Hi Linda,
I'm not sure about this William, but the Ezells of Surry Co NC are mine....the only William I have
in the proper time frame? (there were no dates mentioned) is William Rutledge b. abt 1795 NC, d.
1851 Lawrence Co AR, m. Margaret Buchanan b. 30 Nov 1795 Lincoln Co NC.  These are my gggg
grandparents.  Their grandson, Jefferson F. Rutledge m. Frances "Nancy" Catherine Ezell.  I don't
think I have any Neals in my database at all so the William you found probably is not.  Its
curious though that he was also connected to the Ezells.

Ron, do you have any ideas?

Cook's daughters married a William Knight (first name unknown).  There also were
transactions between Ruddells, Ezells, and Henry Cook in Surry Co., NC (Henry

So far, I've managed to mess up the Rutledge genealogy in my gedfile by
believing this William Rutledge was the son of Thomas and Jean Rutledge of August,
VA.  I know this is not true.  Would anyone happen to know what line my
 William would descend from?

As a sidenote for those who have connected Rutledges to Ann Cook's will in E.
Nottingham, PA.  Her maiden name was Jones (wife of Neal Cook) but was
originally Jonasson, daughter of Mounce Jones (Mons Jonasson) and Ingaborg Lycon.

 Any help greatly appreciated.

My 3rd great grandfather was William Rutledge, who was married to Leah Harris.  He was born about 1760 in North Carolina and died 1851 in Fulton County Illinois.  He was the son of Peter Rutledge, who was married to Matilda Branham.  Peter was born about 1760 in North Carolina and died before 1820, probably in South Carolina.  Peter was the son of William Rutledge Sr. (he had a son named William Jr.) and Matilda King.  William died before Jun 1804 in Stokes County North Carolina

 Hope this helps.

On the DNA test did they specifically look for Native Indian ancestry or was
it just on the Rutledge`s? Also unless you do a full test that includes the
mother I don`t think the Native Indian heritage will show up. There are
Rutledges on the Guion Miller Rolls. Also I have this info.I paid an indian
genealogist to find some info for me and he came up with this. Now they could
have been from another tribe as I only asked for info on the cherokee. Also
just because they were rejected does not mean the Rutledges below were not
Indian. As many were rejected but they were still indian. I also sent away
for a Guion Miller Roll app and it says that Elijah Ruteldge born Stokes Co.
NC was cherokee on his app but it was rejected. he was married to Isabel
Boles they had Benjamin Rutledge who married Juda Gibson they had Marion
Rutledge born 1846 Stokes Co.NC she married JH Rutledge JUda Gibson was

Rutledge is not found on the Cherokee Reservation Roll of 1818, the Chapman
Roll of 1851, the Drennen Roll of 1851 or in the History of the Cherokee
Indians.  The Rutledge folks that applied for the Miller Roll in 1906 were
all living in Georgia and Tennessee.  All of them were Rejected.

 Gloria,

I am also descended from Joseph Rutledge and Mary Paschal.  My kit
number on the Rutledge DNA web site is 4156 in Group 2.  Everyone in
Group 2 has European ancestry that is most likely from England or
Scotland on their male Rutledge side.  For this reason I don't think
that their son Little Berry was an Indian unless he was adopted.  I
don't know who the wife of the Little Berry Rutledge that was born in
1842 is.  Perhaps he married a Cherokee.  What reason do you have for
thinking that you have Indian ancestors in your Rutledge line?

NEW HANOVER:

ROUTLEDGE/Rutledge, William Jr., Lieutenant to Captain, Duplin Militia.

In the Original research for a book, this man was thought to have lived
through the war and died in 1795 and left his will in New Hanover Co.
NC. However, A check on RW pension application files gives this account
by William Goff, then of MS: Captain Rutledge at Moorfield, fifteen
miles north of Wilmington NC when they were pursued by a party of
British, Captain Rutledge's horse fell through a pole bridge and that
killed the horse. Captain Rutledge was badly hurt and was captured and
killed by the British. NC RW Pay voucher: Account of Wm Routledge,
dec'd., late Lieutenant was exhibited for pay and etc to 3 April 1781.
What this means is the Captain Rutledge was killed by the British on 3
April 1781, north of Wilmington NC. The man that left his 1795 will in
Wilmington, was a different man.

