anderson on Aug. 11, 1973, in Denton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Hesteande and two sisters, Mildred
Iona Boyd and Opal Bell Hesteande.
He is survived by six daughters, Amy Ree Adams and Jill Ann Richards of Slidell,
Cathy Lynn Sides of Chico, Ruth Elice Swanson of Whitesboro, Penny Jo Shurbet
and Brenda Faye Shurbet of Bowie; two sons, John Douglas Hesteande of Slidell

Born March 8, 1931, in LaFayette, Tenn. she moved to Texas in 1962 and had lived
in Fort Worth for 29 years before moving to Paradise 10 years ago.
Survivors include a brother, Bill West of Indianapolis, Ind.; a son, Johnny
Fishburn of Fort Worth; four daughters, Sue Samples of Concord, N.C., Denise
Palmer and Robin Palmer both of Fort Worth and Deborah Clark of Paradise; 10
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Born Mar. 29, 1922, in Decatur to W.C. and Dannie Shults, she married Jack G.
Hickey in 1938. He died in 1999.
She is survived by a brother, Dan Shults of San Antonio; two daughters, Dannes
Boyd and Jackye Van Court and husband Frank of San Angelo; five grandchildren,
Kirsty Teel and husband Jennings of Mason, Kelly Rogers and husband Robbie of

Bridgeport.

He was the father of Teresa Horner of Decatur.
Hillin died Friday, May 18, 2001, in Stephenville.
Born Nov. 14, 1929, in Pine Hill, he married Joyce Edmonds on Aug. 25, 1956, in
Freeport. He received bachelor and master of science degrees from Texas A&M
University. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a
deacon and taught Sunday School. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Masonic
Lodge No. 267, Southwest Dairy Museum director, AMPI former director, TSU rodeo
team sponsor, dairy judging coach, Stephenville Ambassador at Large and member
of American Dairy Shrine and American Dairy Science Association. He served two
terms on the Stephenville city council. He was also a veteran of the United
States Army.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hillin of Stephenville; two daughters, Teresa
Horner of Decatur and Terri Simpson of Lawrenceville, Ga.; one brother, John
Hillin of Brookville, Ohio; two sisters, Martha Wallace of Longview and Sarah
Parker of Tyler; five grandchildren, Cade Simpson, Abby Horner, Trevor Simpson,
William Horner and Molly Simpson and a mother-in-law, Cecilia B. Edmonds of Lake
Jackson.

Hilton and his wife Ruth Ann, Walter Dale Hilton and wife Melissa; two

she was an accomplished musician. She was associate organist and choir member at
William C. Martin United Methodist Church in Bedford for many years. She sang in
the choir at First United Methodist Church in Decatur and was a soloist in the
Decatur High School choir.
Her family was among Wise County’s early settlers, her paternal great
grandmother, Martha Ann Gose, came to Wise County in the early 1850s and married
John Harding in 1856. Her maternal family, the Robinson and Dickenson families,
were also early Wise County settlers.
She is survived by her husband, George Ray Hines of Rhome; her daughters, Debra
Hines of Colorado and Brenda Pratt and husband Joseph of Rhome; her mother,
LaVana Robinson Thornton of Westlake; a sister, Janet Thornton Tracy of
Nacogdoches; a brother, Stephen Thornton of Westlake; five grandchildren,
Christal Douglas and Jordan Douglas of Colorado, Phillip Pratt, Jeremy Pratt and
Joel Pratt all of Rhome; two great-grandchildren, Aaron Michael Douglas and
Taylor Raye Douglas of Colorado; a very special friend, Karen Parker of Fort
Worth and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Remembrances may be made in her name to the North Texas Multiple Sclerosis
Society or to the Humane Society of North Texas.

