Jost Hite (Hans Justus Heyd, 1685-1761) of Frederick County, Virginia
Jost Hite (baptized Hans Justus Heyd in Bonfeld in the Kraichgau region of Germany) is the most famous early American Hite ancestor. He was born in 1685, the son of Johannes Heyd, a butcher of Bonfeld, and his wife Anna Magdalena. He married Anna Maria Merckle in Bonfeld in 1704. They had two daughters who died in infancy in Bonfeld and then had a third daughter before departing for England in 1709. In 1710, they sailed to New York with numerous other Germans who had gone to England the year before. Eventually they moved to Pennsylvania and then finally to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 1732, where Jost became a prominent landowner. Anna Maria died in 1738 in Frederick County and Jost died there in 1761. These were their children: Maria Elisabetha (Mary) Hite (1708-after 1768) married George Bowman Elizabeth Hite (1711-1783) married John Paul Froman Magdalena Hite (1713-1771) married Jacob Chrisman John Hite (ca. 1715-1792) married Sarah Eltinge Jacob Hite (1719-1776) married 1st Catherine O'Bannon and 2nd to Frances (Madison) Beale Isaac Hite (1723-1795) married Eleanor Eltinge Abraham Hite (1729-1790) married Rebecca Van Meter Joseph Hite (died 1757) married Elizabeth (Van Meter or McKay)

Jacob Hite (died 1792) of Frederick County, Virginia
Jacob Hite, a woolcomber, first appeared in land records of Frederick County, Virginia in 1763. He is sometimes confused with Jacob Hite (1719-1776), the son of Jost Hite. Jacob took an Oath of Allegiance to the British Crown in 1769 along with his son Alexander Hite (1740-1813). This proves that both were born outside the British empire, so Jacob probably came to the colonies from Germany after 1740. Jacob's wife's name is not known, but he had at least one other son, George Hite (1755-1833). He may have had other children also. Casper Hite, Matthias Hite, and Jacob Hite all may have been sons of this Jacob, but proof has not yet been found. Jacob Hite died in 1792 in Frederick County.

John Hight (1726?-1804) of Charlotte County, Virginia and Burke County, North Carolina
John Hight lived along Bluestem Creek in Charlotte County, Virginia with his wife Mary. His family is listed on the flyleaf of a dictionary published in 1796. Circumstantial evidence suggests the information in the dictionary is primarily accurate. John eventually moved to Burke County, North Carolina where he died in 1804.

Abraham may have had brothers named Daniel Hite, Andrew Hite, and John Hite, but the relationship is not proven. John Hite (ca. 1760 ca. 1824) of Shenandoah (now Page) County, Virginia and Sullivan County, Tennessee
John Hite (died 1831) came to Shenandoah County, Virginia from Pennsylvania in time to be listed in the 1785 tax lists. John married first to Catherine Decker and second to Frances Jackson. By Catherine, he had a son named Jacob (born ca. 1790). At least one published source has confused this John with John Hite, Jr. (1751-1808) the son of John Hite (ca. 1715-1792) and the grandson of Jost Hite. This is clearly an error. This John (who died in 1831) may have had brothers named Abraham Hite, Daniel Hite, and Andrew Hite, but the relationship is not proven. Recent research by Jim Hite of Kingsport, Tennessee has provided strong circumstantial evidence that all four alleged brothers were sons of the 1737 immigrant Andreas Heyd who lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania with his wife Magdalena, but no solid documentation has yet been found. John and Frances moved to Sullivan County, Tennessee after 1799. In addition to the aforementioned son Jacob, John also had a daughter named Nancy. He died in Sullivan County in 1831.