Title:         Papers,  1782-1872.
Description:   663 items (1.0 linear  ft.)
Notes:         In the Southern  Historical Collection,  University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill  (#948).
In part  photocopies.
John Rutledge (1766-1819) of South Carolina  was
the son of Governor John Rutledge (1739-1800). He studied  in
Charleston and Philadelphia and traveled in Europe in  1787
through early 1790. His wife was Sarah Motte Smith.  He
practiced law in Charleston, was a planter in the  Savannah
River area, served in the South Carolina legislature, was  a
member of the United States House of  Representatives,
1797-1803, and was an officer in the South Carolina  militia.
The major portion of the papers consists  of
letters written to Rutledge and is most detailed for  his
years in Europe and his period of political activity.  There
are letters in the earlier period from friends in England  and
Europe and from prominent persons he met while there.  There
are a few letters from his brothers in Charleston, but  none
from his father. Later letters deal primarily with  politics
and the Federal Party and are from political leaders  and
government officials. There are also a number of letters  from
Rutledge to his father-in-law, Bishop Robert Smith,  written
during the period 1797-1803. Rutledge and his wife  were
separated in 1804 and there is some discussion of divorce  law
about this time. After 1808 there is little  political
material and the papers deal largely with business  and
plantation affairs. Later items include scattered  business
papers of Hugh Rose, a South Carolina planter whose  daughter
married Rutledge's son; papers of Abram A. Massias, major  and
paymaster in the United States Army; and scattered papers  of
later members of the Rutledge family. Also among the  major
correspondents are William Short, with reference to  the
French Revolution, and Harrison Gray  Otis.

Hello, Jane,

This branch of Rutledges is not part of my line.  (At least there is no
proof we share a common ancestor within the past 600 years).

I don't know a lot about Rachel Williams who married William C.
Rutledge.  Her father reportedly was George.  George Williams married a
Rachel, last name unknown.  Rachel Williams Rutledge was born about
1806, in GA.  Rachel, wife of George, was born circa 1774, in NC.

In Dallas County, AL Estate Settlements, 1842:  Estate of George
Williams mentions as heirs, William Rutledge, and Rachel, his wife.

Rachel Williams, age 76 NC, was enumerated in Wm. Rutledge's HH, 1850
Dallas County, AL.  That same census record has Rachel Rutledge's (Wm's
wife) birthplace as Germany.  So, that's a contradiction.  I'm more
inclined to believe it was GA.

Some of William Rutledge's (1792/4-1867) descendants claim William's
father was Richard (1770-1832), son of John, Jr., and Hannah Rutledge
(part of Hanging Rock John's family - Camden/Kershaw SC).

Based on what I have read, Richard had a son named "William A.
Rutledge", but dates don't match those of William C., who went to TX.

Richard's will of Marion County, AL, made 1831, names sons Abraham,
Smith, William A., and James M..  Another son, John, died in 1823.
Richard's wife was "Winney" (Winefred Patience Elizabeth Blanche SMITH).
Son, William A., above, reportedly was born ca. 1819 and died in 1853.

One of the descendants of Atascosa County, TX Rutledges claims William
Calvin Rutledge was born in Abbeville, SC in 1792, and married Rachel
Williams, born 1806, Jones County, GA, dau of William Williams (not
George).  So, there is a difference of opinion as to the first name of
Rachel's father.

Kermit Rutledge

Angel, thanks for the thoughtful response, it's always great to know others are trying to help with your research.

The William RUTLEDGE who is in Stokes Co., NC with spouse Matilda KING does not have known parents at this time, so he is not the son of James.  We have his family and quite a bit is known about his descendents (except for the one I think is my ancestor, of course!).

Since we know, through DNA, that this Rutledge/King family is the right family, we then know my ancestor is not Thomas, s/o Joseph Rutledge and Mary Paschal.  It is more likely that my ancestor's name is Peter than Thomas.

Thanks again, keep the ideas coming.  Someday we'll find the rock they crawled out from under - maybe all the brick wall people are under the same rock, having a party!

Lynda

James Rutledge  father to William, James and Joseph.  Joseph, married to Mary
Paschal, had 10 children, one who is named Thomas, born in Va.

Is this maybe the father to Jane? That would make her both the granddaughter
to Joseph and Mary, and her father would be the nephew to William.

Larry,

I beginning to think that Peter Rutledge born 1790 was a nephew of William Rutledge Sr.  We know that he wasn't a son of Johnson & my Peter and here is a note I have for William Jr.

This is from The Heritage of Stokes County North Carolina 1981, Published by the Stokes County Historical Society in Cooperation with Hunter Publishing Company. Jerry Rutledge wrote in article 853, pg 442. " Between 1803 and 1810, all the sons of William Sr., had either died or left the county. In 1806 the count records of Giles Co., Tennessee (now Poluski), William Jr., Johnson, and James appear as newcomers. In 1806, Johnson Rutledge executed a power of attorney while in Giles County, Tennessee for the sale of some property in Stokes County. In 1810 Peter was charged and convicted in criminal court at Germantown for failure to pay a debt. He was imprisoned for some period of time. Peter made an application for release from jail as a pauper. He was released and apparently left the county"

  David,

Thanks for the update.  Good to hear from you again.

I looked at Barbara's info and she replied back to a question I had.  She
builds an excellent case for your Peter, son of William Sr., being born
  much earlier.

Kirk and Wendy's Peter, born ca 1790 must have been a grandson, or Nephew
of William Sr. The DNA sayes he is part of the same line, but not when.