Hitchcock died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Bridgeport.
Born April 25, 1906, in Cookeville, Tenn., she lived in Vineyard before moving
to Azle. She was a retired Joplin School cafeteria cook. She was preceded in
death by her husband, William Hitchcock in 1941.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Hodges, Thomas

Service for Thomas Hodges, 82, of Alvord was Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Coker Funeral

Hodges died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, in Alvord.
Born June 4, 1919, to W.E. (Eddie) and Lula McGuairt Hodges in the Hopewell
Community, he was a rancher. He married Tommie Ann Wooten on May 3, 1941, in
Waurika, Okla. He was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church.
He attended Lone Mound School and later Alvord. After the sixth grade, he went
to work on the farm and was sent to West Texas to pick cotton. In 1946, he and
his wife purchased a 409 acre dairy farm two miles south of the Audubon
community.
At 28, he signed a co-operator’s agreement with the Denton-Wise County Soil
Conservation District. He and his wife were awarded the state-wide honor of
“Come Back Farmers” in 1953 and 1954. In 1985, the dairy cattle and
equipment were auctioned and the land was converted to farm and ranch land.
He was preceded in death by his parents; nine siblings and a son, Truitt Gene
Hodges.
He is survived by his wife, Tommie Ann Hodges; a son, James Hodges of Decatur;
three daughters and sons-in-law, La’Wayne and Karl Hauser of Fort Worth, Jo
Evelyn Atkins of New Braunfels and Margaret and Cleddy Gilbreath of Gainesville;
a sister, Meredith Hale of Alvord; a sister-in-law, Beulah Hodges of Alvord;
eight grandchildren, Truitt Jr. and Linda Hodges of Alvord, Todd and Robyn
Hodges of Decatur, Aaron and Christine Cowan of Seoul, Korea and Fayetteville,
N.C., Micah and Audrey Cowan of Fort Worth, Christy and Danny Patton of Houston,
Carl Atkins and Shelia McCormick of Haslet, Nicole and Robert Orsburn of

member of the Church of Christ and was preceded in death by his wife, Luella Kay
Hollaway, in 1990.

Arlington State Bank. After her retirement, she continued to be active at North
Davis Church of Christ.

Hornback, Martha Ruth Isbell

Ruth Hornback of Decatur tried to retire several times. In 1984 she retired from
the Gettys and Terrell Insurance Agency after almost 20 years of service. It
wasn’t long before she was employed as secretary at the First United Methodist
Church in Decatur.
Failing health forced her retirement from the church in 1993. That just gave her
more time to devote to the Decatur Hospital Auxiliary. She was honored last year
at the hospital auxiliary luncheon for 1,500 hours of service.
Her death at age 78 on Aug. 27, 2001, ended a lifetime of service to her family,
her community and her church. Funeral is at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at First
United Methodist Church in Decatur. The service will be conducted by her nephew,
Dr. Charles R. Millikan, pastor of Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church
in Galveston, Dr. Rusty Hedges, pastor of First United Methodist Church in
Decatur and the Rev. John Earl Taylor of Dallas, retired pastor. Burial will be
in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jared, Joshua, Glenn Frank, Paul, Grant,
Justin and Hunter Hornback and Coleman Sterling.
Martha Ruth Isbell Hornback was born in Whitewright on Nov. 19, 1922, to the
Rev. Keener Regan Isbell and Eva Young Isbell. She graduated from Mineola High
School and attended what is now the University of North Texas, seeking a degree
in music. She married James Franklin Hornback in Center, Texas, in 1943, in a
ceremony performed by her father.
The Hornbacks moved to Decatur in 1954 to enter the dairy business. Jim
Frank’s untimely death in a farming accident in 1982 lead to Ruth’s assuming
his position on the Wise County Farm Bureau board of directors, a position she
held for 14 years.
Her church activities included teaching Sunday school, singing in the chancel
choirs, serving as president of the United Methodist Women and serving eight
years as a UMW district officer. She also served as president of the Decatur
Woman’s Club in 1964 and as parliamentarian and secretary of the hospital
auxiliary.
She traveled extensively in Europe, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark
and was an avid bridge player.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters and
brothers-in-law, Emily Isbell Blunk and W.D. Blunk and Geraldine Isbell Millikan
and the Rev. Herman C. Millikan and a brother, K.R. Isbell Jr.
She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, James Richard Hornback
and Sylvia Wood Hornback of Austin, Gary Don and Sheryl Messersmith Hornback of
Richardson, Ronald Isbell and Julia Atwater Hornback of Cascade, Wis.; eight
grandsons, Grant, Paul and Glenn Frank Hornback and wife Michelle of Houston,
Hunter Hornback and wife Courtney of Raleigh, N.C., Justin Hornback of
Smithfield, Va., Jared and Joshua Hornback of Richardson, Coleman Sterling of

