Rutledge, Ann Grimke (maiden name Castello) 1821 NTO10 NEWPORT
HISTORICAL CEMETERY #: NT010 TRINITY CHURCH CEMETERY
NEWPORT RI
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This entry is intriguing. Ordinarily, I wouldn't take a long look at a
Rutledge buried in Rhode Island. However, there is frequent mention of
Rhode Island in the writings about the S.C. Rutledges, and related lines.
It's surprising how many times these people from SC wrote about their
travels in PA, NY, DE, MA, NH, ME, RI, and CT. Some even owned property
in Newport, RI; Henry Augustus Middleton, for one. Nathaniel Middleton
of SC married a woman from Bristol, RI. Just a couple of examples.
Of course, everyone knows that John Rutledge married Elizabeth Grimke.
As for the Ann Grimke Rutledge buried in Rhode Island, I suspect she was
the wife of William Rutledge (d. 1822), son of John and Elizabeth
(above). Ann's maiden name on the cemetery record is shown as
Castello. South Carolina records have her as the daughter of Charles
Coslett, or Cosslett, and Ann Grimke. Ann Grimke Coslett and William
Rutledge married in 1797, and were cousins. William's will dated March
1822 left all of his estate to his brother, Frederick. William
requested to be buried in St. Michael's Church yard (SC) by the side of
his child, Ann Coslett Rutledge [baptized 1798]. William further
requested: "No invitation, no notice to be taken of my death in
newspapers, no crape[?] or mourning or any of that nonsense, and to be
conveyed to my grave as early as possible at the beating of the morning
drum; coffin of Northward pine covered with black baise".