The DNA is very stable too.  I haven't tried yet to count the number of
transmission events between your and my tests,  but some of the others in
Group 1 have had mutations in as little as 6 events.

Thanks to everyone who gave me updated information.

I agree with Lynda that the Peter Rutledge who is the ancestor of

son of Matilda King, who apparently had her first son, Johnson,

Ali,

"Neal" would be the first name, not the last name.  So the last name would be
COOK.  I know that my William RUTLEDGE associated with COOKS/RUDDELLS/EZELLS
and that he was born about 1690 in DE/MD.  Half-siblings listed in his will
were KNIGHTS and that he was at one time married to one of the COOK daughters.
I doubt he had any children but resided in NC.

Hi Linda,
I'm not sure about this William, but the Ezells of Surry Co NC are
mine....the only William I have
in the proper time frame? (there were no dates mentioned) is William Rutledge
b. abt 1795 NC, d.
1851 Lawrence Co AR, m. Margaret Buchanan b. 30 Nov 1795 Lincoln Co NC.
These are my gggg
grandparents.  Their grandson, Jefferson F. Rutledge m. Frances "Nancy"
Catherine Ezell.  I don't
think I have any Neals in my database at all so the William you found
probably is not.  Its
curious though that he was also connected to the Ezells.

Ron, do you have any ideas?

In 1985 or so I bought the book "The Heritage of Stokes County North
Carolina 1981" Published /edited by the Stokes County Historical
Society.  A little while after I bought the book, I went through it
and tried to enter anyone with any connections to the Rutledge Family
into my genealogy program.

I have recently started looking again at the data in my old program.
I just saw where the brother to my g grandfather moved to Missouri
about 1865.  His name was Burgess Martin Rutledge.

Burgess Martin1 Rutledge.  Family moved to Missouri in 1864.
Burgess was born at Stokes Co.., NC, circa 1828. Burgess was the
son of Johnson Rutledge, born in Stokes County, NC
Burgess Martin Rutledge married Lousia Moore, daughter of Creed Taylor
Moore and Nancy Kiser, on Sun. 18 Jun 1854 at Stokes Co.., NC.

Nancy Jane Rutledge.

Nancy was born at Stokes Co.., NC, circa 1854.
Alexander William Rutledge.  Alexander was born at Stokes Co.., NC, on 19 Mar 1858.

Creed Taylor Rutledge.  Creed was born at Stokes Co.., NC, on 1 Jan 1861
Creed Taylor Rutledge married, at age 22, Emily Wilson on Thu. 12
   Apr 1883.

Since some of the Group 1 DNA subjects have ancestors in Missouri, I
wonder if there could be a connection?

Hi,

I am asking for help in sorting out two Peter Rutledges and their
relationship to William Rutledge Sr, of Stokes Co NC, husband of Matilda
King.  DNA tests on their descendents give a perfect match.  The question
arises, how are they related?  It is a terrific puzzle.  Several of us have
been interested in this question.  Here is what has been figured out so far.

William Rutledge, Sr appears as a taxpayer in the 1759 Rowan Co NC Tax
List.  This indicates that he was at least 21, so he was  born in 1738 or
earlier.

Peter #1 is a generation after William, Sr.  He appears in the 1800
Greenvile Co, SC census with a wife, Matilda Branham, and three sons and a
daughter under 10.  It seems likely, based on the distribution of the
children in the census, that Peter #1 is the father of William Rutledge, b
abt 1792, who married Leah Harris.  There are no other Rutledges in the
1800 Greenville Co, SC census, and William Rutledge did have two brothers
and one sister in 1800.  Only 12 of the 1,642 families in the Greenville SC
census have this distribution.  There is also a document that shows that
Peter Rutledge took out a $50 loan from Benjamin Harris, Leah's
father.  Apparently the loan was not repaid, because Benjamin Harris
mentions that Matilda owed him $50 in his will.  For complete information
on this family, please see Barbara Cunningham's wonderful link

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=barbjo&id=I1593

Peter #2 is a generation after Peter #1.  Peter #2 appears in the 1840 and
1850 Washington Co, VA censuses.  In the 1840 census he is listed as being
in his 40's.  I cannot read his age on the 1850 census sheet.  In the 1850
census, his children are listed as Robert (age 14) and Mathias (age 16).

On the Rutledge DNA site

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rutledgedna/index.html

the matches are #368 Larry Rutledge (from William Rutledge, Sr and Matilda
King), #34723 Dave Rutledge (from Willliam Rutledge and Leah Harris), and
#3781 Noah Rutledge and #24555 Kirk Rutledge (from Peter #2).  The DNA
tests can only show that people have a common ancestor, not whether they
descend from each other.  However, Peter seems to have been an uncommon
name at the time.  In addition to these two Peter Rutledges, there are only
six others in the US censuses from 1790 to 1850, and one of these, the 1850
Newton Co, MO Peter (age 31), was the last child of Peter #1.  But Peter is
the name of William Sr's father-in-law.  This suggests we start with the
assumption that the two Peters descend from William Sr, rather than simply
sharing a common ancestor.