States Army. He moved to Texas in 1970 and attended schools in Hurst and Keller,
graduating from Keller High School in 1978. He received his associate’s degree
from Mountain View College in Dallas and his A and P license from the Braniff
School of Maintenance in the early 1980s.
He was preceded in death by his father, Duane C. Houghlin.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, Fay and Guy MacFarland of Searcy,
Ark.; three sisters, Sheree Castaneda and husband Dan of Pasadena, Julie Barton
and husband David of Tryon, N.C. and Anna Franklin of Arlington; two brothers,

2, 1980. He was preceded in death by his father, Bryan Houtchens, and his son,
Bryan Clay Houtchens.

was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was awarded two Purple Heart
medals.

and moved to Dallas in 1948 where she was actively involved with the Dallas
Civic Opera, the Marianne Scruggs Garden Club ande the Dallas Women’s Club.
The Jackson’s primary business was the Katie Petroleum Company and she was
also the namesake of the Dallas Press Club’s Katie Awards.
A dedicated philanthropist, she and her husband established The Katie Fund at
Communities Foundation of Texas and recently pledged $15 million to the
University of Texas at Austin for a new geology building.
They also were early pioneers in the oil and gas industry in Wise County where
Jackson was a benefactor to public libraries. The John A. and Katherine G.
Jackson Library in Decatur was dedicated in April 1989. The John A. and
Katherine G. Jackson Municipal Library in Bridgeport was dedicated in September
1990.
The Jacksons have also donatedly generously to Presbyterian Healthcare System of
Dallas, the Dallas Blues Foundation and Texas Lutheran College in Seguin.
She was also honored as the only female member of the Wise County Roughnecks’
Club, a sign of her involvement in her husband’s oil and gas business in Wise
County and his quest to capture the natural gas he believed, correctly, would be
found in Wise County.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Oma Sebestek of Temple and Ann Hax of
Victoria and a brother, Otto Graeter.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Jackson of Dallas; and a sister-in-law,
Anna Louise Graeter of Temple.

Christian Church, Dr. James Moudy’s Class, the Woman’s Club and Ladies

Leverett died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in Decatur.
Born Jan. 10, 1929, in Electra, he was a retired truck driver for Martin Eagle
Oil. He was also a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Melva Leverett, in 1996 and a brother,
J.C. Leverett.
He is survived by two sons, Jackie Leverett and wife Monica and Terry Leverett
and wife Lockade; a daughter, Rhonda McKnight and husband Joe; two brothers,
Junior Leverett and Freddie Leverett; two sisters, Pat Reeves and Jeanette
Bevill; eight grandchildren, Toni, Amanda, Kelly, B.J., Shelley, Jeremy, Melissa
and Kay Lynn and four great-grandchildren, Andrea, Ariel, Rheason and Kelan.

Lewis died Nov. 15, 2001, in Monterey, Calif.
Born June 2, 1929, in Bridgeport, she was a retired school teacher. She was
active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and an avid supporter of the
Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack women’s basketball team. She was a member of the
Pleasant View Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Harry
Jackson Lewis.
She is survived by a daughter, Nita Lewis Miller and husband Bill of Carmel,
Calif.; a son, Joe Lewis and wife Betsy of The Netherlands; grandchildren,
Jocelyn, Will, Whitney and Sam; a sister, Lorene Senters of Bridgeport; three
brothers, Marion “Shorty” Green of Bridgeport, Cecil “PeeWee” Green of
Roundtop and Robert L. “Bo” Green of Bridgeport; and numerous nieces and
nephews.

member of Boy Scout Troop 194 of Bridgeport, the Central Fellowship Church of
Christ and the Walk to Emmaus Community.
He is survived by his parents, Lowell and Sara Longley of Wichita Falls; his
wife, Gatha; two sons, Landon and Russell, both of Bridgeport; brothers, Rick of

Association and the National Cutting Horse Association.
He is survived by his wife, Arda Lee Madeley of Paradise; his parents, George

Born March 19, 1929, in Colorado City, he had lived in the Bridgeport area for
37 years. He retired in 1997 after 13 years as a heavy equipment operator for
Wise County Precinct 4. He was a member of The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness.
He married Nancy Orona on Feb. 13, 1954, in Colorado City.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Madrid; five daughters, Cynthia Ryberg, Mary

brother, Jessie Madrid; two sisters, Florencia Heredia and Maria Lujan; seven