Christopher served in at least four different regiments of the Continental Army between 1777 and 1783. After the war, he lived in Bedford County, Pennsylvania and had settled in St. Clair Township by the time of its creation in 1794. He and his wife Margaret (ca. 1767-1828) had eleven children. Conrad Hite was born in Bedford, Pennsylvania in 1763. Some published information falsely identifies Conrad as a great-grandson of Jost Hite through Jost's son John Hite and his grandson, John Hite, Jr. (1751-1808, far too young to be Conrad's father). Conrad served for nine months in the 8th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Line in the Continental Army. His wife's name was Maria (or Mary) and they had at least six children. Jacob Hite was born in Frederick County, Maryland in 1761 and brought by his father (name uncertain) to Frederick County, Virginia when he was a year old. Some published information has confused Jacob (born 1761) with Jacob O'Bannon Hite, a great-grandson of Jost Hite through his son Jacob Hite (1719-1776) and his grandson, John Hite (died 1776). However, court records in Augusta County, Virginia prove that Jacob O'Bannon Hite died without issue before 1794. Matthias died in 1832 in Frederick County.

Jacob Hite (1780s-1845) of Cumberland Valley Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania
Jacob Hite was born in the 1780s. He married Elizabeth Houck in 1807 in Berkeley County, West Virginia. Soon after, they moved to Cumberland Valley Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They had eleven children (Elizabeth may not have been the mother of all of them). Jacob died in 1845 in Bedford County. Some researchers believe this Jacob is the Jacob Hite born in 1785 to George Hite and Deborah Rutherford in present-day Jefferson County, West Virginia. George was a son of Jacob Hite (1719-1776) and grandson of Jost Hite. This may be accurate. It is also possible, however, that this Jacob is the Jacob Heyd baptized in 1787 in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, son of John Georg Heyd and Magdalena Sahler. Neither link can be considered proven at this stage.

William Hite (ca. 1786-1857) of Berkeley County, West Virginia
William Hite, born ca. 1786 in Pennsylvania, married Sarah Zeckman in 1818 in Berkeley County, West Virginia. He fathered between seven and ten children, at least two of whom were born before his marriage to Sarah, so he must have married twice. There was a William Hite who married Sally Houck in 1812 in Berkeley county and some researchers think it is this William, but that conclusion is problematic. Sally Houck's mother, Margaret Houck, named Sally Hite in her 1819 will as though she was still alive, so that raises the possibility of two William Hites in Berkeley County. William Hite, the husband of Sarah Zeckman, died ca. 1857. It is possible that this William (or the one who married Sally Houck if they are not the same man) is the John William Heyd baptized in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania in 1789, son of John Georg Heyd and Magdalena Sahler. At this stage, there is no proof.

George Hight of Pennsylvania and Wayne County, Ohio
George Hight, born ca. 1794 in Pennsylvania, was obviously of German origin since he signed his name in German. His wife's name was Elizabeth and they had at least eight children. They settled in Wayne County, Ohio in the 1830s. George died there ca. 1863. It is possible that this George is the same person as John George Heyd, baptized in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania in 1794, son of John Georg Heyd and Magdalena Sahler. At this stage, there is no proof.

Union County, Kentucky Hite Family
Three sons of Francis Theodor Heuts and Joanna Maria Vernaus of the village of Heerlen in the province of Limburg in the Netherlands (then a French possession) came to the United States in 1803 in the care of Trappist monks. These brothers were Joannes "Jean or John" Henricus Heuts (born 1783), Petrus "Peter" Caspar Heuts (born 1785), and Martinus "Martin" Lambertus Heuts (born 1790). The two younger ones, Peter and Martin, settled in Union County, Kentucky, while John settled in St. Louis County, Missouri. Many of the descendants of the Union County branch spell their surname as Hite, while Hites is more common among John's descendants. The lineage of these brothers has been traced to Helgerus Heuts, who married Elizabeth Feuren in 1652 in Voerendaal in Limburg.

Malinda Hite and Robert McChesney, Augusta County, Virginia
Malinda (Cavender or Corrinder, maiden name uncertain) was born in 1803 near Mount Storm, West Virginia. About 1823, she apparently married a Hite (first name unknown). Her husband may have been a son of Anthony Hite but this is not proven. Malinda was living in Augusta County, Virginia as a household head in 1830 with three children. Her husband had apparently died or deserted her. After 1830, she began a common-law relationship with Robert McChesney (1790-1863) and had six children by him, all of whom used the Hite surname. Malinda died in 1893 in Augusta County.