The simplest explanation is that William Rutledge is the father of Peter #1
and the grandfather of Peter #2 through a different son.

The case is easy to make for Peter #1.  William Sr did have a son named
Peter, and he could be Peter #1.  William Sr's will mentions Peter after
his two oldest sons, Johnson and William, Jr.  Not much is known about him
except that he was jailed for a short period in 1810 in Germantown, Stokes
Co NC for not paying debts.  Even though Peter #1 only appears in the 1800
Greenville SC census, there is an NC connection.  In the 1880 Neosho Newton
Co, MO census, his son Thomas lists the birthplace of his father as
NC.  There is also a connection to Stokes Co.  Peter #1's wife Matilda
Branham was likely either the daughter or much younger wife of Barnabas
Branham of Stokes Co.  In the 1790 census, Barny Branum is only four lines
away from William Rutledge.  There are also interesting coincidences in
names.  Peter #1's daughter Elizabeth gave her first son the unusual first
name of King, the family name of William Sr's wife.  The names of six of
the seven undisputed children of William Sr (Johnson, William Jr, Peter,
Benjamin, Elijah, Mary) are repeated in some form among Peter #1's children.

For Peter #2, the question arises, is he the son of Johnson or William Jr,
or another of William Sr's sons, like Benjamin, who married Mary
Timmins?  We do not know the answer.  Johnson's will lists Joel, William,
Elijah, Absalom, Benjamin and Johnson as his male heirs, and presumably,
his sons.  No Peter.  It is also possible that Peter #2 is more distantly
related; Robert and Mathias are not names that appear in William Sr's
family.  The contrast with Peter #1's family could not be stronger.  There,
seven names reappear.

Thank you for any ideas anyone might have in sorting this  out.  Does
anyone have a copy of Johnson Rutledge's will?  Does anyone know the names
of William Sr's other grandsons through William Jr and Benjamin?  Are there
any Peters among them?

Dave Rutledge

I'll put this much up Kirk and you can send the rest when you get home.

You will find this information on the Most Wanted website in two sections, both NC and VA and in the DNA section.

Subject: [RUTLEDGE] Peter Rutledge Lineage on the Rutledge Surname DNA Project

 Kirk - Karen and Wendy,

In November Kirk  wrote about his line - KIT 24555.

Hi, Kirk Rutledge here. My wife is the one who receives and sends the
genealogy info...I just supplied the cheek swab! No, seriously, she's been
trying to figure out how to upload info to the website, or maybe she just
hasn't had time to do it.

I track my earliest ancestor to Peter Rutledge NC/VA (about 1780). We are
on vacation so I don't have access to our files. Lineage goes Peter
 -Lafayette-Mathias-Jesse Perle-Keith Carlos-Gary Keith-me. Sometime around
Jesse Perle our family moved to Iowa. I moved to Oregon in 1985.

 Happy Thanksgiving!

 Kirk

Could we talk about your line a little more?

Your 25/25 exact match with mine and Noah's results warrant more
investigation, particularly since Noah's ancestor was also Peter
Rutledge in the same time frame.

Noah's ancestor Peter was, we think, the son of my William in Stokes
 Co., NC.

Have you talked to Wendy who supplied the information about Noah's
 line?

Do you know of any earlier Rutledge-Cobb connections in NC or GA:

George Washington Rutledge b.ca 1797 NC married Sarah Caswell Cobb in North Carolina.

Sarah's uncle was Joseph Cobb who migrated to Wilkes County, Georgia; Joseph's daughter, Phalbia "Falby" Cobb b. 1770-1775 .

Phalbia Cobb married James Brooks.  They named their son, Jacob RUTLEDGE Brooks b. 1806 Warren County, Georgia.

Hello,
I am searching for any info regarding marriages between Rutledge and Robinson (or possibly Robertson) in the period from 1770-1800, particularly in NC and SC.
I believe that I am descended from a female Rutledge, relation to Governor John Rutledge of SC, through Martha (Patsy) Robinson, born 1794-99 in NC.
I would greatly appreciate any help in this search.

Hello All...

Does anyone have experience or advice on how to locate a specific DAR linage
report?  I've seen various DAR books in libraries, but I can't seem to find
any register or index which indicate where specific reports may be housed.

I have been corresponding with a desendant of the Gay family line.  He has
given me a lead re: the line of John Rutledge, Jr. of N.C., son of John Rutledge
who migrated to NC from Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA.   John Rutledge Jr was
married to Ann, last name unknown to me.  They had several children: Ann,
Abel, Prudence, Margaret, Susannah and Isaac.

I have located a will for Abel which mentions "my brother-in-law William
Gay."   William Gay is also the estate executor.  The Gay family information
states that Abel's sister, Ann, married William Gay, on Aug. 26, 1808, but the
source information is lacking.  I believe some source information may be available
in a DAR linage report Volume 137 page 106... a report listing the linage of
a James Gay.

If anyone knows where I can find this report, I would greatly appreciate
hearing from you.  Thanks...

John Rutledge in really sunny Oregon

Hi Sandy,

Noticed you were researching in Ohio.  By any chance, do you have any
Rutledge's in Amesville, Athens Co, OH; Gratiot, Muskingum Co., OH; Mt.
Sterling, Muskingum Co., OH; Westland Township, Guernsey Co., OH; Pleasant
Plains, Warren Co., OH or surrounding areas?  The time line would be from
somewhere around 1827 - 1900's.   Thanks for checking.

While I an thinking about it, I am also asking all the others on the list,
too.  Seems to be many new names, welcome to our list.

Found the following on the NCLINCOL-L List.  it is for the July 1818 Lincoln County Court minutes.

William Rutledge having been appointed Guardian of Jane Rutledge & Sally
Rutledge orphan daughters of Charles Rutledge dec'd came into Open Court
& entered into bonds with George Rutledge Security in the sum of  £100
in each, & Richard Cowen who had previously been their Guardian was
released from his said Guardianship

For those of us researching William Rutledge Sr d. 1803 in North Carolina,
Robert Wright posted a GED to Ancestry several months back.  He has
notes for William Sr, and several of his children.  He recorded the different
William Rutledges and Johnson Rutledges in various census, and tried to
figure which William was the son, and which the father.

He has information about William Sr's son William, and to try to avoid a
little confusion, I;ll call him William II, and William II's son is William III.

He has documents showing William II and some of his siblings going to
Williamson Co., TN, which after several county splits became Giles Co.  He
shows William III going to Indiana, Gibson Co I believe. I cannot do Robert's
research justice because I am not that familiar with those lines.
The GED number is 1656300 if you know a method to search for it.  I
would post his note on William II, but it is pretty long for the list.  I've
talked to Robert and he has some good information.  He has given me
permission to pass it on.
If anyone wants the one note, I extracted it and I could email it to you if
you contact me off list.
I know in the DNA project, a lot of the brick walls are "William" in TN
and Indiana.
Another researcher, Charlie Rutledge, has lots of good about the various
William Rutledges in Surry, Stokes and Anson Co. NC.  He does not
use a computer to store all his information though.  He is going to send
some paper documents to me.
After finding William Sr in about 1968 or so, I'd sure like to get back a
little further.

A Record of John Rutledge and his descendents

by Houston Odell Rutledge & Sybil King Rutledge

John Rutledge, b 15 Sep 1810 in NC; d 30 Jul 1880 in Jamestown, Ark, buried in the old Jamestown cemetery near his wife, the rock marker is now missing from his grave. A sketch of this family now in possession of a Mr. R. E . Moore of Pine Bluff, Ark, says he was born at Shiloh Ford of the Atkins, NC. I believe we will find that he was born in Duplin Co, NC. He is the son of James & Sarah (Willis) Rutledge. James d 7 Dec 1848 and Sarah rutledge d 14 Feb 1846, these dates and names are the earliest records in the Gilbert Calloway Rutledge Bible, now owned by Mr Vernon Varnell of Batesville, Ark. The sketch listed her as Sarah Willis and listed James' father as Edward Rutledge. There were errors in the sketch, some had been corrected by Gilbert Calloway Rutledge.

I have records that trace Edward Rutledge and his wife, Sarah (Armstrong) Rutledge from a will filed in Augusta Co, VA, on back to Ireland, however, we do not have proof at this time, due to lack of birth date and place for our James Rutledge, father of the above John Rutledge. These records were donated by Mr J Frank Berry of Lewis, Iowa, who does belong to the family of the well known Ann Rutledge that supposedly was engaged to Abraham Lincoln.

John Rutledge married 20 Jan 1835, Miss Rebecca Parsons, born 11 May 1814-1815 Tenn; died 5 Aug 1860 Jamestown, AR., buried in the old Jamestown Cemetery, has a stone headstone on her grave. She was the daughter of Mr Thomas Parsons and Mrs Susan (Madice) Parsons. The Bible gives the year of her birth as 1814 and her headstone has 1815.

We find John & Rebecca living in the section of Alabama that became Cherokee Co in 1836, they were there in 1835 before it was named. The 1850 Census shows John & Rebecca and five of their children, one child had died and was not listed. His name was spelled Rulage instead of our way of spelling Rutledge on that census record. Mr Legrand Dean was also listed as a helper on John's farm.

The courthouse in Cherokee Co, Alabama, burned in 1882, however, I did obtain the Census Record from Mrs. Robert Neville Mann in Cedar Bluff, Alabama, a genealogist.

John & Rebecca owned a large farm and the children helped with the farm work. When the oldest son was 17 years old, this whole family left Cherokee Co and came to Arkansas, settling around Alderbrook which was later names Jamestown, Ar. Some of the descendents still recall the stories their parents passed down to them about John owning slaves on his farm or plantation in Alabama and that he would sell his 14 & 15 year old slave boys. They left Alabama and arrived in Arkansas in 1852.

A John Rutledge served in the civil War under Capt Samuel R Fetzer and was on the muster roll of the members of this company when they were surrendered on 11 May 1865 and listed him as living in Galloway, Arkansas. References to the Independent Co Chronicle, Vol VI # 2, page 34 & 43.

Ten children were born of this marriage, as follows:

1.. Gilbert Calloway Loranzo Huston Rutledge

  2.. Sarah Jane Rutledge

  3.. Francis Marion Rutledge

  4.. Letha Emily Rutledge

  5.. Columbus Knox Polk Rutledge

  6.. Amanda L Rutledge

  7.. Jane Rutledge

  8.. William H Rutledge

  9.. John Gard Rutledge

  10.. Daniel C Rutledge

Notes for George RUTLEDGE-4835

Hi Edna  and those of you who are researching MARY POLLY MASSEY
RATLEDGE:

Mary's dad STEPHEN MASSEY was born on the Isle of Nantucket in the year
1761.  He and his family were Quakers.  When Stephen was ten years old
his family moved to Gilford County, North Carolina.  He married when he
was 20 years old.  His father was also named Stephen and his mother was
MERCY ALLEN.

At the time people didn't like the Quakers very much so they moved on
into Greene County, Tennessee.

From the yearly tax book of Greene County (1804 through 1866) the
Masseys and the RUTLEDGES lived in the tax district Number 5.

From the 1840 list:
Henry Massey;  Stephen Massey;  Thomas Rutledge;  Benjamin Rutledge;
Asberry Rutledge.

From the 1841 list:
Benjamin Rutledge;  Stephen Massey;  Thomas Rutledge - (district 8)

From the 1842 list:
William Massey;  Henry Massey;  Stephen Massey;  Benjamin Rutledge

From the 1843 list:
William Massey;  Henry Massey;  John Massey;  Stephen Massey;  Benjamin
Rutledge;  Asberry Rutledge

From the 1844 list:
Benjamin Rutledge

From the 1845 and the 1846 lists:
No Rutledges
No Masseys

From the 1847 list:
William Massey;  John Massey;  Stephen Massey (had 120 acres)
No Rutledges

These are on the LDS film #94445.  Notice the spelling RUTLEDGE, not
RATLEDGE.   At the bottom I have written  "Solomon Massey, son of
Stephen is buried in the Armstrong Cemetery near Madisonville,
Tennessee.

It seems that Stephen Massey moved to Madison County, Tennessee, the
same year the Ratledge's moved to Tillico Plains, Tennessee.  The
Ratledge's stayed but the Massey's seem to have gone back to Greene
County, Tennessee.

If we can find the name of Mary Polly Massey Ratledge's mother, I have
the Massey's info back to the late 1600's.  My records are from "The
History of Nantucket" Volume II by Alexander Starbuck, and also from
"Massey Families in America" by Judge Frank A. Massey, Judge of the
Circuit Court, Fort Worth, Texas 76102, and many more reliable sources.

Edna, I also have the court records of your ancestor (Catherine Ratledge
Moses) receiving land from Mary and Benjamin Ratledge, and will be happy
to send that to you if you email me your snail mail address.

I am sending this to the list in hopes that there might be someone else
out there who is also researching these names.

Thank you for your time.

John

Kathye, Darryl and all,

This is a test. I am sending a general report form family tree maker to see
if it will be allowed on the list.   I have done this a lot on private mail,
but don't remember sending one to the list.  If it will come through the
list it will be the easiest way for persons using FTM to send their data to
the list, as long as they don't send 10 generations at a time.   Here goes!

Jean....

Re: the guardianship of David Caldwell for William and James Rutledge....
I've looked long and hard in N.C. county files for add'l info re: the
accountings to the Court that David Caldwell surely made...but to date, no
success...

Question re: guardianship.... I know it was extremetly rare that women were
granted any standing in Court during this time period, with the exception
they could have standing to protect their dowry rights, either thru
disposition of personal property, or land.  However, during the search for
info on the Caldwell guardianship, I came upon the appointment in 1806 of Ann
Rutledge, daughter of John Rutledge, Jr of Rowan Co.N.C as guardian for two
siblings...a brother Abel and a sister, Prudence.

Did the guardianship rules differ for women based on gender, or were only
mothers never allowed to be appointed to the position.  Or do you know if the
legal convention change between 1775 when Caldwell was appointed and 1806
when Ann was appointed.

I'm looking for information on William Rutledge Sr., who married Matilda King (daughter of Peter King). William and Matilda may have been of Stokes County, NC in mid 1700s. They had the following children: Elijah (born abt. 1773?), William Jr., Johnson (known as John), Joel, Peter, James, Isabella, and 2 other daughters - names unknown). Elijah married Isabella(or Isabelle) Boles. Any assistance is appreciated! Thanks. Robynn Rutledge ==== RUTLEDGE Mailing List ==== Check out the Rutledge Family Association page.... https://sites.rootsweb.com/~rutledge/

Edna, Here's the info I have on James Rutledge....I trace my family back to his brother Elijah, so I haven't focused too much on James. William Rutledge Sr. is the earliest ancestor of Rutledges in both Stokes and Forsyth Counties in North Carolina (the two counties used to be one - Stokes). He married Matilda King. William first received a land grant in 1784 (from the state of NC) for 250 acres in what is now Stokes County, NC. Because the grant included improvements to the land, it is assumed that he was on the property for some time before receiving the grant. William and Matilda had 9 children: 1- William Jr. 2- Johnson (John) 3- Joel 4- Peter 5- Elijah (married Isabella/Isabelle Boles also of Stokes County, daughter of Alexander Boles, Sr. on 12-14-1802; died sometime after 1850 - probably last time recorded in census; Elijah's children were: Burgess (m: Polly Tanner); Johnson (m: Dorsey Gibson); Alexander B. (m: Mary Tilley); James (m: Susannah Zeiglar); Benjamin (m: Judith Gibson) and William and D. Irvin who never married - both died in the Civil War. Isabelle/Isabella died in 1864 6- James 7- Isabella (married Alexander Boles, Jr. - - brother of Elijah's wife Isabella/Isabelle Boles) 8 & 9 - two daughters, names unknown Johnson and Elijah are the oldest sons and William's land was distributed between the two abt. 1803. Stokes County Annual Tax listings show William Sr. had 9 slaves All sons but for William Jr. and Elijah died or left Stokes County between 1803 and 1810 (I assume they were no longer recorded in annual tax listings or census) Giles County, Tennessee (now Pulaski) records William Jr., Johnson and James appearing as newcomers in the county in 1806. In 1810, records in Giles County indicate Peter was also there - he was arrested for failure to pay debts. I can't go back farther than William Rutledge, Sr. or Peter King, Matilda's father. Hope this helps someone.... Robynn Rutledge

I found this in my "archives" from my prodegy days in the early 90s (19 that is). This was from Jerry Hodge on one of the prodigy boards, Subject: NC - Surry Co. "4 Apr 1786. William Rutledge is bound to James, John, Isaac and Joel Rutledge, minor sons of Wm. Rutledge decd for 500 (pounds) for 500 A on N side of Deep River as shown in deed from Henry Spangler to Wm. Rutledge decd and 312 A (part of 340A) where Mary Rutledge lives, at her death to be divided among said minor children." He goes on to explain that the above was not a will but that William was apparently buying land from the minor brothers left to them by Wm. Sr. and he further cites a 1782 Tax Roll that shows Mary Rutledge with 500 A and reasons that Wm. must have died before then. He also stated that the Steelmans, Rutledge and Creason families were all intermarried. The post was signed "Jerry in MD"

The following is part of an early 90s post to prodigy by Rachel. "Now there is a George Rutledge, (I believe the one that was in Augusta Co, VA & 'removed' to Carolina abt 1745) who died abt 1770 (will dated 21 Mar 1770 in Tyron Co., NC., wife Jean - - leaves to son James tract of land called the Nickson Ieve containing 150 a; son John the place on Douchman's Creek containing 200 below Andrew Hampton's; son George place on Turkey Creek Cont 255 ac; son Charles, the place I now live on reserving same to wife for her life. dau Mary, mare and 20 pounds in money; dau Jean 25 lbs also tract of land on Broad River I got from James Ceisot. Now George Rutledge purchased land from John Armstrong of Anson Co., in 1755--"VA money - - land on N side of Broad River, on main fork of Turkey Creek, 225 a, granted to sd Armstrong Aug 1753." Armstrong is reported to be relative of Geo. Now look at your William Rutledge b. abt 1730-45. He is in Stokes Co." signed "Rachel" NOTE: Rachel has a tie-in to this "William Rutledge" in a subsequant post if any one is interested in seeing it. ** Question - Does anyone have anything on the "Mary" who. as daughter of George Rutledge, received the mare and 20 pounds in his will? This is the proper time in the proper location and Mary assumedly of a young age, for her to have been the Mary Rutledge who married Thomas P. Sanford abt 1780. JerrySanford

Hi list
I've been working on the James Ratledge, Sr. family who moved from Murderkill Hundred, Kent Co., DE to Rowan Co., NC in 1785. I've been gathering and sorting and have completed a special project on the land of James Ratledge Sr. of Rowan Co.,NC - where it came from and where it went - first in Kent Co., DE and then in Rowan Co., NC. I am always glad to share this research if anyone is interested.

The spelling for this particular line has been Ratledge back to early 1700's in Kent Co., DE. Court and land documents for this family show both Ra and Ru in the same paragraph though.

I have stuck with the Ratledge spelling for this line to separate it from the many other Rutledge lines, but agree it was probably Rutledge/ Routledge originally.

First of all. . . . Hey, Edna - this might be your ancestor! He was charged with horse stealing!! But he didn't change his name, just moved to a different county.

Sandra Ratledge of Cleveland, TN is descended from this line ([email protected]) - you should contact her for more. Greene Co., TN Circuit Court Min-Civil (LDS film #0944373) pg. 22 - 11 Oct 1840 - Greene Co.,TN vs Asberry Ratledge he was charged and fined for horse stealing

Don its Wm. D. The other day I ask about the brickwall, What i was looking for was how to view it to see the new page on wills.

Stokes C0. N.C. Marriage Bonds page 260. Has a Benjamin Rutledge marring a Mary Timmins 12/July 1797.
Is this the same Benjamin in Williams Will? On the mater of James Rutledge from N.C. b. 1790 How would like a d. date on him not just the year?----- Its in James B. Rutledges Bible. And I have had the photo copy of the Bible for YEARS and never saw it.
There are so meny James Rutledges it just went by me. Some one had tryed to scrach James Rutledge and his death dates from the Bible ( why) had somthing happend between 1850 and 1852 when he died??????? The date is Oct 7 1852.

I also found another missing date. The 2ed son of George W Rutledge and Rose Boyer. George W. Rutledge( jr? ) b.12/22/1856 ( d.Dec 22 1860) 4 years old.

Guess we might as well as this to the pot even tho I haven't seen much on the GA Rutledges. They had to have come of of VA and the Carolinas tho I haven't been able to do anything with the line. They are pretty far down on my ancestry line but would be nice to take them back another generation or two and find some descendants.

If you check the Rutledge page that has one of my working files on the Rutledge Families I think you will find what you are looking for. Also John D. Rutledge has a lot on those lines. Rachel Demaree Clemons ----- Hello, Rachel,

Info I have suggests otherwise. The Bible of Mrs. Nellie Rutledge Davis of Crawfordsville IN says:

George Rutledge, b. in Scotland was a Presbyterian, a dissenter from the Episcopal Church. He went from Scotland to Ireland and there married Nelly Gamble. Their oldest son, William was born in Ireland in 1728. William m. Elinor Caldwell. They emigrated from Ireland to Augusta Co. (now Wythe Co.) VA ...

I don't recall whether it states where George was born, but there is a section on the family in "Notable Southern Families", vol. 5, pp. 26-31, Crockett family.

Best wishes,

Hi Edna and those of you who are researching MARY POLLY MASSEY RATLEDGE: Mary's dad STEPHEN MASSEY was born on the Isle of Nantucket in the year 1761. He and his family were Quakers. When Stephen was ten years old his family moved to Gilford County, North Carolina. He married when he was 20 years old. His father was also named Stephen and his mother was MERCY ALLEN. At the time people didn't like the Quakers very much so they moved on into Greene County, Tennessee.

From the yearly tax book of Greene County (1804 through 1866) the Masseys and the RUTLEDGES lived in the tax district Number 5.

From the 1840 list: Henry Massey; Stephen Massey; Thomas Rutledge; Benjamin Rutledge; Asberry Rutledge.

From the 1841 list: Benjamin Rutledge; Stephen Massey; Thomas Rutledge - (district 8)

From the 1842 list: William Massey; Henry Massey; Stephen Massey; Benjamin Rutledge

From the 1843 list: William Massey; Henry Massey; John Massey; Stephen Massey; Benjamin Rutledge; Asberry Rutledge From the 1844 list: Benjamin Rutledge

From the 1845 and the 1846 lists: No Rutledges No Masseys

From the 1847 list: William Massey; John Massey; Stephen Massey (had 120 acres) No Rutledges These are on the LDS film #94445. Notice the spelling RUTLEDGE, not RATLEDGE. At the bottom I have written "Solomon Massey, son of Stephen is buried in the Armstrong Cemetery near Madisonville, Tennessee. It seems that Stephen Massey moved to Madison County, Tennessee, the same year the Ratledge's moved to Tillico Plains, Tennessee. The Ratledge's stayed but the Massey's seem to have gone back to Greene County, Tennessee.

If we can find the name of Mary Polly Massey Ratledge's mother, I have the Massey's info back to the late 1600's. My records are from "The History of Nantucket" Volume II by Alexander Starbuck, and also from "Massey Families in America" by Judge Frank A. Massey, Judge of the Circuit Court, Fort Worth, Texas 76102, and many more reliable sources.

Edna, I also have the court records of your ancestor (Catherine Ratledge Moses) receiving land from Mary and Benjamin Ratledge, and will be happy to send that to you if you email me your snail mail address. I am sending this to the list in hopes that there might be someone else out there who is also researching these names. Thank you for your time. John [email protected]
